Re-draft question Smith vs JJ Watt

When you have a $100 million QB you take the LT every time .

You can argue this for either side. The 90s Packers and Favre don't get their Superbowl unless they go out and outbid everybody and sign Reggie White.

Monster DL can just as easily be the piece to put a team over the top.

Smith would be the choice for me. Still only 23, no reason he can't have another 10 years playing at a high level. DL tend to wear down sooner.

Charles Haley agrees!!!!

And Reggie was owned by Eric Williams
Give me smith every time

Reggie White was in his 30s by the time he and Williams started battling. White back in his USFL days and his early days in Philly he was much more of a holy terror than his final years in Green Bay and Carolina.

Reggie was a monster in philly..... I hated him, and loved him at the same time..... "The Minister of Defense"...
(better than jj in my opinion, i may add.)

I found this from Mr. Todd Archer, (I believe) anyhow, How do you GM's feel this draft redo would play out?

  • Sunday’s game between the Cowboys and Houston Texans will feature two of the best players from the 2011 draft in Tyron Smith and J.J. Watt. I wonder where these guys would go in a re-draft. The Cowboys took Smith with the ninth pick of the first round. The Texans took Watt at No. 11. Cam Newton (Carolina), Von Miller (Denver), Marcell Dareus (Buffalo), A.J. Green (Cincinnati), Patrick Peterson (Arizona), Julio Jones (Atlanta), Aldon Smith (San Francisco) and Jake Locker (Tennessee) went before Smith. Jackonsville took Blaine Gabbert at No. 10 before Watt. There has to be some buyer’s remorse from Buffalo. Miller and Smith have had off-field issues. Locker clearly was the wrong pick. But the folks in Cincinnati, Arizona and Atlanta can’t be upset with their selections. If we’re re-grading the draft, then Smith and Watt would clearly be rated higher.

Wow, this draft was a gold mine. You have 4-5 guys there with Hall of Fame talent and if they all stay healthy they should be Hall of Fame worthy when they hang it up. I know it's still early, but wow ... If you had a top 10 pick that year chances are you got a franchise player. I'm happy we got Tyron Smith, you can't go wrong with an extremely talented LT.

Mature, name calling. Or I can see the importance of an LT over an DE.

Sorry but Watt is a complete defensive lineman and not just a DE. He has an impact ANY PLACE they put him. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the Smith pick, he is great, but he is not the game changer JJ Watt is sorry to say.

Then you have a narrow definition of game changer.

Look, just like my Olajuwon to Jordan comparison post, we did not make a mistake drafting Smith, he is a heck of a player and will be for years to come. But the sad truth is JJ Watt is better.

It's like asking someone to compare Bruce Smith vs Larry Allen

or

Reggie White vs Anthony Munoz

sometimes there is no wrong decision. Fate decides. There are no wrong answers.
Eh...I think Watt won't ever be in the category of Bruce Smith, and is certainly nowhere near the Reggie White category.

I seem him as a guy that averages less than or right at 10 sacks a season, which is really really good, but note elite. He's just riding off that one really good season. And it was an excellent season, but he doesn't appear to be able to come close to that production outside of that one season.

If his stats don't improve, he won't even make the pro bowl this year, unless it's by name recognition alone.

I love both players. watt obviously has more splash plays due to the nature of his position, but Tyron doesn't let people past him. I'm good with Tyron baby!
