Spurs Fans, please tell me this. How do you deal with the extremely biased p-b-p analysis of Sean Elliott & Company? I was extremely annoyed with them watching Spurs-Grizzlies last night. Are they really that subjective?

this was brought up a lot last night. they are the local broadcasting team for the spurs and, as such, they are very biased. this isnt any different than any other local guys (specially the nuggets guys, they are REALLY bad). we like it just fine considering we are thinking what they are a lot of the times. Sean Elliot is very entertaining though, i specially liked his chicken salad comment last night, I lold. In fact, sean elliot was offered a job at TNT a couple of years back but he turned it down because he didnt want to be away from san antonio and because he says he enjoys openly cheering for his old team. he actually doesnt go on long road trips with the broadcasting team, such as the rodeo road trip.

but anyway San Antonio is a 1 team town, spurs games get very high local ratings (i think they are either number 1 or near the top of the league in terms of local tv ratings) and a very high percentage of those people watching games are spurs fans (id say, from when i lived in SA) its something like 85% are spurs fans, maybe 5-10% lakers fans and then a combination of the rest between the final 5-10%.

sorry to go off on a tangent on that, but anyway, the real problem is not that the spurs broadcasters, like most all local broadcasters, are biased. its the fact that NBAtv cant get their own broadcasters for playoff games! its pretty sad, they could easily have some guy with chris webber or brent barry do the games from studio or something.

plus people in memphis got to watch it on their local FSN too, so its not like the local market had to suffer through it.

Yeah, the Mavs local broadcasts are biased too. They are really paid to provide the home team perspective. Some broadcast teams are bit over-the-top though.

Yeah we had our local announcers for the game also.

On a different note I thought I was watching an NFL game last night the way Manu and Blair were running into the other players. Are they normally like that? :laugh2:

I don't know, but it would be nice for a headlock to be called a foul. Also, why was Allen all upset at Manu? I mean anytime an offensive player gets a defensive player to jump, the offensive player immediately jumps into the airborne defensive player to draw a foul. This has been going on for decades in the NBA. Allen should be mad at himself for biting so hard on the fake. It was simply unfortunate how Allen landed and luckily he was not injured.

I would like to know one thing. Why is it that the Gasol brothers are allowed to religiously set moving screens and picks without being called for a foul, while pretty much every other big man in the league gets whistled?

Yeagar...props to your team, they are fighting hard and are very hungry. Zach Randolph and Shane Battier were superb additions. I remember just a few years ago, everyone felt the ownership was merely throwing in the towel and looking to either sell or move...now they have a real up and coming contender on their hands. I will give your team props for how they played after the all-star break. I forget the coach's name, Lionel something....but he has them playing all out and really committed to playing on both ends of the floor. This is definitely a grind it out, not so pretty, blue collar team....reminds me of the Spurs during much of the Tim Duncan era. Zach Randolph simply owns the Spurs.

Still with all those props....the Spurs should be undefeated against Memphis this year. Since the all-star break, the Spurs have not been able to close out games. Even games they have well in hand, they have found ways to lose....like the Portland game a few weeks ago. Even game 1 on Sunday, they were up by 4 with a minute left...and became careless with the ball....turnovers and poor shots. That was their M.O. during that 6 game losing streak. They get a lead late, but then they go brain dead and allow the other team to be quite clutch.

I believe the win last night was huge for the Spurs. It was another close, grind it out game, that they had in hand late, yet almost let slip away. In the end, they found a way to win the game. Winning a game like that is huge.....I firmly believe it will carry over. I picked the Spurs in 5 and I am sticking to it. I mean no disrespect to Memphis. I do not see a blow out in any game. I believe they will all come down to the final minutes, but the Spurs will find a way to win.

GO SPURS GO

of course the Spurs announcers are biased, they work for the Spurs...HELLO people. Still, as homeristic as Sean Elliott is, he often gives props to the opponent. He also does a fair share of berating the Spurs. I never hear the Celtics or Suns announcers give credit to the opponent. All they do is make excuses. Sean holds the Spurs players accountable for their play, but at the same time, will let it be known that the opponent has a hand in how good or bad the Spurs are playing. He has been talking up the Grizzlies. So while he is a homer, and getting paid to be a homer, he has quite a few unbiased moments in his commentary. He is my favorite NBA announcer after Hubie Brown.....now that Bill Walton is gone.

sean elliot is a really good announcer and if he didnt want to stay in san antonio with his family he could be a lead color guy for either TNT or ABC, EASILY! he is hillarious and knows his stuff, i was glad he stayed with the local spurs broadcast a couple of years ago when i was in austin, but now that i live in DFW i wish he would move up so i could see him do national games

I always liked Sean as a player and was really happy when the Spurs won the championship. I can't speak to him as an announcer but like others have said all local announcers are biased. :laugh2:

BTW, I am still bitter about the Spurs drafting Marcus Williams a few years ago instead of Marc Gasol. I know we had just drafted Ian Mahimni, but still, I wanted Gasol...and you can never have too many quality bigs. Instead, the Spurs drafted Williams and the Lakers drafted Gasol, which allowed for the Pau trade later on. If the Spurs draft Marc Gasol, then in all likelihood, the Lakers would have had to part with Bynum to get Pau....

Then again, if the Spurs had drafted Marc, I doubt they would have drafted Tiago....not that it matters...since, even though they are outsized right now, Pop refuses to play an athletic 7 footer who plays solid defense and crashes the glass. But, at least the Lakers would be less formidable. Also, if the Grizzlies had gotten Bynum, I wonder if they would have gone after Zach Randolph....hmm.

Speaking of Randolph....I can't stand him for how he abuses the Spurs...but other than that, I cannot complain about the guy. He is a blue collar, hard nosed post player. He isnt a pretty boy and he doesn't try to sell calls. He merely does the dirty work down low and sacrifices his body. His game is ugly but effective. He also is a decent defender. He isn't a lockdown defender, but he puts his body out there and isn't afraid of contact like a lot of the big men in the league today. I would love to have him on the Spurs.

They are ours and you can't have them so  :laugh2:

Don't even get me started on the Grizzlies drafting luck :banghead:

I think the key is Pop refuses to play an athletic 7 foot rookie (Splitter). If the Spurs had drafted Gasol, he probably would be playing in the starting line-up for the past couple of years. It's too bad Splitter didn't come over from Europe three years ago when the Spurs drafted him. He probably would have helped them quite a bit these past couple of years. Unfortunately, by the time he develops now, Duncan will be at the tail end of his career.

He had to go to Europe...He was using the extra income to help pay for his sister's medical bills. Unfortunately she has since passed away, but I do not fault him for going for the money, especially in this circumstance.

I do firmly believe that had she been healthy, he would have come over when he was drafted.

Well I meant he is very knowledgeable, funny and is easy to understand. He wouldn't be biased if he worked for the national channels, dick Stockton use to do the games with Sean before bill land and he transitioned just fine to TNT

Ya, as great as pop is, he is so stubborn sometimes! We would have fared better vs the mavs 2 years ago had he allowed george hill to play, but for some reason he doesn't trust rookies in the playoffs not named Duncan or ginobili. (granted we would have lost since Manu didn't play, but we could have made it competitive). Hopefully he gives tiago a chance the rest of the series

next year we need to go back to the oldschool defense first style, even if we only win 55 games its worth it in the playoffs
