you cannot just borrow from the future every year and stop cold turkey without unfairly squeezing the year you are in.
we routinely restructure dez and tcrawford in the past.
by choosing not to in 2017, we are squeezing the 2017 budget.
this is simply stupid to do after a 13-3 year.
if you want to deleverage, do it after a bad year.

you could easily have 23 million in cap space.
you only need ~$6M of cap space per top FA for the 1st year.
2018 and 2019 have plenty of cap space so those are not problems.
i have already showed how that money can be handled in the future.

Stephen Jones was the CPA of the year

He made 60m in cap space look like a negative balance .......he should be a tax attorney

LOL.........he is a true genius. He never signs anyone, never has cap space, but he could really sign anyone he wants. LOL

They had a few strategic FA signings, but aside from Ward, Talib and Ware, that defense was homegrown. That's why I said I would have been cool with Ingram and Buoye. You don't just throw money at decent players who are marginal upgrades and expect it to work. Because it doesn't.
Don't forget Peyton Manning, E Sanders, WWelker, CHarris and 40% of their OL

DEN went all in twice and it worked just fine for them and they still have 35m in cap space today

Ok so lets imaging that the Cowboys have all this wonderful cap space. Why didnt they go out and get the pass rushers and defensive players they need to win a championship this year?

Harris was homegrown and the offense was quite mediocre that year.

if you are cool with ingram and bouye, then there is no disagreement at least with me.
of course, the CB the patriots got may be equivalent to bouye - i am not sure.
of course ingram was not available.
my only other issue was not signing a RT who is dependable.
if we had those nailed down, then the draft could essentially focus on getting a daddy.

These guys will never get it. If the Cowboys had gone out and signed 3 high priced guys they would be saying how great it was.

But since they didnt, they will tell you its because they are just being cap savvy and are doing a great job managing the cap.

Anything they do, some excuse or whacked out reasoning will be applied.

well they may really have thought none of the DEs were any good.
that would be a reasonable position.
but then why not nail down at least a CB and RT first by FA
then go all passrusher for the draft

That is all we need is a few.

That just isn't true but don't make this all about TCrawford

Huge amounts of cap space has always been readily available

We have 40m in space and have finished our Xmas shopping or we have a bak up QB with a 25m cap hit......that is not a cap problem in any universe
Romo had made no indication nor has the front office shown any willingness to try and force Romo into a backup role.

Yes technically the money is there. But there is no desire to spend 14mm for a player you hope never plays a down doe you.

But the markee guys aren't available - or weren't available. Except a couple. Most of the FA available weren't upgrades for what we have or lost.

we only needed a couple to nail down enough of the roster to daddy hunting in the draft.

There's some names in there I wouldn't mind giving a 1-2 year deal to. It wouldn't hurt and could help bolster the defense.

fact of the matter is that we have 48 players not counting romo and moore the crazy de.
we will likely keep at least 5 from the draft and udfas.
instead of going for quantity, they should have improved the quality in the cb/rt free agents.
now, nothing is secure except for wr and have to hope for another 2016 draft.
that is call laying down for 2017.

He was part of the big spending spree though......he got 5/42m to stay

DEN went all in with Peyton and had a great O and got spanked in the SB

Then they doubled down and bought a great D to match with Peyton and a couple key defenders and won it all

Even a couple key FA signings on D and a possible return of JSmith, DLawrence, GTapper, a 1st rd pick, a 2nd rd pick could be huge

BBell's contract was larger than expected so the new cap number is down to 9m or so depending on his 450k in weight clauses

It starts at 1.25m and can go to 2.5m
