RELEASED Nolan Carroll Released

There goes the famous Stash strawman he pulls out anytime he is losing. You said mayowa is a miss. I said he was signed and led the team in sacks. Now show me anywhere in that statement where I am tooting his horn or mine? You can't cause I didn't. I simply stated you can't call that a miss especially at the price we got him at. Feel free to create another strawman though.

He's a miss in the context that he was the only DE signed by the front office when they said they needed DE help and all he's been over his entire career here is an average DE who got benched for being dumb at times.

So yeah, in the context of how the front office approaches FA and in the context of how much real help they have gotten in FA shopping the bargain bin, yeah, he's not exactly been the "hit" they are looking for.

I have no problems with criticizing bad moves made by the franchise. I've done it on numerous occasions and will continue to do so. Just like I criticized our unwillingness to sign a veteran MIKE that can start right away so we don't have to rely on Hitchens and Jaylon to play the spot.

The problem is, as another poster described, is people like yourself keep thinking about how badly Dez owned him a couple of years ago and keep that out of your head.

Carroll played well against the Giants, then got injured against the Broncos and hasn't played since. He isn't a costly cut, and Lewis has shown he's ready to start in this league and Awuzie shows promise as well. He's been out for over 3 weeks with a concussion and will turn 31 years old, soon. No sense in keeping him.

And Carroll isn't an issue with the defense's woes. Blame that on Crawford, M. Collins (who everybody lauded 2 weeks ago when I wasn't), Jaylon and Heath.

Actually I've never said anything about Carroll versus Dez. In fact, when people were ranting about it when we signed him, I pointed out it was actually Bradley Fletcher who got owned him more than Carroll. So you can stop with that silly accusation.

Nevertheless, he was a crap CB and we tried to sign him not once, but twice. He was a cast off from a team that, at that time, was even more desperate for CB help than we were. We at least had Brown coming off a solid rookie year and Scandrick coming back. The Eagles had Jalen Mills who stunk last year and Ron Brooks, who was always hurt. And they wanted no part of Carroll, even as desperate as their CB situation was.

Carroll was a poor signing. It just was.

I live in philly and he was HORRIBLE HERE!!!! I dont know why anyone expected anything different!!!!

No. Some of you may want them to go on a FA spending spree, but I'd rather be able to afford to keep guys like Martin, Irving and soon Dak/Zeke

Even if I bought your argument against a FA spending spree, you still assign no blame or criticism for the FO signing a veteran FA for $4 million this year that will also count $2M against next year's cap who only lasted 5 weeks into his first season ?

Everyone saw this one coming the moment he was signed. Gotta blame the GM and coaches that signed off on this. Mean while Claiborne looking like a pro-bowler and Carr intercepting passes.

Claiborne was pro-bowl material last year for 7 games, but he absolutely stunk for the other 9. His problem always was health.

Carr was simply misused here. He plays better when he can be aggressive, so Balt is a much better spot for him. Our defensive scheme was never going to let him showcase the very reasons we paid him. Unbelievably reliable, great teammate, stand up guy off the field, but just not a superior talent, and we all know Rod's scheme requires superior talent everywhere.

Once again there is a huge gap between "FA spending spree" and making quality additions.

Free agency is not go cheap or overspend. There is an in-between.

And plenty of people on here have shown how it is very possible to retain all those players and still get some middle/upper-middle free agents. Don't let the cap excuse fool you. The cap can be managed without killing your team.

No one is saying let's go all Giants on the defense, but a nice piece here and there is only prudent.

I think at the end of the day, the secondary has a chance. Lewis looks to be keeper. Oscan and Brown have struggled at times, but I've seen worse. There is hope, that either the coaches will wake up and insert Woods for Heath full time, or Awuzie (if healthy) will also provide some help at safety. Not great, but you can at least expect improvement.

The Linebackers though, I have no idea. Outside of a 31 year old injury prone Sean Lee, they have a 1 legged guy playing MLB and a few barely serviceable guys in Wilson and Hitchens. Wilber and Durant as depth. My goodness.

No.

You forfeit the right to be surprised or disappointed when you're shopping off of the clearance rack.

But they have to start questioning how they're doing things there.

I agree with this. Carroll was signed to be a player equivalent to what we had in Carr, which means we were never going to be totally satisfied with his play. You could say pretty much the same for all of our free agent signings. They are just stopgap players, not ones who are going to elevate the play of our team. I may be forgetting someone, but the only difference-maker we've signed the past few years has been Hardy, and he was damaged goods that became a cancer when the team wasn't doing well.

This free-agent strategy is fine if you have younger, better players who can step up fairly quickly like Lewis is doing. Otherwise, which has been our case, you just end up with several so-so veterans on the field filling in spots and not making our team better.

Carroll was just insurance for Chito, Lewis, Brown....3m is less than Ks ........ and now he isn't healthy......... easy call but not some validation of eveyone's conspiracy theory

Lee, Wilson, and Hitchens can start esp Lee. Wilber is depth even if you argue marginal. Durant is on his last legs no pun intended. Smith is an unknown due to injury. We do need to add at least one preferably two starters at LB but we aren't in dire straits. If you add the back 7 as marginal then you have the majority of the problem. The mass of quality if just not there. Our front four isn't stalwart either but it is at least adequate.

That is the problem not just with the D but the club right now. It's the quality of the players much more than the perceived problem with coaching. Not saying coaching doesn't have its moments but that's not the failure of the club. It's the defensive players. And that was expected coming into the season.

What conspiracy theory?

They went cheap at CB and found likely one of worst CBs they could find in that price range. They had a weird obsession with a mediocre to bad CB because they tried to sign him in 2015 as well.

It's usually the simplest answer. They thought they were smart bringing in Carroll on the cheap and thinking he could play. He couldn't. They figured might as well admit their mistake and cut their losses now.
