Should Marion Barber be our feature back? *MERGE*

Good afternoon my friends! The Prophet is pondering the question, "do we have the depth chart at running back in the wrong order?" Hmmmm??? LOL.

The Prophet has a gut instinct that one Marion Barber should be given the rock instead of the injury prone Julius Jones. Oh don't get me wrong friends, at times ole JJones has looked splendid. But sadly his performance is streaky at best and quickly snuffed by yet another injury.

Marion Barber on the other hand, seems consistent and determined in the limited times he has been used.

As always, thoughts on this board by others welcome.

Oh by the way, the FWST Cowboy board will be up in running again in short order due to my tireless efforts.

The Prophet

I'm not concerned about who is starting I expect to see both guys out there doing the job and getting a good amount of carries this season.

Didn't The Rock already do the whole "3rd Person" thing to death? Im just guessing...

Actually, The Rock got it from Bob Dole.:rake:

I'm everywhere lol,on topic no way JJ has his break out year and Marion as good as he is, he still has to learn to run around guys not over them. Good example was last game when instead of jukin the SS he just ran at him and tried to run him over. Bottom line 2 different back's that will have a home here in Dallas for years to come.

Hambrick looked good behind Emmitt. Nuff said :D

I noticed in the neener niner game that Julius Jones was trying to power up into the defenders more like Barber. I think Jones should still be the featured back with Barber being used in third down situations and be featured late in the 3d or throughout the 4th quarter.

Either Jones or Barber can be spelled by Tyson Thomas. That's a nasty threesome to keep the opponents defense on their heels.

It has been a long time since we fielded a competitive talented team, but it sure is starting to feel like it again. This is the most excited I have been over the start of a new Cowboys season in nearly a decade. Holy cack!

The difference between JJ and Barber is the difference between Emmitt and Barry. If you want a guy to dazzle you with an occasional highlight run, but also plague you with a lot of runs for negative or no yardage that stagnate a drive go with JJ. If you want a guy who is going to move the chains, keep time of possession and win you a close football game go with MB3. If MB3 didn't already have to fill all the nickel packages, I have no doubt he would have already supplanted Julius already.

A lesser version of Sanders and Smith I take it? :laugh2:

Jones has higher potential, but has to stay healthy. Barber is a nice 3rd down option, but I just can't see him as being someone you want to be the feature back for a team. He just doesn't have the breakaway.

I suspect if you were to break down Barber's carries you would find a lot of yardage on 3rd and long plays. Parcells does like running on 3rd and long, and it usually doesn't get a 1st, its just to improve field position.

This has never been proven.

how could it....our o-line the last few years!

but this year he must show cuz we have the pieces on the line, and the passing game to draw 4 men. No more 8 in the box or else we will just torch people.

A lot of people said that about Tiki Barber as well. Marion Barber does not have the speed of Jones but on the other hand he is not a plow mule either.

Well, that, and the "in short order" part. I could see "in that regard". But how do "efforts" get done "in short order"?

Anyhow....doesn't lane already have a thread about this? :D

MB3 is almost forced to be our nickel back out of default, since Julius is so poor as a receiver. As a result, I don't see MB3 ever becoming the lead back just for the sake of snap distribution. But if its crunch time and the Cowboys need a sustained drive to wind down the clock and cinch the win, I would prefer to see MB3 on the field. No question. I have no faith in Julius to pick up tough yards in tough sledding.

Yeah, but I wanted to give people more time to bash him...

I'm such an evil mod sometimes. :D

I'm gonna be honest with you...I think we're all gimmicked out. TheAnswer, Bledsoe4mvp....any other moron who thinks his schtick is hilarious....they've worn us down.

We want football.

You are missing the point totally and taking my point far too literally. What my post is saying is that Barber is a better back when there is poor blocking. But Julius can look like an elite back when the blocking is good.

Let's simplify these even more -- which of the two back has had a game that made you think he was the best runner in the league that week?

It will be interesting to see how many carries Thompson may get this year. He had 46 carries last season.
