NBC: Stephen Jones denies that Dez Bryant threatened to miss time **merged**

This thread should probably be renamed to "11th hour Dez contract negotiation posturing" or something lol.

Bryant has little to no leverage. I mean, yes, he has some leverage in the belief that Dallas wants to win and they need him but it's not enough IMO for Dallas to just cave into him.

Bryant wants money and if he sits out, he basically gives up $13MM this year. And mostly likely, he'll get tagged again as Dallas will believe his stunt showed how immature he was so why would they give him a long term deal then? Further, what team is going to try to sign him out from under the Cowboys and give up multiple picks?

Bryant is in a corner here and the Cowboys know it. Bryant reaching out and telling Cowboys fans he's going to sit out smells an awful lot like desperation. Like, hey look guys, I am REALLY SERIOUS here.

Agreed. Let him sit, do not cave.

We'll soon see if the Cowboys are setting Dez up as an example of their newly established contract policy.
Right now, they seem quite set on doing just that. As far as the precedent is concerned, it would surely appear to the players that if they're willing to stand pat with Dez, then they'd likely do the same with any of the others. Just conjecture at this point but the next two days might very well indicate the longterm intentions of the FO.

I agree, and I can't help but note that his own tweet is a little vague. He says "I will not be there if there is no deal."

What does that even mean? He won't be at training camp? He won't be here all season? It's just a desperate negotiating tactic from a guy with no leverage.

Here's another thought, and I haven't read the whole thread so someone may have already said this, but if Dez does sit out for a long while I'll be watching what happens to his personal life off the field. Football is all this kid has it seems. Without it he is a catastrophe waiting to happen. His "handlers" better wake up to this reality. The Cowboys have babysat him since day one so they know this and it's a big reason why they are being careful about any long term deal.

Well, if somebody pony's up two 1st round picks, then so be it.

The last time I witnessed this franchise/fanbase this drunk off success was after the 13 - 3 season. We invited the Hard Knock cameras in to witness our march towards the Super Bowl. I think we started that year out 1 - 7 with David Garrard or Vince Young....probably both....run up 30 point halftime leads against us in Dallas. Memo to Dallas fan base: Just because we went 12 - 4 last year does not mean we will pick up where we left off. One of the biggest reasons we were successful last year was because of the PLAYERS on the field. Mainly...are BEST players. We have already dismissed the RB position (not saying I have a problem with letting Murray walk). But now we are ok with letting Dez walk if it nets us 2 first round picks! We are NOT in rebuilding mode. The time is NOW! Romo does not have time to wait on 2 first round picks. His back has already paid the price and lived through our rebuilding stage. The rebuild is complete. It is time to GO for it!

He does not HAVE to play...what part about that do you not understand? Did Joey Galloway suit up for Seattle when faced with a similar situation?

Galloway could still negotiate. Dez can't after Wednesday. There would be literally no purpose to holding out other than to cost himself money because Jerry won't be allowed to sign him until after the season anyway.

Pay then man he's earned it

Hey Dude! they want to pay him and have guaranteed him 12.8M upfront to sign. That's
lots of Quan in my bank account... He needs to take it or leave it cause the train is
leaving the station!

He's not walking anywhere. Either he plays with us for the next 2 years, or he doesn't play at all. I don't think anyone is offering 2 first round picks for him right now. I can't see him getting any huge contract for himself after sitting out for 2 years, so I doubt he goes through with this.

That's one of the things I love about this deadline. No more b.s. negotiating through the media (and social media) after Wednesday. At that point, you either play or don't.

It's not an OK, Not OK thing. It's how the system works. If somebody wants to sign Dez, it will cost 2 1st round picks. It is what it is.

Actually we started 3-0 (and 4-1) and were #1 in many power rankings. Then we had a debacle in Arizona and Romo got hurt, and we laid two eggs to end the season and miss the playoffs.

You are correct sir. The season I am talking about followed the season we had our first playoff win in 15+ years

Correct. Our first year with Dez. The 2009 season with the playoff win was one which had many people worried about our WR ability because we had cut TO.

Dez has no leverage. Even if he did sit out it wouldn't change anything as far as contract this year. Either it gets done by the deadline or it doesn't, his threat won't effect that.
