For all those getting their panties wadded up (in a good way or bad) over Elliot, understand this. The press conference trio walked out, sat down, and then Jerry asked if anyone had any introductory comments. Nobody did so they went right into questions. The reporters asked about Elliot so that's why the topic came up. They could have asked about Shawn Oakman (and knowing Jerry he would have had nothing bad to say) and everyone would suddenly be saying that he was going to be a day 2 pick by the Cowboys. The same thing with Ramsay - they were asked a few questions about him. If the reporters asked about Treadwell or any of the other WRs we'd all be hearing about how they were now going to be in consideration at 4.
These press conferences are about as meaningless as it comes. They must be NFL mandated hence the need to trot out the Jones show.
The one thing I do get out of it is how aimless Jerry seems to be. He went on a missive about big contracts to established stars and unproven rookies and seemed to contradict himself a few times. He also took what seemed like minutes to spit out a sentence. A true transcript of his talk, including the non-vocabulary noises, would be a treat to try to decode. Public Speaking 101 instructors have to be weeping when they watch that nonsense.
Jason is a master at saying virtually nothing at a press conference. He might as well have pre-packaged cue cards or just hold up a shaken Magic 8 Ball ("All Signs Point To Yes!") whenever asked something.
One of the most lucid things I have read on this site recently was the comment about what Elliot would make in his rookie deal compared to all RB deals around the NFL. The poster then compared that to the same draft slot with Tunsil compared to other NFL Tackle contracts. That's the sort of sound thinking that people should consider. If Dallas drafts a RB with the 4th pick they have to expect that he will be the best at his position sight unseen. You can't pick a guy like Ki-Jana Carter or Ronnie Brown in this day and age and miss since you'll be paying uber-premium RB money. I would be stunned if the Dallas "braintrust" (being generous here) thinks that makes good team salary structure sense.
As for Jerry saying that they planned on staying at 4, what should he say? That they are dying to trade down? Of course they will listen to offers. Considering they need several players on D, I think that makes the most sense. Get a pass rusher that would be a reach at 4, pick up extra picks, and try to fill as many holes as possible. Stevie's comments about how they used free agency to fill holes so that they could select any position sounded like rhetoric. A solid follow up question would have been, "Who did you really pick up in free agency?" Since it was a draft press conference, they just moved on.
