Re-draft question Smith vs JJ Watt

No wrong answer, both guys are impact players on the trenches. Smart pick by both teams.

Either team and anyone else in those spots would have benefitted immensely by taking either guy, so like you said, there's no wrong pick here.

But were the whole league to redraft based on what is known now, neither one of these guys would have made it to Dallas.

You should watch the Steelers. I watched too much of them but I have to admit, that was one of the all time great defenses for sure.

Watching the special on MJ Greene really wasn't even that bad, considering how much they battled with the Cowboys back then. It was just a really good show on an all-time great DT. Until I watched that and remembered how incredibly quick he was and what a mean edge he played with... I had forgotten just how good the guy really was. wow.

Since I am wanting Dallas to get a few guys who play mean on defense, it was particularly relevant to me right now. I really enjoyed it.

Those Steeler defenses of the mid to late 70's had a mean enforcer at each level of that defense: MJ Greene on the line, Lambert at LB, and Mel Blount in the backfield. Blount was probably the meanest of them all. He was just an assassin.

I can't help but admire great defense, and that was the best ever IMO.

Right. That's why guys like Decon, Paige, Eller, Olsen, Buchanon, Martin etc. are not often mentioned in these kinds of conversations. But they were all great, great players.

I agree.

I agree, like you I was able to watch those guys play and there was some great ones. Seeing the Doomsday defense (I and II) seeing the Steele Curtain, Fearsome foursome and Purple people eaters are some fond memories growing up.

I was just getting old enough to start watching in the mid to late 70's. I remember the steel curtain (best name ever), Of course Doomsday 1 and 2, and then the 85 Bears and those great LT led Giants defenses.

We have Ro, Wilcox, and Church who play with aggressiveness. Those guys love to hit!!

The Eagles had a pretty dominating defensive line as well. When they had Reggie, Brown and Simmons, they were tough.

Back when the only rules was if the guy had the ball kick his butt. lol

I watch plenty of football but never watch the Steelers on my Ticket.

If I want to watch good defensive guys from that era I have stuff on Randy White, Harvey.

Well, if you ever change your mind, you should do it. If you wonder what a mean, intimidating player does for a defense, you can watch that and get your answer.

It would be hard for guys like Cliff Harris to understand the term defenseless WR. What do you mean I can’t hit him now because he is defenseless? lol

Yep. Hard to play that kind of football anymore. The game was better then IMO. I know people love offense but there is something about watching a physically dominating defensive style of football that I really enjoy. I like it better when the defense is not just a speed bump on the way to a score. Those days are gone now.

Right? That's the best time to hit him!

At least, that's what I imagine Cliff would say.

I never understood that to me I enjoy watching football, not any particular side of the ball or hey leave the QB alone because people want to see them. Myself I want to see Football

Your less likely to get hurt getting hit with your feet off the ground. Drew Pearson made an art of it, catch the ball and go with the hit.

I agree. To me, the game is more enjoyable when the scoring is in doubt.

True enough. While I was watching that special, I couldn't believe all they were getting away with.

Here is the MJ Greene special. Start watching at 2:08 until 2:50 and then watch from 3:02 for a few seconds and watch him walk by the Eagle player and nonchalantly elbow him in the face mask. LOL, the good old days.

I guess I am young & naive but many of those old time defensive guys are brain damaged from years of knocking guys blocks off.

The NFL had to do something. It may be flag football-ish (is that a word?) but they had to.

The Chiefs players that killed his girl & himself had brain damage. Junior did. That Bears guy that killed himself.

Back on topic..JJ everytime! :D
