Only nobody said Phil Costa would be a great Center. The argument was that he's capable of giving you starters' snaps at a position of need when we had more important places to be resources. And that was right.

.

After the 2012 Baltimore game there were plenty of people on here who saw a mirage.

Then after doing that deciding to switch to a zone based defense that neither of your CBs are suited to play.................HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Its hard to even make this stuff up.

Supposedly they want to run their secondary like Seattle's, their guys aren't suited for zone either. Injuries I think derailed that plan.

The biggest reason why our OL greatly improved in 2013 was replacing that stiff with a legitimate talent. It had a huge impact on the team that stockpiling high priced cornerbacks will never have.

Apparently it was since a lot of people, including yourself, got it wrong.

Ware was breaking down physically, Ratliff wasn't a productive player in years, Spencer was coming off a major injury. There wasn't a quality proven player under the age of 29 on the entire DL roster. This didn't take a GM of the ages to see it. It just required something more than an oil man and his son.

Well, go figure. You're telling me your crystal ball said Ware would get less than 10 sacks, be run on, and generally disappear, huh?? Or that Ratliff wouldn't just miss some games and have some lingering injuries (which much of the league does every year) instead of packing it in and quitting?? Or that you knew Bass and Crawford would go down??

Everyone with a reasonable amount of intelligence thought they'd try to get one DL and it was needed. The fact they didn't doesn't necessarily mean they deliberately just ignored the problem. How wonderful it must be to be so much smarter than everyone else including the professionals on the team!

Perhaps they took an educated gamble on Bass, Crawford, Spencer and Ware as well as needing to spend resources elsewhere. People do that and they look silly when the world turns upside down. And they look genius when the right card comes on the turn or river. The problem is not that they gambled whether huge or smaller but in the fact they are constantly having to make those awkward choices because they cannot climb out of the hole they have put themselves in.

If you talked about that instead of climbing on the roof and crowing every time a thread comes up (multiple times each thread) then perhaps you would be taken more seriously. Or making it look like you are always the vanguard and weather bell who constantly gets it right and the rest of us poor schmucks just can't see what your all seeing eyes can. Hmmmm?

Alot of us thought the DL was aging. declining, injury prone, and not addressing it was foolish. Problem was the OL was an even bigger dumpster fire.

And most of us could see that. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that Ware was having an issue with his neck that reduced his abilities. Or that Ratliff was missing a lot of snaps or having to play hurt because we didn't have the depth behind him. And we can count birthdays. Yada.

Most of us following the team and game can see what everyone else does. It's not the first time we've been in this situation either and in fact many teams have the same problem. In fact the greatest problem for most teams is not their core players and stars but the depth of the entire roster. Players and bigger, faster, and denser than every and injuries are being complied at an alarming rate. Add in the fact you have to sit a lot of these injuries now instead of playing thru them and you must have depth. Otherwise you have to be extremely lucky to be one or two standard deviations better than many teams in the injury department.

The problem is we have had an overall talent shortage for most of the last two decades. And THAT is the fault of the FO. That and just the way the league operates and the players making business decisions that frankly you can't criticize but so much.

If you don't draft well and make good cap decisions you end up 8-8 if you're lucky. Jerry knows this as does everyone else. He just doesn't have the abilities to keep himself above water.

If you really think they started Costa because they thought he'd be a star and hold that position down for a decade then you're wrong. They started him because he was the best available C on the team considering having to play others at the positions they started for the same reason. And that's the way it should always be. Drafting Fred in what many said was a bad play shows you what they thought of Costa. And they kept him around because he was the best backup available looking at all the players along the line and where they need to be. As it should be.

The problem wasn't starting Costa. The problem was having to start Costa.

You need to make this your sig. The drafts of 06-09 coming home to roost.

whoever made the decision that Costa could start for us should have been run out of town tar and feathered. There were other players available- the decision to choose him is what was unforgivable- because as horrible as he started out that should have been obvious.

Maybe I should. There are some here who feel they have a monopoly of 'THE TRUTH'. Look I'm opinionated. That's just one fault I have. And I often think I have it nailed. But I do know I'm not always right even when I'm absolutely certain I am. And there are many ways to look at the same issue. But I do have the ability to understand that most people esp professionals in their area of expertise are generally competent.

