The question was “will they or won’t they”, not “should they or shouldn’t they”.

I hope they don’t but I can’t bring myself to believe this wasn’t just the normal media posturing.
No idea.

'Gob-Smacked!' Bombshell Cowboys Rumor: No Dak Contract? - NFL Network
NFL Network host Rich Eisen says multiple people at the Scouting Combine believe Jerry Jones' version of "All In" for the 2024 Dallas Cowboys includes no new contract for quarterback Dak Prescott.
Much of the offseason has been dominated by everyone trying to decipher exactly what Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones meant by being "all in."

Is it to go out and acquire big-name free agents and kick the salary cap can down the road to 2027? Or is it to sign up the star players who require a new contract like Dak Prescott?

As it turns out, it might be neither.

NFL Network's Rich Eisen was at the Scouting Combine all week, had his ear to the ground and upon his return, had quite the rumor list at his disposal. Now, Eisen is a well-respected personality in the industry and has been for decades so we don't take this with a grain of salt.

Eisen has revealed some of the chatter heard at Indianapolis during the Scouting Combine and it has something to do with Prescott's contract situation and Cowboys Nation, you're going to want to sit down for this.

“The rumor I heard from multiple people at the combine is his [Jerry Jones'] definition of all in is to make Dak play out his walk year and not extend him at all and just eat the cap hit," Eisen said on The Rich Eisen Show.

“This is what he means by all in. He means hey Dak you haven't won a playoff game except you know a couple around here, last year was so dreadful I'm going to make you play it out and I'll eat the 59 nearly 60 million bucks. If you do what I hope you do [win a Super Bowl], hold me over a barrel because you think he's going to take less than 59 million bucks to stay put? I was just gob-smacked when I heard that.”

not sure if I can post the SI article, but a tid bit is above.

All-in baby
That was an interesting story, and I hope it's true. (although I expect a new deal at some point)

I do believe JJ & Co. have quietly come to realize Dak's limitations. They saw what Dak did in the playoff loss. That was literally an historic loss, and it eats at JJ.

How much damage does it do to the roster if Dallas decides to eat the $60M? The thought of tens of millions in dead money years in the future is sad if they go the route of voidable years to spread the hit.

Yep

Some fans just can’t get past the lack of success in the playoffs.

But as you pointed out correctly it’s more common most don’t want to realize that top 10 caliber paid QB’s don’t all win championships for whatever reasons.

You just don’t move on for the unknown when you’re a consistent playoff caliber team.
"Playoff caliber team"? Yer kidding right? Our playoff record says otherwise. Ya, sure...2022 bucs made the playoffs....as losers!
Most dont expect ships each and every year. Competing proudly even in defeat goes a long way. a couple nfc appearances would help.
Just like everyone else, dak has earned the criticism. As the "leader" he should expect the brunt of it.

Yep. Just like we could have extended him for a lot less if we didn’t wait the extra year lol
I think the issue has to do with alternatives. If they had a back up QB that won enough games and got them to the playoffs the year Dak got hurt, I highly doubt Dak would be on the team and if so he wouldn’t have the same contract he has now.

But the reality is, when he got hurt they looked horrible and ran through 3 QBs who were bad. At that point they didn’t have much leverage. Daks potential contract grew with every loss they accumulated with those other bum QBs they ran out there.

If they are not going to resign him and let him play it out, they need to have a plan in place if Dak doesn’t play well or gets hurt. That plan is a 1st or 2nd round pick. But that won’t happen.

No doubt he deserves the criticism for his poor performance in playoffs .And the accolades for his work reaching the playoffs.

Calling everyone a loser who doesn’t win playoff games and a championship is just talking points.

And playoff caliber means making playoffs consistently.

Sometimes there is upsets and often there are better teams and QB’s in the way.

Yep, that’s basically how Romo was let go.

And as sad as it is, that was the correct move. 2016 Romo was a better QB than 2016 Dak. But the truth is, he wasn’t going to stay healthy. It would be awesome to see Romo hand the ball off 25-30 times and then shred defenses when they loaded the box. It would be 2014 Romo but with a better RB and slightly better defense.

They got fortunate Dak played so well in 2016 and had the team rolling by not making mistakes. He was no where near the QB he is today. They need to take a chance and draft a QB high (1st or 2nd rd). That will not be a wasted pick because they will show they are investing in the position. Even if they pay after the year they will still have a back up and a possible way out if they don’t want Dak in the middle of his new contract

guys don't forget how Dak got his job...pre-season lights out performance

we can't act like Dak is healthy either, he has missed games...if lance shines in the pre-season there is a possibility if Dak gets injured this time around he will not get his job back just like Tony Romo

his invincibility is catching up to him...slow as molasses bc of the ankle dual surgery, finger issue, and calf issue...it was a miracle he was healthy all of last off-season. Now think about Dak without Tyron Smith and how much he cannot handle pressure without an All-Pro LT...the jones see the writing is on the wall and they are cheap you think they want to pay someone 60M who is not worth it? They will play this out just like they did the the FTag

Cowboys aren’t smart. So I’ll say no. They are going to let him play this year and then re-sign him next year for money. Just how they run things. Very foolish.
However, that does not help us this year. So we will be going backwards, just to resign Dak next year.

That does sound like a GM Jeruh decision.

Im not sure I’d compare Daks current health status and concerns to that of Romo in 2016.

From memory the team had a better win/loss % with a washed Andy Dalton than Prescott with completed starts during that season and Dalton played with an even weaker offensive line. The team has since gone 5-1 with a very average practice squad QB in Cooper Rush.

So the action facts would suggest the complete opposite, i.e., Prescott isn't a difference maker but a progress stopper.

Dak did not win the starting job after pre-season. He won it due to injury.
