Trade a 3rd and Peerless for Charles Rogers..

You feel bad for him? He knew he had already failed 2 tests before testing positive for the 3rd now that tells me he is stupid. For heaven sake these guys know the score ahead of time they know what the consequences of their action are and some still do it? These are not little kids, these are gown men making more money than most of us will ever see in a life time and some choose to pull this ****. No he did it to himself and I feel no sorrow or pity for the idiot!

His test at the combine was also questionable. I don't think that test counts toward the NFL drug program, but is possible that he has 4 suspect/failed tests that landed him with a 4 game suspension.

he had to have been failing the tests while he wasnt playing though right? Going out with the same injury on something he cant really control has got to be a huge downer. not saying i excuse it, but I think its something he can overcome if he hasa real coach, a real qb and can be healthy.

As I said many people in the real world work at jobs that test and you are given 1 chance not 3 or 4. These guys are getting dream jobs paying millions of dollars and they can't figure out to stop before the 3rd failed test? Now either some of these guys are down right stupid or they don't give a damn and to tell you the truth neither do I. They can suspend these fools for life and it would not bother me 1 single bit this act has gotten old with me.

Millions, no excuse at all I don't care if he was bummed out or not. As far as I'm concerned the league should have stiffer rules instead of treating them like babies maybe then some would actually wake up and join the rest of us in the real world. Also I don't think the type of coach or QB you play with has anything to do with a guy taking drugs or not that is his choice so don't lay part of the blame on others it is all on Rogers! Unless it was Harrington or the coach holding him down forcing him to get high!

Trading anything for this guy means taking over his #2 overall pick contract. He WILL NOT have minimum salaries for the rest of that deal. Although it would be really easy to cut him (since the Lions are responsible for any signing bonus cap hit), his base salaries are gonna be too high in the coming years. And I would think he has some roster bonus and such coming up very soon.

Just wait for the guy to get cut and then go after him.
 
Sorry to end an interesting debate but the argument is moot: if a player is traded the salary cap hit is immediate. As of Sept. 1st the Lions were only 2m under the cap. The Rogers cap hit would no doubt exceed that #. Therefore Rogers is untradeable. He could be released and the cap hit would be for next year but not traded.

ya i agree. if we did trade there is absolutely no way he could keep the same contract. if not ya id rather just wait to see if he gets cut. any idea what the cap hit would be if traded?

As has been a trend throughout his career -- when AB has good games, his team tends to lose. His numbers were huge last year in blowouts. He's a garbage time WR

I think you are confused -- this means 3 failed drug tests. Not a lot of players (relative to how many are in the league) hit this stage of the drug program. Factor in that he's a high pick who has had his first two years be total washes -- the drug use gets stupider. Why use drugs if you know you are up for a 4-game sit when this is pretty much your last chance to show you aren't a huge bust?

What does all this point to? Rogers must be very very stupid.

You want to get a guy who, as far as I can recall, is the highest pick ever to get a drug suspension? When his next positive test puts him out for the year?
 
Ok -- last one -- Does anyone know if you can even trade a suspended player? I know other transactions are not allowed -- for example, you can't cut a suspended guy.
 
i dont think you can, but im sure there could be discussions and then do the trade when its over.

No that player is still the property of the team he is on and any conversation with him can lead to tampering. Only way would be if his team opened up talks about a trade

above poster said if the lions are the one to open up talks they can happen, so i guess that would be the only way. you gotta think with two young studs already, they are already thinking about trade possibilities, and may have contacted some teams.
 
Interesting discussion. I guess I have three basic thoughts here.

1. I do believe we need a young WR. Big, and fast with hands.

2. I concure with many that Rogers is one positive test away from being out a year. You can't say your looking to next year and not recognize that this idiot may end up on the shelf next year.

3. Rogers has talent but he is as much risk as reward. I don't believe a 5th is too much but much would have to happen contractually to make this work. Personally, I don't see it.

No Abersonc. For a timing offense, you don't need to have world class speed. Big and Fast helps stretch the field. Young helps the overall age in our WR corps.
