The point is resigning LVE is that 1. you don't have to spend bigger money on a FA to replace him or 2. spend a draft pick on replacing him.

There are more important positions the Cowboys need to spend their FA money and draft picks on.

So yes he is replaceable, but it's smarter to re-sign him.
Not if it costs big money to do it. Money is important here because LVE is closer to a jag than he is a star. He had a solid season but if the contract becomes too crazy and if he walks? Wouldn’t hurt the Cowboys chances at making the playoffs.

Individual success on this Cowboys defense is so interconnected, How successful would Wilson be if there were no Micah Parsons? He made many Cowboys defenders look good by absorbing the attention he got from opponent OC's.

Still, Wilson deserves individual credit for the way he brings violence when it's time to tackle. The Cowboys are often criticized for not being physical enough and Wilson was the perfect counter example to that debate. It really would be unfortunate to lose him.

I'm not comforted with this talk about depth at the safety position. Yes, the Cowboys have others capable of coming in and starting for the Cowboys but at a similar level?

Last season Wilson led all Cowboys in solo tackles and combined tackles.

Comparison to all NFL safeties last season:

2nd in solo tackles

3rd in combined tackles

1st in sacks

2nd in tackles for a loss

However, the Cowboys have another safety capable of comparable numbers? Kearse is the other starter. I like Mukuamu and perhaps Coyle makes a jump but a top three in four defensive categories in the entire NFL?

This is where I would use the franchise tag. Just because some offensive players are overpaid, that shouldn't halt the Cowboys from developing a potentially dominating defense.

Wagner or LVE/Wilson? I would go with Wagner.
that the choice cant have Wagner and LVE makes no sense. their camps are asking close to the same $$ I'm sure and we have a overflow at safety, so Wagner makes sense. he a piece similar to a late adding in Haley for quick rental in an obvious position of need and he could be big influence on 33s development...

I also think Clark’s natural talents are more like Wagner then LVE. Wagner would be a great mentor for the kid.

Yeah I’ve seen this fan base overrate Gregory, Hitchens, Byron, Wilson just to name a few. Life goes on when these guys leave. Now Parsons? Feel free to cry lol.
I’m pretty sure Hitchens went on to be a starting linebacker with the Chiefs and now has 2 Rings ?

Letting a rising player like Wilson walk and keeping a player on the decline like Zeke is the reason this will always be a almost there team. Typical.

I hope Wilson leaves and stays in the division. They deserve it.

Glad we're letting Wilson go and bringing back the guy who gets hurt every game.

Dude was an enforcer this year.

Wilson is a big loss imo.
He’s an “in the box” safety… nothing more. Kearse, Mukuamo, who came on at the end of the season and has better coverage skills, and Bell, 6’2” and faster, all play the same position. No need to overpay or make this some type of priority. Time to walk!

Both guys want to test FA. I think at least one will re-sign. Probably LVE. I see DW getting a big offer elsewhere.
DW may get a big offer , but he may not that effective without the combo of Kearse and Hooker, the safety tandem in Quinn’s scheme is a big improvement from the last few years.

He struggles in coverage at times. I like the player a lot but he’s more of a Roy Williams safety and those guys flame out early.

Yeah but Nickel packages with him playing linebacker was huge.

Donovan Wilson was an absolute enforcer on defense. Even if it was a lot of box play.

His loss will be huge

Nonsense! Kearse, Mukuamo and Bell can perform those functions and in the case of Kearse and Mukuamo at least, provide better coverage ability. Cox can also take some of those snaps. The only loss here is to fan’s emotions!

Wilson is good in run defense. But as long as they don't replace him with another Xavier Woods or Kazee they should be alright.

LVE was playing great at the end of last season. I guess they can go with Clark and Cox but they will need to draft some depth. I think one of the young LBs is going to emerge in 2023.

But anyone who thought this offseason would be different and that Jerry would keep the team together was dreaming. In Jerry world, players get paid by other teams not the Cowboys.
