He has to decide if he wants to start somewhere else, if he wants max money or if staying in Dallas with family and friends is enough.........the best way to handle the situation is to renegotiate his contract immediately

He should sign a deal that guarantees him 10m over the next 2 years in base salary with 500k per games started incentives....he can add a third year option but no more guarantees

If he stays as a bak-up to Dak he gets 5m and a chance to go to the SB as a hero if Dak gets hurt......it lowers his cap hit to 15.7m saving DAL 9m on the cap this year and 15m next year

If he gets traded he gets 5m + up to 8m in starts for 13m total and a chance to join a playoff caliber team ....even if he gets hurt and misses time he has 5m coming to him in 2018........ but it keeps his cap number down for the new team that trades for him to 5m in 2017 adding more teams to the dance

Right now he is owed 3yr/54m but none of it is guaranteed, including his 14m base salary this year..... more teams would be more willing to jump if he had an incentive laden contract......his contract and his health questions are stumbling blocks but he is too good to just give away.....if teams know Dallas will keep him they will have to up their interest

DAL should also ask for conditional trades.....they could take a 1st or 2nd this year but offer back a 4th next year if he misses 8 games or more......if the trade comes after the draft just make it a conditional 1st or 3rd for 2018 depending on games played

There is nothing left for Romo to do. Dallas is bluffing, and the potential Romo suitors appear to have called their bluff. Now we wait while both sides play a game of chicken. My guess is that he's cut and we get nothing. Best case, we get a conditional 3rd.

Have you called and told him this yet?

You love to pretend that you have it all figured out but you are just guessing like the rest of us...... no one, not even Jerry knows what Jerry is going to do day to day

c'mon, I do

Not expecting Romo to retire, but if he did, anyone thinking Dallas would make him pay back sunk cost guaranteed money already paid (when Dallas would eat it anyway with a waiver or trade) are way off base.

Romo has no leverage........his contract is not guaranteed

DAL could release him Sept 9th and he would get nothing but hope a new team signs him that late

If he retires he owes 12.5m........ no leverage at all
Tony has all the leverage. He is wealthy, young and has tremendous opportunities off the field. He can do exactly what he wants. He is in the drivers seat. He can pack it in right now and retire rich, fat and happy. He is calling the shots. Jones doesn't like it, be sure, but Tony Romo decides his own future! He will retire or go where he wants IF he is wanted there. He will not be a back up or play for small money.

Hogwash, Romo doesn't have to do a single thing except get conditioned to play football somewhere this year. He is not going to renegotiate anything with the Cowboys. The Cowboys hold his rights and can keep him and pay his contract or release him. They don't seem to have a trading partner right now and most likely won't unless some team gets desperate. Romo's agents are just going to let this thing play out for awhile you can bet. We will see how this thing goes when the off-season workouts begin. If Romo get's hurt during workouts, OTA's or TC if he goes, he is a vested vet and will get his entire salary for the year. Romo has lots of leverage here and he can sit back and wait for the FO to get off their
chairs and make a decision. If I were Romo and they asked me to take a paycut and backup Dak, I would give them the finger.

Exactly...............If I was Romo, I would tell Dallas that a contract is a contract and you either pay me the $54 million left on my contract or you release/trade me. That's it, nothing else to debate or discuss.

Tony needs to come to his senses and hang em up while he can still enjoy his kids without the assistance of a hoverround, accept that kushy gig at Fox replacing Lynch that he has already been offered and enjoy life.
He's a had great career and wore the star proudly.

If he is traded the new team wouldn't be so sentimental as you guys

He can't play for someone else unless DAL allows it.......how is that leverage???

He is under contract for 3 more years

You probably don't understand but that means DAL dictates where he plays

If he retires then what did he win??? Nothing

DAL has already replaced him and benched him so they aren't sweating it

Really.....DAL says no and makes you sit all year again

You think another team signs you next year?

Your girl wouldn't get off the phone
So Tony is cheating on Candace, his pregnant wife, with my girlfriend. This is as equally dumb as your original post. Thank you for confirming my opinion of your intelligence.

It's going to come down to whoever Jerry can get draft picks from. At this time I do not think Jerry is going to do what's best for Romo. This is a business and all participants know this. If JJ doesn't get any offer's he will wait until September to release him. This is what I believe will happen.

JJ holds the cards not Romo.

September?

That aint happening bro, Romo is not going to be allowed to work out at the Star or at training camp so a decision will be made by then. Why you ask? Because if Romo grabs his back during practice and says he is hurt, Dallas is now on the hook for his entire salary for 2017.

Even if he is not really hurt, he can pretend to be hurt if these negotiations get nasty. Jay Ratliff did this exact same thing, claimed he was injured and sat on the bench till the team released him and then signed with Chicago like two days later.

Bottom line.............it never works out to hold a player hostage, really sours relationships in a hurry and Jerry doesn't want that.

I'm calling it right now. The Cowboys will make a trade with the Texans on DRAFT DAY.
The Cowboys will swap picks with the Texans, the 20th for the 28th pick and the 52nd for the 60th pick and, maybe the Texans toss in a 4th/5th round pick. The Texans in turn will get Tony Romo.

The Cowboys will then deal the 20th pick, move down and pick up maybe another third or fourth round pick as a team below will be looking to catch one of the young quarterbacks or running backs who are falling.

So let it be written.
So let it be done.

That would be a really cool scenario if the Texans actually had the 20th pick............that is Denver's pick bro:facepalm:

We can easily afford to keep his whole 14m salary and would have the best bak up to Dak we could have
