Then why not just cut him? A player can't place themselves on the reserve-retired list. The team does that.

Speculation, he probably said if he was getting cut he'd retire, knowing full way no one else was going to sign him.

That's what makes this so odd. Why are they sticking with this guy if he screwed up again?

Reserve/Retired List – If a player retires prior to the expiration of his contract, the team can place him on the Reserve/Retired List and retain its rights to the player under the player’s contract. The contract is tolled, so if, for example, a player retires with 2 years remaining on his contract, and is placed on the Reserve/Retired List, then, if he chooses to “unretire”, the player’s rights are still held by the team to the extent of the remaining 2 years of the contract.

How many DT's do most teams carry? Without Brent, we still have five on the roster as I recall. It wasn't an urgent need before the draft. I don't think losing someone who wasn't being counted on at all, changes that.

let me correct myself, quality DT is still a need with or without Brent......

It's not the quantity it's the quality.

The only guy to put up decent numbers last season over a large number of snaps was Crawford. And he only had 3 sacks. Everyone else is either:

-Unproven
-Only played a small amount of snaps due to injuries
-Sucked

They also had no one on the edges really to keep offensive linemen honest. Just having Hardy, the hopeful progression of Lawrence and the athleticism of Gregory will make them all look much better. Schematically it will also allow them to do different things such as more stunts and reverses.

I get why some of you are worried, but I'm not.

1Techs aren't going to put up big sack numbers. Cowboys would probably like a guy like Brandon Mebane. McClain could be that guy if he can stay healty. Maybe even Ken Bishop.

Maybe a cut was looming and this was a way of saving face.

Either way, here's hoping that we see some guys develop for what's obviously not a position of strength on the team.

Ken Bishop got the start in a playoff game in Lambeau. He did alright. Between him and Hayden they'll be ok. 1 tech just not a big deal to Marinelli.

Josh Brent hardly contributed last year anyway.

Yes, I get that, but if the guy is screwing up why worry with keeping him? It makes me wonder if this isn't something like a failed UA or drinking.

Knowing this before the draft would have been nice.
