Mixed feelings indeed. Don't know how to feel about this tbh.
Well after reading a lot of these posts, it looks like I am in minority here. I would like to see him signed to a long term deal. I think he could be an excellent DE in the 4-3 and having him anchor the other side of that line really opens thing up for us.
Having Spencer as the other OLB was good, but it never quite lived up to the monstrous expectations we all had. The reasons were two fold in that:
1) Spencer had to go back in coverage an awful lot and
2) Due in part to our awful secondary (minus last year) he was a second too late in getting to the QB. Spencer was quoted as saying that his improvement last year in sacks and pressures could be attributed to the improved coverage of our CBs giving him "that extra second"
With Spencer at DE, we he no longer needs to take the time to decide what to do in dropping back or rushing forward...he'll just go forward. We could very well get what we've been waiting for with 2 dominant DE's in Ware and Spencer.
Yes I do know that this may be overly optimistic, and I'm not 100% sold on this. There's a risk it doesn't pan out and we are hampered with this high dollar contract.
But add the fact that JJ has said he'll have to take a hometown discount to get a long-term deal and the fact that Woy has said SPencer would prefer to stay in Dallas, it looks like we will get a deal that is under his market value.
If it's long term, it will be for less than he'd get from another team. NOw it's just a matter of closing the gap between JJ low ball $$ and how much less Spencer is willing to take.
