ST: Report says Tony Romo may prefer release in off-season rather than a trade

The Eagles got a 1st for Sam Bradford so anything is possible. Yes, Romo is older but he is a much better QB than Bradford and Bradford was not that much better of an injury risk considering his injury history.

GMs sometimes need to win immediately to keep their jobs. They often make decisions to improve short term at the expense of the team's long term outlook because the won't be there long term if they don't win short term.

I would be happy with a 2nd round pick but if a couple of team get into the bidding I think a 1st is possible; although a team might want to make it a conditional 1st based on him staying healthy.

I guess that was why Tony was kissing up to the boss going to his grandson's game yesterday

If Jerry releases Romo he is a fool.......he is tearing up a first round pick for nothing and making another NFL that much stronger......all for a false sense of nostalgia

Ich verstehe nicht

Je ne comprends pas

Its a metaphor. Symbolic of a person who believes something of little value is actually worth much more than would be considered within the boundaries of reason.

Also. 200 dollar bills do not exist. So there is that aspect in there as well.

Anyway. The bottom line is people that believe the Cowboys could get a first or second round pick for a late 30s QB that can't stay on the field and has not played in 2 years are delusional in my estimation. Delusional in a good way, to be sure. I like having hope as much as the next person.

But in this case, its simply a bridge too far for me.

Makes sense to me that he would prefer to be released and I can see Jerry giving him the respect to grant those wishes as long as he agrees to stay out of the NFC East. (The last part i added because those are my selfish feelings about it lol)

I don't think any team in the NFC East would be interested in Romo's services. I think you can make an argument that Kirk Cousins is now better than him. Plus Cousins is younger and teams tend to go with the younger guy when ability is very close.

The Eagles are building for the future with Wentz and the Giants have Eli.

This article is all speculation. There is no substance to this.

Just curious do you really think Romo would lose a QB battle to Dak? I'd bet my 2 house my boat and my investment portfolio that says Romo wins in a landslide and it won't be close.
He'd probably lose ot by getting hurt again. His injury rate as of now is far to alarming to expect him to stay healthy

Again, my comment was based on the statement made in the article about Romo going to Washington. I don't think he will! One I don't think Jerry would trade him to any team in the NFC East and two, if released, I don't think Romo would go to any team in this division. I think there are a few other scenarios that he would be better suited for, if it came to this.

I was just addressing this statement in the article

The biggest risk for the Cowboys is that Romo will land in Washington.

Tony needs to give Jerry a list of 3 AFC teams, and then shut up. Whichever of those teams ponies up the most gets him in a trade. I'm sorry, but you don't release Romo and let him sign with an NFC competitor.

That was my thought originally; however, after spending a lot of time considering it and thinking about some things teams have done in the past, I now think it's possible.

I'm not counting on it by any means, but it's definitely possible.

The Cowboys need to put themselves in a position where it is possible but not try to force it. They should just move forward as if Romo is definitely going to be on the team in 2017.

First of all Jerry is never going to do that because he doesn't have too.

There's no way we are going to get a first round pick for Tony. Maybe at 33 but not at 36 going on 37. Becasue of that Romo doesn't have to worry about a team giving up a lot for him because it's just not going to happen.

Second, he doesn't have to release him in order to take care of him. Jerry is going to sit down and ask him where he'd like to go and cut a deal from there. He's never going to send him to the Browns, he wouldn't do that to him.

Keep your eye on this--

There are some rumors in western NY that the Bills are interested in Linehan and they could package Romo with him. They've got a lot of talent on that team but they've missed on two consecutive QB's. EJ Manual and Tyrod Taylor. Romo could really help them transition to the next one.

Teams aren't going to give more than a 4th for Romo. I'd rather forget about the 4th, and release him after June when his cap hit can be spread into two years.

To my thinking, if Jerry were to allow his affection for Tony to interfere with his GM duty to get just compensation for him, it'd be a big mistake.

OTOH, if the money that could be saved by cutting him exceeds the benefits that we'd get from a trade, then cutting him would be preferable.

He's a little bit more than a game manager and with Romo's injury history and age they would be stupid to take a risk. He has as many playoff wins as Tony has.

So playoff wins are just on the QB? You think Romo gets more playoff wins with the defenses Smith has had?

Interesting prospective.

Made me think of one thing, put Romo on the Chiefs this year. Yeah we would lose.

Ha,we're gonna lose whenever we play whatever team that cat is quarterbacking for,SHEESE! like he couldn't dismantle our defense in high order(i.e.explode/blow-up)

Sorry but you're wrong. If Dak doesn't bounce back tonight and get a W, you could very well see Romo back in for the stretch run. They aren't going to let a struggling rookie torpedo the season with Romo on the bench even if it is that rookie that got them here. If Romo somehow get the job back and performs well, there's a good chance Jones will insist he continues on as the starter next year. Dumping Romo for next season only save a little cap room. Dumping him the following year is the big payoff. Jones may decide to give Romo one more full season to make a run at it knowing he has Dak if Romo gets hurt.
I'm completely for this scenario if it played out this way, 1. Romo gets a chance to make a run for the superbowl completely healthy; 2. Dak will get a chance to learn his position; 3. It'll shut everyone up as to how and who should be the qb here, because if Romo wins it all he is it until he decides to go, if he loses in the playoffs everyone will have to shut up about how much better he is and just deal with Dak's growing pains. 4. If he loses I'm sure everyone will have a thousand excuses for him also but no one will care.

If that is what Tony wants, then I would have preferred that we didn't give him such a large contract that totally handicapped this franchise from improving our defense the last few years. Jerry and the Cowboys have made Tony a wealthy man, nothing wrong with trying to get some value back from him, imo. If he had got us to a super bowl I would feel more like letting him have his way in this....but 2 lone playoff wins in 10 seasons tell me that he owes us, we don't owe him.
That contract did nothing to handicap the team. They've just been frugal because they want to.
