Probably more so scheme; what do you think?
I'd say 80% talent issue, 20% scheme/play call issue. Over the last decade we've had Jason Garrett, Scott Linehan, Bill Callahan, Kellen Moore, Brian Schottenheimer, and Mike McCarthy either OC or calling the plays. Seems like there is a scheme change (or tweak) every couple of years. At what point do we just admit this team needs to do a better job of acquiring talent in the free agent market? This offense really doesn't have a threatening weapon after Ceedee Lamb for you to truly scheme around. Your RB trio right now are all pretty one dimensional players. I'm a huge Jake Ferguson fan but hes not a TE who can run up the seam and stretch a defense, so hes pretty limited as an underneath guy. You have some decent WRs past Lamb but really lack a true #2. Your OL I think can get better, but their dont have a reliable T at either spot and a rookie C who has barely played the position. I think with this many holes on the roster you can bring in any scheme you want, but it wont make much difference.
Bringing in a guy like Kubiak may be a good move, but they better be able to go get an Alvin Kamara type to come with him. They have to clean up the defensive issues or it doesnt matter either way, but I have to believe that this offense would be twice as fun to watch if we had a dual threat RB who we could get creative with, or a true secondary receiving target to roll coverages away from Lamb on occasion. We simply have the same issue on both sides of the football where we cant run the ball consistently against basic fronts and we cant stop runs against 2 receiver sets due to having too many one dimensional players.
Scheme changes are fine, but they come and go and typically only cover up your roster flaws for maybe a year at most until other teams catch on to what you're doing. Its all on tape, so its not like the Cowboys cant figure out why the Shannahan tree keeps blowing them off the field, I just dont think they have the players to stop it.
