Cleveland is just a stop over for Manziel until Jerry's body is ready for him.

Unless he has a massive change of heart/personality, he doesn't fit in with Garrett's vision of a football team. A QB must be a leader and must be the hardest working player on the team. That description doesn't fit JFF. Garrett and Stephen Jones don't want him and will oppose Jerry.

Now having said that, watching JFF fall flat on his face will probably convince Jerry that he was wrong and his skills won't translate to the NFL.

The QB situation is a tough one for us in the near future as we know the end could be near with Romo and his back. My guess is the best strategy is just to keep riding Romo until he collapses as it is very unlikely we will be able to acquire an elite starting quality QB where we will be drafting the next few years. Those guys usually go in the top 10 and there is still a high bust rate up there.

Now we can go the route of developing a guy from a small school who has gone unnoticed. This strategy doesn't waste resources we need to build the team around Romo to maximize our chances of a championship while we still have a franchise QB. We are trying this with Vaughan and I am fine with the decision to stash him on the 53 for a couple of seasons and develop his game with no intention of playing him.

Now there is one scenario which is unlikely but should be considered. That is what to do if a guy who we project into a potential franchise QB actually drops to us in the first and we don't think will be available to us in the second. I would just go ahead and draft the kid and worry about any other details later. You never pass up the chance to take a franchise guy because there typically is only one such guy every other draft.

I would agree with all of this; I would also if I were the Front Office looking at stockpiling some lower round picks as much as possible the next two or three years and gradually try and trade them for higher rd picks; so that in say 3 years we got a couple of extra 3rds and maybe an extra 2nd. Then we would have some ammunition to trade up with if someone we wanted got close to us in the 1st rd.

Outside of Romo, how many franchize QBs have ever been taken really low and have then developed over a period of years to become a top QB? anyone thinking this is likely is smoking something very strong. Develope a backup Guy; then if lightning strikes again and we get another Romo then fine. Otherwise plan A should be targeting a guy that we truly believe will be a franchize QB and get him - regardless of costs- BUT not this year or next as long as Romo is romo.

Tom Brady, arguably the greatest quarterback ever, was taken in the 6th round. Tomorrow he is playing in his 9th Conference Championship game.

It is really pretty simple
All the zebras tell you is that zebras are uncommon and horses are more common
Exceptions make the rule they don't refute it
Finding someone like tony shows us how unlikely it is that this will happen again do we will need to get our QB in rd 1

Plenty of somewhat recent examples of QBs who won the Superbowl who weren't first round picks:
  • Russell Wilson
  • Joe Flacco
  • Drew Brees
  • Tom Brady
  • Brett Favre
  • Brad Johnson
  • Mark Rypien
  • Jeff Hostetler
  • Joe Montana
  • Joe Theisman
  • Bart Starr
  • Kenny Stabler
  • Roger Staubach
  • Steve Young (probably would have been a 1st rounder if he had went straight to the NFL)
By my rough count these QBs represent slightly less than half of Superbowl winners.

My point here is that it <is possible> to win Superbowls with QBs who aren't 1st round picks.

Just because Dallas couldn't replace Aikman, that doesn't mean it will be that hard to replace Romo. Things were different back then and JJones was pretty arrogant in the way he rant the team. He was determined to show anyone could coach the team and that he was smarter then everyone else and could build a winner out of scraps.

When do you think the cowboys will target a qb to groom? Its obviously not going to be a first round stud due to us being competitive the next few years. Which leads you to drafting a QB in the second round and later.

When do we do it, and who do think it will be?

Dough Jerra half done a good job with the o line and receivers and hiring coach Marinade he half left that question linger waaay to long for me and some fans who are visionaries and stuff. When Romo start thowilng like Faking Manning then we face a 3 year desert of being without a adequate superstar QB. I say half a QB summit and go after peeps like Colt McCoy, young enough but with experience. That will bridge the gap.
Stick with me and I will leed you to good ideas.

This is a weak QB class, especially after the crab theif and Mariotta. I think those two will be another let-down as well. This is not the year to draft a QB early or maybe not at all.

I don't now why, but Winston has the best chance to succeed, maybe because I think his game will translate to the NFL but he has to mature or it will all be for not.

IMO, roll with Vaughn as back-up and look to draft someone in the next couple of years. If Romo goes down, we are toast anyways no matter who we have behind him at this point. Concentrate on defense and another offensive lineman filling in smaller holes as needed.

No on Winston (and I'm an FSU fan). He can't read defenses and misses alot.

Getting a next great QB is either complete luck or extremely hard. Sometimes you can't even tell on top prospects going into the pros.

This is not the year to draft a QB high. Too close to a championship to waste a resource on someone who isn't going to play, besides they're isn't much to pick from in this draft anyhow.

Vaughan will be special, I think. Has all the tools (arm, pocket presence, mental, confidence, reasonable accuracy). The question will be does he have the drive that the greats display. If he does, I think he has the tools to be Aaron Rogers 2.0. Not kidding. Or he could just be a decent career backup. It's all about what's in his heart...

I hope he develops into the next Tom Brady but that seems unlikely. Reading his draft reports, he has small hands so his passes aren't as smooth as a Romo's. He is 6'5" but he is listed as too slow to escape pressure, holds the ball too long, and forces passes. We can coach him but some of that is inherent to the player and can't be fixed. It also seems that he doesn't have the ability to throw accurate deep passes.

This all could be wrong but it looks like a career backup is more likely than a franchise QB.
