Against good teams you aren’t gonna get a lot of legit shots at explosive plays. That’s when you just move the chains and pick your spots to shoot for an explosive play
Exactly. You are just raising the probability of the defense getting you off the field or opening yourself up for interceptions

Defended Moore for years here. An outstanding coach. Lots of loonie criticism around here towards him, framed with bizarro word salad.

Personnel should be all set for a step-up for offensive improvement:
-Tyler S no longer a rookie
-Steele back
-Cook added
-Gallup healed
-Schoonie
-Deuce

But the loss of Moore is gonna hurt, IMO...and things could go backwards.

I could be wrong but I think MM's thing is to build your game around each opponent's weakness and that may differ from game to game. For example, why are passing for over 300 yards against a defense ranked 27th against the run? So yea, the offense could take a step back but we could also be a better team, especially post-season.

BTW........remember the Pats tried to jack their offense with Randy Moss? Lead the league in darn near every offensive stat but missed the SB.
They missed going undefeated by the luckiest catch in SB History.

I think this is one of those times when stats don't tell the entire story.

I think Moore was a pretty good OC. I think his teams could put up points, especially against inferior defenses. But there were times, when facing a legitimate defense, they could bog down. Now was it all Moore's fault? No. There were some talent issues, Dak (especially last year) could get wonky from week to week. But still, in some of our biggest games over the last 2-3 years, there were times when it seemed the opposing DC just had a leg up on Moore.

Now I am not suggesting McCarthy is going to fix all that. There's a chance he will not be very good and this offense will just flounder around a bit. But I think some, like Hasselback, are falling too in love with the numbers and not taking a more macro look at this in their praise of Moore. I don't have an issue letting him walk.
Great post

Broken record: When the defense didn't generate turnovers, the offense didn't generate points consistently. Given that Dallas lead the league in takeaways for 2 straight years, the points scored by the team overstates the offense's ability.

The big question is which coach will take the fall for Dak at the end of this season.

I heard that McCarthy really doesn’t care about stats and offensive rankings.

I feel like we’re going to lean towards ball control.
Ball controll is definitely "where it's at" in 2023 modern NFL.

The NFL rules definitely cater to teams that prioritize running the ball, defense, and dink and dunk passing.

Like to see 3 fullbacks on the game day roster.

Yards? Points? Who needs those. Gotta win Time of Possession Battle.

The Cowboys had some real good, high scoring offenses under Kellen Moore. The only reason he’s not here is because of Dak’s inconsistent play and INT‘s last season. It’s going to be hard to improve over what we’ve had. Everyone loved Kellen Moore when he first arrived but fans are fickle. It’s not going to take fans long to hate on McCarthy and Schottenheimer if the offense starts to sputter and we don’t see the scoring we’ve seen.
Under KM offensive things , we beat up poor defenses and familiar NFC foes. But when meeting a better defense or resilient ones we struggled , the more offensive struggles the more mistakes and turnovers. Which lead to getting kicked out of playoffs -

last season 1st nail - GB game 14 points up but scored nada in 2nd half mostly. The opposing defense once woke up, combo of Dak & KM couldnt do anything.

2nd nail - Jacksonville , again comfortably up but JVille with some luck ( Trevor L) scored and caught up, again another mistake in OT cost us.
( last game against Washington again , offensive diarrhea)

if both of those games had been wrapped up , we would been 1st seed and would have an easier path to NFCC.

instead we got a lower seed than SF and had to go through that which was final nail in the coffin.

it is going to be TBD under Big Mac and schottenheimer , but their plan is more effective running, shorter throws ( hopefully easier for our QB) and use YAC from WRs to move the ball , hold on to the ball longer so that D wont be gassed.

I agree with this take. Look at the 9ers and philly. Dink and dunk and just milk the clock to keep the defense fresh. We have the offense to score quickly if needed.

After two 5-12 seasons we really needed a change.

From my observation KM's offense put up some big numbers, but there were times during the regular season and the playoffs
that his play selection didn't match the situation of the game, and I think that is what MM wants to change.

I'm not going to beat down KM now that he is gone but I remember sometimes over the years
yelling at the TV, why the hell did call that??

Oh I agree but look who are QB is..

He’s not an elite passer and he can’t run.

So it’s going to be up to the defense and ground game if we ever want to win anything.

I think we all know as long as Dak Prescott is the QB this team isn’t going to win anything.

If Dak doesn’t perform better against the better defenses things won’t change despite the change in OC. The change was made to try and fix Dak.

Way too many 3 and outs last year. Offense was plodding and predictable leading to a lot of garbage time points. We need to keep the chains moving more and not play from behind as much.

It’s possible, he got a lot of criticism with his play calling in greenbay
