When we hired Garrett he was being recruited for head coaching job with the dolphins and the ravens too if i remember correctly. Point being the NFL respects the guy even if message board posters don't

The point is that the NFL did respect him, at one point in time. Since then, the facts have born themselves out and he's established himself as a .500 coach. The book is out on him and he'll never see another head coaching job outside the Jones family.

I gave up on Garrett a looooong time ago.

It's all about Romo. Without him we are nothing and we will never give him a game day advantage from a X's and O's perspective.

Luckily we've built an O-line that can impose it's will and take out our bland coaching.

He doesn't win on the field, why should he win in this thread?
No coach does everything right. No coach does everything wrong. Who is going to be the negative Nancy that actually gives Garrett some credit for something?

I think it's a good idea for Garrett to assert himself and rip the team for unsatisfactory performance. Up to a point, it's OK to be patient but the time comes when being "Mr. Nice Guy" doesn't always get the point across. Maybe he's beginning to feel the pressure to glean results from a team that has unfortunately fallen short of "being all it can be" in the past. Maybe a somewhat improved decision-making process in the FO could stand to be accompanied by more assertive disciplinary actions to be forthcoming from the organization as it proceeds into the future. Maybe a little fear is good.

No coach does everything right. No coach does everything wrong.

Is that supposed to be reassuring? It does sound like an apt description of a .500 coach. Gets half right and half wrong and loses as much as he wins.

Who is going to be the negative Nancy that actually gives Garrett some credit for something?

By all means, sing his praises if you'd like. We're all entitled to our opinions.

I take reassurance that this should be a make or break year for him and we will be better for that either way. If he improves and succeeds, that's great for both him and the team, and by extension, us fans. If he fails, there are no more excuses for him, and it's clearly time to move on.

Either way, I think that the organization will be in a better place than they have been recently.

but but but the posters here tell me Garrett is a pushover and players don't respect him. so who am i to believe? the all-knowing posters on here (who actually know literally nothing other than what they gather from watching JG on the sidelines) or actual professional football players that all seem to like the guy?

it's such a dilemma!

Garrett is in a no win with some fans, If he cracks down on players they moan about it if he does not they moan about it. During the 2014 season as Dallas was winning those same fans gave all credit to Linehan yet in 2015 it was all Garrett once again. Myself I expect him to get this team playing as they did in 2014 with a strong balanced attack and a defense that was opportunistic in creating turnovers. If Garrett fails it should cost him his job but the hypocritical nature of some around here is a joke, win or lose Garrett will continue to be discredited by them.

I don't know about excuses. He's made his share of mistakes, and he's been involved with some bad decisions. But as problems go on this team, the coaching staff is very far down on the list. I'm always surprised fans don't see that more clearly.
Idgit, how can you say coaching is far down on the list of problems? Week in/out we see several coaching blunders, whether its calling timeouts at bad times/clock management, players not being situationally aware, players not being developed (players who fail here who end up being decent players on other teams), and not adjusting our schemes/playcalling to suit the talent.

Yes, we all know that Jerry has created an environment here that makes it hard for coaches to succeed, but Garrett is a major reason why we are/have been a mediocre team.

I do like Alfred Morris. I hope things work out for him here.

Yeah, me too.

Dude has a great attitude and I think he totally gets his role and has no issues with that.

Plus I think he can play football.............

Not surprising the new guys are impressed. I remember the clips from "Hard Knocks" way back when Garrett was in the meeting room asserting "no excuses" etc. and sounded real tough then. He's not dumb - he knows the lingo and what leadership/hard ***/ etc. looks like. He's just not that guy to make it happen. Best I can tell, he doesn't think on his feet well, especially on game day. He's also real good at not taking the blame either.

Let's look back at 2014 when we went 12-4, we did that with a GM that no other team would hire unless it's in marketing and with a HC that is ranked in the middle or lower half in the NFL. Now how impressive was 2014? Very.

Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then. He's had plenty of chances and it seems that we have become better (in some cases) only when JG is further taken out of his coaching role. Ultimately I truly think the main problem is not necessarily JG but those above him holding this team back. Unfortunately that will not change for a long time. That said, if I had to pick a coach of all 30 teams to win a playoff game, JG would not make the top 25 in my list.

see that is my problem with garrett. sure the team played hard but really garrett gave the team no chance to win. he could have changed the playbook and play to the teams strengths and run behind the online more and adjusted the passing game to fit the qbs we had last year. a better coach would have won atleast three games without romo. the defense played well in some of the losses but the offense was beyond sorry. I am sorry if some of you guys like garrett I think the guy is a joke.

I understand this. I will say this, if Jerry is calling the shots again, then Garrett is never going to get fired because Jerry will call them wrong but he will also understand that it was his call so it is his fault. However, if Garrett is calling them, then even if Tony gets injured again, then he should be fired. Everybody and their dog knows that Tony is at that point. Some may not want to admit it for whatever reason, but everybody knows it. If you made the call not to bring in an effective backup or make a move to get a top Rookie, then that's on you and Garrett should be gone for that.

Problem is, we'll never know so we are probably stuck with it.

Yes, we all know that Jerry has created an environment here that makes it hard for coaches to succeed, but Garrett is a major reason why we are/have been a mediocre team.

My short answer to this is I'd say the vast majority of the "blunders" discussed here week in and week out during the season aren't actually blunders but are fans second guessing tough decisions that didn't work. There are definitely examples of bad management, but those are overblown too, and for the most part were things that happened earlier in Garrett's tenure.

I'm not sure which players have left Dallas and gone on to play better elsewhere, unless you're talking about Weeden, and that debate boiled down to nothing more than his team winning some games against bad teams when he happened to be quarterbacking and not Brandon Weeden actually playing any better.

For sure, there are a lot of criticisms leveled at Garrett. But that's because of the losses and not necessarily because of the coaching. I will say he's a pretty average game day coach (better now that he's got better coordinators). It's what he does the rest of the year where I think he earns his keep. He's a good coach in a high profile job in a market where building a winning culture and a winning roster is an extra difficult challenge.
