Dustin Vaughn

I hope so. We will see in preseason if he has developed. As a prospect QB, I'd say he is the best talent we have seen since Romo...which isn't saying a whole lot but it is still better then what we have had.

if Vaughn isn't the answer, I hope we address it soon. I would hate to see a stop-gap in there. We need to find the answer and soon.

This is probably not a popular opinion but hey - this is a message board and this is my opinion ! I would not draft a QB this year, I would roll the dice that Romo has at least 2-3 good years left (all dependent on his health - which I expect to be better with no off-season surgery). I would stay with Weeden as the primary backup and Vaughn as developmental QB. Romo sat for 4 years !
I think Weeden is an OK backup, and the longer he sits behind Romo the more comfortable he becomes. Not a long term solution but good enough to backup and come in during mop up, end of game scenario's. As he did in the game he threw a TD in mop up duties.
I agree with the premise that with Romo still playing strong, we cannot take a QB high, and have him sit 3-4 years - his rookie contract would be up by the time Romo retires and then we would again have to pay big money to a unproven QB. We would need at least a few years on their rookie contract - ala a Russell Wilson type Scenario.
Play Weeden as the backup, trust that it will get better as he practices every week and the off-season - as he should have been given when drafted. Continue to develop Vaughn, and he either surpasses Weeden by the next off season or we again address the position next year (Only probably 2 years for a QB to sit behind Romo, giving the team 3 years on that rookie contract.)
I highly doubt we will get lucky enough to have an undrafted QB play up to Romo's standards, so we will at some point have to draft one reasonably high - just not this year ...

I'm not quite as confident in Weeden, but I do think Vaughn has potential and the Cowboys have more pressing needs on the defensive side of the ball; particularly at CB, DE and DT dependent on Melton's retention.

I remember when we drafted Stephen McGee. You could tell had such a LONG way to go and didn't really ever show flashes. Vaughn has already shown more than McGee ever did. So, hopefully he shows some improvement this year and maybe plays himself into the backup role and we don't have to carry 3 QBs this year.

Would have loved to have Cardale Jones...it would have been a huge gamble, but he reminds me of a Big Ben type player.

People say, in today's NFL, that you can no longer draft a QB like GB did and let him sit for 2-3 years.

I'm kinda wondering 'Why Not?'

The salary cap impact certainly isn't what is was before the rookie salary slotting was implemented.

Before Aaron Rodgers, they were saying you couldn't do it like SF was able to with Steve Young. You can do it. It's just expensive. But the position is too important to not fill.

It'll be interesting to see what we do this season. Rough draft for quality QB depth, we're close, and we desperately need defensive help. I think I look for a quality VFA and see who wins in the Vaughan-v.-Vets derby unless somebody I absolutely love just falls into my lap. If the later happens, I'd pull the trigger--even in round one if it came to that.

Austin Davis

Will be 28-29 by the time Romo retires, then we can have him take over for a nice 5 year run

I'm an Austin Davis fan. He'd fit perfect here and we won't skip a beat once Romo retires. Plays like Romo also.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Cleveland is just a stop over for Manziel until Jerry's body is ready for him.

The QB situation is a tough one for us in the near future as we know the end could be near with Romo and his back. My guess is the best strategy is just to keep riding Romo until he collapses as it is very unlikely we will be able to acquire an elite starting quality QB where we will be drafting the next few years. Those guys usually go in the top 10 and there is still a high bust rate up there.

Now we can go the route of developing a guy from a small school who has gone unnoticed. This strategy doesn't waste resources we need to build the team around Romo to maximize our chances of a championship while we still have a franchise QB. We are trying this with Vaughan and I am fine with the decision to stash him on the 53 for a couple of seasons and develop his game with no intention of playing him.

Now there is one scenario which is unlikely but should be considered. That is what to do if a guy who we project into a potential franchise QB actually drops to us in the first and we don't think will be available to us in the second. I would just go ahead and draft the kid and worry about any other details later. You never pass up the chance to take a franchise guy because there typically is only one such guy every other draft.

I am on board with bringing in Austin Davis, or Shuan Hill for that matter. Shuan Hill for a year or two to back up Romo of course, he is not the future.
