Don't bring logic into the conversation. Risen thinks he's a NFL talent guy. We get the best defensive player and a player of need last year and he still complained.

I complained because that was a terrible personnel decision. It was the least bang for your buck that you could have gotten with your 1st and 2nd round picks.

If you draft a defensive tackle with a high pick, the dline is suddenly solidified with a nice balance of youth an experience.

Who's the young DE? Are you counting Crawford there?

was a necessary move.

you don't lose spencer for nothing.

you tag him and then either move him or extend him.
too talented to simply give away.

With the franchise tag, the Cowboys still have a lot of scenerios still on the table with what they can do with Spencer for the long haul, but letting a double digit pass rusher in his prime just walk away with getting nothing in return is astoundingly and mind-numbingly illogical. You don't just let highly valuable assets walk away for nothing.

Well said!! I couldn't agree more!

Alot of people said this exact same thing about Doug Free. And that we 'had' to keep him because we had no one else on the roster.

This year, Spencer could play all season under the tag, but the Cowboys could also sign him to a long-term contract, which would obviously lower his cap charge for this season.

Evidently just because he was tagged does not prevent the 2 sides from continuing talks for a long term contract. Cowboys evidently want him here and with time running out by placing a tag on him the Cowboys bought themselves more time.

Yes, although I view him as a flex type player. The point is, a line of Ware, Spencer, Rat, Hatcher, Liss, Crawford, Wilbur, and a first or second round DT strikes a nice balance of young and old. In such a scenario, our line would be solidified for around 4 to 5 years, and we can replace pieces in that span as needed.

So we franchised a player who will be 30 next season and only had one 10 sack season in his career. Not understanding the organizations thinking on this one. The money should go to that guard from the Bills. Once again, providing Romo with talented linemen is the key.
because there is actually a bit more to playing football than just one stat

I would only tag him to buy time to work out a new deal or to trade him. If the market isn't there they can always pull the tag. I don't think I would pay him $11m for one year, maybe a 5/42m. He gets 23m over the first 2 years and cutting him or restructuring after 3 or 4 wouldn't be too painful.

10m sb
2013 4m salary 6m cap hit
2014 5m salary 4m roster bonus 8 cap hit
2015 6m salary 9 cap hit
2016 6m salary 9 cap hit
2017 7m salary 10 cap hit

As I said, giving up a 2nd to move 8 spots to secure the best defensive player on most boards and a huge player of need was a good move. Hard to complain about Mo Claiborne. Team him with Carr, and barring injury, our starting corners are set for the next 4-5 years. I do agree with you that we need to go heavy OL and DL in the 2013 draft. However, I wouldn't be shocked to see Dallas' go safety in round 1 if both guards are gone.

Sign him long term or trade him for a high pick. Cap hit way too high for the tag no matter what position

YES!

(waits for the doom and gloomers to tell us this is a mistake and how poor of a GM Jerry is...)

I for one think it's a shrewd move in that nobody the Cowboys have drafted can take his place, and the move to 4-3 is going to require some personnel that are somewhat familiar with the scheme. Spencer was a 4-3 end in college. Play him or trade him, he's too good an asset to let walk away.

Well this tells me we are going full blown Tampa-2, forget about that Seattle D rumor. We're sacrificing size for speed up front, and that will hopefully create some TFLs, but it also means we better be damn good tacklers in the secondary because this scheme is about getting upfield with the D-Line and by nature it opens up wider running lanes.

Think the Colts D-Line under Tony Dungy.

No there is not.

Run stopping is irrelevant.

This is why late career Kevin Greene is the best player EVER.

While rushing the passer is very important I think it is a bit exaggerated to say run stopping for a down lineman is irrelevant.

I'm being sarcastic. Spencer has been an outstanding run stopper. Best on the team and one of the better in the league.
