Let's say we trade for him. Doesn't all his guarantee money stay with Philly leaving only salary?
No.
All of DeMarco Murray's remaining signing bonus proration ($4M) would escalate and remain on Philadelphia's 2016 salary cap, but the running back's guaranteed base salaries in '16 and 2017 would be assumed by the team trading for him.
Murray has an $8M cap number this year and the Eagles would actually save $4M (plus the cost of a new contract replacing Murray) by trading the disappointing rusher.
The new team would then have Murray's contract, including a fully guaranteed $7M base salary in 2016 and $2M of his $7.5M base salary in 2017.
However, if Murray is on the roster the third day of the '17 NFL league year (in March), another $3M of his base salary that season becomes guaranteed and he will earn a $500K roster bonus.
2018 and '19 also have $500K roster bonuses and each year of the contract contains performance escalators tied to rushing yards.
I don't like that contract.
Murray is good at everything while being great at nothing. I like him better than Darren McFadden, but would prefer to add someone else in free agency and/or the draft.