Jerry is not incompetent; at least not anymore. He's just wants to win so bad now he doesn't plan well for tomorrow. His judgment is improving although I'd say he's a slow learner. And he just refuses to let others play with his toy; at least he doesn't appear to play well with others. He doesn't just want to be in the middle of everything although he sure does seem to enjoy it and can't help....well talking to much to put it nicely. He just won't let anyone drive his Ferrari.

Ok. Who were these other players available? And keep in mind they had to use some at other positions which were about as bad or worse than the center position.

And what makes you think Jerry is going to let anyone run him out of town. When he goes under he'll still be in Dallas. Via his family and that empire as well as literally. Heck, if I were him I'd be buried under the star at midfield.

Gosh darn it.Sounds like you are tired of being wrong and you blame Risen for it. You should feel lucky to be on a board that has a poster willing to educate you.

Martin was a tackle, was he not? Not a guard. I mean, why is he attacking the offensive line specifically? We've had tons of busts. Bobby Carpenter, Mike Jenkins, Jason Williams, James Marten, Bennett, Fasano....

The list goes on and on.

Marten started 25 games at BC at left guard before moving to OT.
The thought was he was an OG at least.
The fact he was not even a back up swing player is a true indictment on information gathering.

Brewster was much the same. Tweener type guy who was thought to be at least an OG.

Neither guy really wanted to play pro football though.

I'm kicking myself for just not seeing this amazing piece of brilliant Freudian deduction or is it literature....bad fiction at that.

Look it's Laurel and Hardy. Next it'll be The Three Stooges. Oh where oh where are you Curley?!

we could have kept Gurode for one-but he was expensive. Now having a better OL would have been worth something-question is how much more. Now there were a couple others that time has shown would have been better then Costa so he was NOT the only option.

Except he isn't really wrong.

Dallas was pretty bad on the DL last year but that was compounded by YOUNG guys missing the season and expected stars playing far below expectations.
Dallas FRANCHISED Spencer. He was expected to be just a bit better than any George Selvie.
Crawford was our young high draft pick who had gained valuable rookie experience.
Bass was in a long line of young late round or UDFA DL this team has developed the last 10 years. --guys that STILL dot rosters.
Hatcher was a revelation in the 4-3 and went in as the expected 4th best DL who was struggling to hold off Ben Bass.

Dallas has not struggled to add or develop DL talent AT ALL.
They have never had terrible talent for years on the DL like they did the OL.
Last year was about playing guys who they didn't have on the roster.
Every NFL team sucks when they have to play street free agents.

Keeping Ratliff, Spencer, Ware was always going to happen entering 2013.

Anyone who wants to suggest they wouldn't take a moderately healthy DL of:
SDE: Spencer, Crawford
3T: Hatcher, Bass
1T: Ratliff, Hayden
WDE: Ware, Selvie

is completely full of compost.

NFL teams just paid 65 MILLION dollars for two members of our 2013 DL.
Show me someone values our other players like that??

We actually got a draft pick for Lissemore out of camp.
Anyone else we trade for a draft pick???

DL is our top priority right now but we any NFL team that lost guys worth that much in free agency would have an immediate need as well.
Seattle is talking to DL because they've now lost a couple DL off a DL that went 8-9 deep.

In all seriousness, I used to wonder what type of mindset that it takes to defend this mess. I thought only a Jones could be wrong on football issues so much of the time. You clearly prove that is wrong unless your last name is Jones.

It was dumb to go into the season depending on players that stayed injured and was over the hill. If Bass and Crawford would have stayed healthy, there is a good chance that they would have proven to be nothing more than jags. There were plenty of people that figured the train wreck was coming, even some mediots.

No, my crystal ball said the DL was aging and in rapid decline with no quality depth to replace the starters. It said the time to act was now. I can't help it if you didn't realize this and that you seem a little upset by it. It didn't take a fortune teller to see that writing on the wall.

Thanks for filling me in.

They started Costa because this team is one of the worst run in the entire league. They lack talent evaluators at the top, so a stiff like Costa can sneak his way into the starting lineup. He can even get encouraging quotes about his future from the GM, since the GM has no idea what he's doing or what a good player looks like.

Once we got him off the field and replaced him with a legitimate NFL center the line improved immensely. The guy can't play. It's really that simple.
