FWIW, I do think the Pats need McClain more than the Cowboys do, so if it does come down to them believing he has it still, they will beat us. They decided to go a different direction from Wilfork, Hightower is injured, they've lost their two starting CornerBacks. They need help defensively.

Dont'a Hightower played at an All-Pro level this past season. He's not coming off the field. They also predominantly play two defensive tackles and two standup defensive ends, two linebackers and five defensive backs.
Ya true but in there base 3-4 He played on the outside opposite Collins. Even tho he's a run stopper.

Just because he came in and performed for the Cowboys doesn't erase all the question marks of his past. I don't doubt that they see the talent, but they would be insanely stupid to offer, even in principle, money without having had an interview face to face to understand the player, his motivations, where his heart is, etc. The Pats are known for finding value, but they don't take risks without doing ALL their homework, which in this case would include a discussion face to face.

I'm not saying they won't offer a contract, just that I find it hard to believe that they would have already done so without meeting with him.

First and foremost they would want to see him for a physical before inking the contract. The interview, sure, but they can dial in a contract before a visit. Miles Austin is an example from today.

Miles Austin doesn't come with anywhere near the same emotional and mental history as McClain.

He may be no longer an option, Eberflus was at Kendricks pro day talking him up, it is possible they have moved on and will look to add another LB in the draft fairly early.

I trust the Cowboys on this one. They could easily re-sign the guy to a very modest if they really wanted him.

A lot of that can get squared away pre-visit, phone calls etc. They know what number they are willing to go to and so does Ro. Ro is not the kind of guy who gets on a plane to Massachusetts unless it's close to a done deal.

He quit on us at the end of the season, then got busted for a substance violation. He doesn't have red flags, he has giant LED flashing lights.

Because not having a full off-season of conditioning, nagging injuries after taking a year off of playing time, and apparently two concussions in a row and impending after-effects signifies 'quit'...

I will be really surprised if the Cowboys don't take a LB in the first three rounds of the draft.

What scares me is how many of these posts are on CZ: "we should just draft [insert RB, CB, LB, DT, DE] in the first three rounds of the draft." At some point, our needs are greater than the number of premium picks we have. We need to re-sign guys like McClain and Spencer (and maybe a CB to replace Carr, if he's cut) so that we have SOME flexibility and are not drafting for NEED.

Right. Add in the fact that the draft is a crapshoot as well. I remember Mo being the can't miss DB a couple of years ago.

He helped out a ton during Lee's absence, but I'm confident the FO can find a more than suitable replacement for Rolando McClain,

Suddenly, the Patriots defense needs Mclain more than we do, when we got Glass Joe Sean Lee and everybody was saying our defense was the reason we wouldn't even make the play-offs last year. We aren't even guaranteed to have Hardy most of the year.

When did we start needing players less than the SB winning team. Of course they are cheaters, but you get my point.

Well you draft in the first three rounds looking for starters. Should the board dictate and it's between a new starting LB and a new starting DT or DE, I would go with the LB. But I agree with you, I'd prefer not to be constrained by that choice too much.

He had a confirmed concussion. I don't see that as a valid criticism at all whatsoever.
Would Sean Lee leave the stadium altogether and not show up to practices because of a concussion?

The going got tough and he got going.
