This team needs to start deferring

Provide data that this actually leads to an increased probability of winning the game and I'm all for it. If your defense is playing great they likely get a stop at the beginning of second half, no?

It's all about momentum and rythm.

And if you can keep the opposing orhythm. Off the field for 30 to 50 minutes because of a long drive to end the 1st half, the 15 minutes for halftime, and another long drive to start the 2nd half, you essentially give your defense a lot of rest and keep the opposing offense cold on the sidelines for so long.

Lol! What about having the wind at your back in the 4th quarter.....that doesn't come into play anymore?
I think that's one of the things a lot of the "DEFER!" people don't get. They don't usually choose because of superstition, or the false belief that they might carry momentum from the first half into the second half. If it's an outdoor venue, the sun, wind direction, precipitation, and temperature could all play a part in the decision, as well as hoping to silence or encourage the crowd from the start.

That said, when you look at the statistics, there really doesn't seem to be a significant advantage either way.

Not when you have a kicker who cant even make an extra point like Zeurlein
It's not just the kicker. It's easier to throw the ball with the wind then it is to throw it into the wind. It's probably also less distracting for the receivers to run with the wind at their backs than to run with it blowing in their faces.

That's not supportive data.

How does Mike McCarthy not see this.

The defense is playing at a much higher level right now compared to the offense.

Possibly getting points right before halftime and receiving the ball to start the 2nd half would be a greater advantage than setting the tone IF the offense scores first.

Get your act together McCarthy.
We are 10-4. Whatever you are complaining about doesn't seem to be hurting us. But please continue to be petty by pointing out something that isn't hurting us.

Just because we are winning doesn't mean there isn't any room for improvement.

But what if your defense is playing great?

If you can get a quick 3 and out, make them punt and start with good field position. Then get that early lead.

Then you get the ball to start the 2nd half
There’s nothing wrong with deferring either. Neither decision is wrong. Both are dependent on execution. I like the idea of scoring first and putting pressure on the defense. I also like the idea of relying on my defense and getting a stop. Neither is a bad approach.

If he says he took the ball to be able to manage the wind (which I still say didn't really exist and was in the building) then fine.

As a general rule we need to defer.

It does appear they are capable of not going for every 4th down or selling out to block every single punt when not necessary.....so there's hope.

I want the ball first in the second half. If you have a good Defense and get that 3 and out then there is a advantage.. Going into halftime with even a slight lead and coming out with a chance to take the game over with a 2 possession lead puts a team where we want them. In a passing situation. Pin those ears back. Now getting a run game back and being able to protect a lead and grind the time away..

Deferring a kick has no outcome in the game lol. The objective is to score first and hold the lead. The offense needs to get going. That ain't on McCarthy unless this offense will never get going then that's a issue in itself.
Trying to recall when this "deferring the initial possession" trend started - mid 90's?
Win the coin toss - receive the kick - "metriculate down the field" (Hank Stram) - score a TD first.

Well, the reason he’s been taking the ball is obvious. It’s a show of faith in an offense he and everyone in the world knows is struggling. It’s clearly not working but in the end, even though I hate hate hate taking the ball, it isn’t that big a deal.

My thoughts exactly!

Plus why would McCarthy choose to show lack of confidence in the same offense he said is “ not slumping”?

There was a game a few weeks back, I believe, where we deferred, so it likely just depends on the circumstances.

The old school thought is if you get the ball you can control the clock more. Its also a huge advantage if you score points early. But idk what the percentages are, I just think the likelihood of scoring on the first drive is tougher than getting a defensive stop the first drive.

Also having the ball coming out of half you can really gauge where your at, its a nice luxury to have.
