I don't trust him, but Spencer was clearly the best player on the defense last year.

Mixed feelings.

And they are justified considering Spencer's pattern over his career.

Now I get a little more concerned about who is playing next to him at LDT and behind him at strongside linebacker.

I get that Church will be in the box more as run support, but the idea that he is somewhat undersized (for now) at strongside end, means the players bracketing him have to be able to hold their own.

Now we understand why Stephen said that FA will be tight this year and they wouldn't be on a shopping spree like last year.

I understood that before he said it. Because he mismanaged the cap so badly that we have to scramble on restructures before the new league year begins.

Spencer, Ratliff, Hatcher and Ware when their first responsibility is to rush the passer.... Sounds good to me.

Mixed feelings indeed. Don't know how to feel about this tbh.

Well after reading a lot of these posts, it looks like I am in minority here. I would like to see him signed to a long term deal. I think he could be an excellent DE in the 4-3 and having him anchor the other side of that line really opens thing up for us.

Having Spencer as the other OLB was good, but it never quite lived up to the monstrous expectations we all had. The reasons were two fold in that:

1) Spencer had to go back in coverage an awful lot and

2) Due in part to our awful secondary (minus last year) he was a second too late in getting to the QB. Spencer was quoted as saying that his improvement last year in sacks and pressures could be attributed to the improved coverage of our CBs giving him "that extra second"

With Spencer at DE, we he no longer needs to take the time to decide what to do in dropping back or rushing forward...he'll just go forward. We could very well get what we've been waiting for with 2 dominant DE's in Ware and Spencer.

Yes I do know that this may be overly optimistic, and I'm not 100% sold on this. There's a risk it doesn't pan out and we are hampered with this high dollar contract.

But add the fact that JJ has said he'll have to take a hometown discount to get a long-term deal and the fact that Woy has said SPencer would prefer to stay in Dallas, it looks like we will get a deal that is under his market value.

If it's long term, it will be for less than he'd get from another team. NOw it's just a matter of closing the gap between JJ low ball $$ and how much less Spencer is willing to take.

If they sign Romo and Spencer to longterm deals, there's suddenly money for free agents.

With the franchise tag, the Cowboys still have a lot of scenerios still on the table with what they can do with Spencer for the long haul, but letting a double digit pass rusher in his prime just walk away with getting nothing in return is astoundingly and mind-numbingly illogical. You don't just let highly valuable assets walk away for nothing.

Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding !!!!!!

Folks, we have a winner !!!!!

come on, no it doesn't...

I'm surprised no one has suggested to trade Romo for a top notch safety. Any top notch safety.

I wouldn't mind him doing that tbh. I like the Vaccaro kid and plus I dont think Womack and Cooper make it to 18.

I hope they grab the best player there honestly. If it is a Safety, then it is beyond me why anyone would have a problem with it. When is the last time they had a Safety that was consistently considered an upper level pass defender in the league?

Plenty of holes to fill.

I don't doubt there would be. For a free agent or two. But in doing so, you've further damaged our cap future.

Player for player drafts don't happen in the NFL, if you're paying attention.

Plus, you don't trade franchise QBs for safeties.

Same here, I would love a top notch safety. it is a very big need here.

I'm not for it or against it. Part of me says go all in because this is as close as well be for the next 17 years.

If you draft a defensive tackle with a high pick, the dline is suddenly solidified with a nice balance of youth an experience.

I know you read this site. There are enough people here who think we should trade Romo for Janikowski.

But you've still got a couple of younger pieces in Lissemore and Crawford and you can continue to add pieces through the draft.

Don't bring logic into the conversation. Risen thinks he's a NFL talent guy. We get the best defensive player and a player of need last year and he still complained.
