I don't know, V
Houston made the playoffs with what they have coming back and Denver has to assume the young guys they have will be better for a team that was already 9-7.
Minnesota lost their starter right before the season, so probably felt they had zero chance of the playoffs without making some sort of desperate move.
I probably didn't do a good job of making my prior point because I am on and offline all day at work. I will try to do a better job of explaining my thought process.
First off I acknowledge your line of thinking and will say that it is a reasonable thought process. I understand how a reasonable person could argue that Minnesota was more behind the 8 ball because of the timing of Teddy's injury.
I don't really subscribe to that being all that important of a factor. I do agree that the Vikings went from having a QB they thought could get it done to not having one. But right now, arguably, both Houston and Denver are in that same boat.
Arguably both Denver and Houston are actually worse off than Minnesota because both of them actually probably have more dominant defenses than Minnesota and the opportunity afforded by both will close eventually. An example of this is Ware's likely departure from Denver and Denver lost a couple of significant role players last year too.
Both teams have an opportunity go get over the jump with Romo in a way that Minnesota was wishfully thinking it did. Both of them have a much stronger case to go all in on Romo in a way that Minnesota THOUGHT that they should.
It has worked before in Denver with Manning so they shouldn't be all that risk averse to signing Romo. Moreover Houston has never had a taste of the Super Bowl, so they are supremely motivated to get there. I personally know the fans are starving for a taste of it because I used to go to the games because my ex-girlfriend had season tickets.
Anyway that's my thinking on it. I know two reasonable people can look at the same facts and draw a different conclusion and both have valid points of view.
I know what my opinion on it is. I hope the Cowboys take the same view I do and if it turns out to be in error it hasn't really cost them anything. But if they give Romo away for some magic beans or cut him outright and there was a real market for him and everyone bluffed Jerry out of pocket aces then we have squandered a fantastic opportunity.
One more thing about those who believe that the cap space is worth releasing Romo by itself..... I think you guys are missing the boat. We are already constrained by the cap and have been for the better part of 20 plus years. We pissed off the benefit of cheap Romo labor early on. What makes any of you think that that alone is going to make a real difference, or said differently... more difference than having a QB as good as Romo is on the roster.
We have done a pretty good job of acquiring talent, but we have really been pretty poor at getting great value with our cap. I am sure we could put the extra cap space to good use by extending Dez and paying him even more per year. Sorry about the sarcasm of the prior sentence, but I just can't help myself sometimes. Ha ha ha.
