I agree with you, but the word on the curb is that
Steve Wilks wasn't popular with the players he coached. His personality is far different from the previous DC's
Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans who both went on to become Head Coaches {
NY Jets & Houston Texans} respectively. Wilks is not an emotionally intense guy; He has a conservative and laid-back persona, which is off-putting to the "Bang Bang Niner Gang" attitude that is firmly imbedded in the 49ers locker-room. Saleh and Ryans were
Fiery, Intense, Demonstrative and Passionate getting in the face of the players to challenge them in an intensely effective way. I have a feeling that Shanahan was forced into this decision, but I'm quite sure Wilks will do just fine at his next stop.
