Sounds like Mazi could be in a better place this year

if he doesn't get of the ball better than he did last year, he will need to put on 100lbs so he can just fall over and clog a hole. He was so slow with his get off last year that he allowed the OL to get into him and this isn't college where his strength could just move the OL. In the NFL, if he doesn't change that part of his game, he will be out of the league before long.

HE was so big and strong in college he could get away with that most of the time. Here he cannot.
Bottom line is he should not have been a first rd pick; more and more he appears to be a developmental guy who should NEVER be picked in the first rd

If Mazi is in a "better place," that 's good news. I'm sure most of us would like to see it happening in TC and the preseason.

Keep up the good work, Mazi. You have much to prove, and many Cowboys fans would like nothing better than to watch it.

Typical offseason hype. The guy was wretched last year. Nothing short of PEDs is going to make enough difference in his play to bring him up to a good DL in this league.

...like this was grabbing the bull by the horns. What bravery there, now.

Not surprising Schoonmaker’s name came up in a thread about Mazi. Both were epic disappointments. It was a swing and a miss with both at least as rookies.
I was only making a joke about the three people featured on the video thumbnail compared to who the video was about. I have no idea what to expect from Schoonmaker this year. Hopefully, either he or Luepke at fullback take a major step forward to give us a solid secondary threat among the TEs/FB to Ferguson. If we have someone who can effectively work the short middle and flats, it opens things up for the downfield game.

Schoonmaker is dealing with a hamstring or at least he was. Those can linger and reoccur. Last summer he was dealing with plantar fasciitis. I don’t have a lot of hope for Schoonmaker. Ferguson has clearly taken over the number one TE position. We’ll see if he can become a secondary threat but he didn’t show very good hands or the ability to get open last season. He’ll be used as a blocker. Unless he takes a major step forward as a receiver he won’t be seeing a second contract.

Not off to a good start, but we'll see where he goes from here. There was a reason he was a second-round pick, but injuries have derailed multiple second-rounders for us over the years.

The reason he was a second round pick is because Dalton Schultz left in free agency and the jury was still out on our young TEs. We needed to cover ourselves at the position. The Cowboys were reportedly very high on Sam Laporta and Dalton Kincaid, but both were off the board. Laporta had an amazing rookie year. We ended up picking what was left at the TE position and got burned at least after year one. What derailed the other second round TEs or at least was the primary reason they failed was having Jason Witten playing ahead of them.

At 337 pounds, if he can stay low, his strength might be enough even if he doesn't get off the ball quickly. I think that is one reason Michigan put him in the stance it did; it naturally kept him low so that he couldn't be rooted out easily by leverage. Quinn seemed to think that the stance was one of the reasons Mazi was slow off the snap, but Michigan may have used him that way because he was slow off the snap. The key for Mazi may just be how Zimmer uses him. If he just wants him to clog/take on blockers, he may be just fine in that role getting back to what he did at Michigan: Maintain a low center and use his strength and size to hold his ground.

Schoonmaker would have been a second-round pick no matter what. If Dallas had not taken him, another team would have. The Cowboys did miss on LaPorta, but that doesn't mean Schoonmaker was a reach. He went in the range he was expected to go. Jacksonville likely would have taken him over Strange at 61.

I think/hope we can correct some of this by making sure he understands what's expected of him. I mean are you asking him to clog the middle to free LBers, rush the QB or play the run? The bottom line is he's a first-round pick who should have a little more impact than what we have seen so far. Hopefully, Zimm can get him on the right track.
If he can’t and Quinn couldn’t then the writing is on the wall. I do think this scheme fits him better. I think Quinn thought they could make a pass rusher out of him because he is a freak athlete but that’s just not his game

I was referring to him being our second round pick. It appeared we were going to take the best TE available in the second round whoever it was even if they were better players at other positions available. I doubt he was the best player on the board in the second round when we picked.
