ST: Report says Tony Romo may prefer release in off-season rather than a trade

The defense allows for a game manager to be behind the center. Romo is a notch over that as he can make plays down the field. I'll take 247 TDs and a QB RTG of 97.4 over 154/88.
He's a little bit more than a game manager and with Romo's injury history and age they would be stupid to take a risk. He has as many playoff wins as Tony has.

Makes sense to me that he would prefer to be released and I can see Jerry giving him the respect to grant those wishes as long as he agrees to stay out of the NFC East. (The last part i added because those are my selfish feelings about it lol)
First off, what NFCE team would need him? I honestly couldn't care less if he did stay in the east.

So Romo has given up competing for the starting job next season. Sheez. Really Romo, finally you have competition at qb and you won't fight for the job.

Exactly. If I'm not mistaken, we get a larger cap relief if he's released, rather than traded. So unless we can get a high draft pick for him, which I doubt, it's arguably better for the team to release him.

Releasing and trading have the same result regarding the salary cap.

The exception is if a player is designated as a June release, then the dead money cap hit occurs over two seasons instead of just the current year.

Dallas could opt to use the June designation if Tony Romo is released, but it isn't necessary to do so.

I'd like to keep Romo, preferably at a reduced base salary, but he's going to want to play and that may not be an option with the Cowboys.

What do some of you actually think Dallas would get for him? I think some of your expectations might be high here.
The Eagles got a 1st for Sam Bradford so anything is possible. Yes, Romo is older but he is a much better QB than Bradford and Bradford was not that much better of an injury risk considering his injury history.

GMs sometimes need to win immediately to keep their jobs. They often make decisions to improve short term at the expense of the team's long term outlook because the won't be there long term if they don't win short term.

I would be happy with a 2nd round pick but if a couple of team get into the bidding I think a 1st is possible; although a team might want to make it a conditional 1st based on him staying healthy.

I want some milk.....but I'm too lazy to go get it.

Tony wants what, is he going to the store for my milk. Noone cares about my milk, with Tony's contract, noone should care what he wants.

Worst analogy I have ever heard in my life. I dont even understand what you are trying to say....

Tony has a lot of say. He has veto power and can make this very hard for the Cowboys if he chooses

So Sam freaking Bradford is worth a first rounder and Jerry won't put Romo on the trade block as a courtesy?

Please.

It is no wonder this franchise hasn't been to a super bowl in 21 years.

Age has something to do with it

He hasn't played in two seasons to speak of. A first is out of the question in my opinion. A second would be to a desperate team. Not every GM
trying to save their job puts it in bigger jeopardy. It's going to be interesting for sure. But I still don't think he's going to be on any ones radar for high picks. Our fan base would lose it if the roles were reversed.

This
Unfortunately expecting anyone in the organization to make a decision based on football and not pursestrings or heart strings is unreasonable

Ummm. I love Tony. I really do. But uh... he's an asset. And I'd prefer to get something back for him rather than lose him for nothing.

Unless a straight release helps give us better salary cap relief. I don't know about that part of it. If it helps in that area and it's good for both parties, then okay cool.
I agree, Romo is an asset and Dallas could and should get something in return for him. This is a business, and Dallas needs all the picks they can get.

Today. And June 2017.

Something will happen between today and June 2017. Something won't happen between today and June 2017. Either way, I believe we will all look back on threads like these and either laugh or complain.

Hopefully because some team went nuts and gave up a 1st. lol
