What has this franchise learned that makes us closer to a SB?

OK, I think you have the wrong mindset. as fans, we want superbowls. expectations are that the organization and the ownership have the same goal, thus "learning", "adjusting" and "moving forward". However, non of that applies since the goal of the Cowboys and the ownership is not to win championships, its to be more valuable and make more money while allowing the owner to enjoy his toy. Once you see that, once you understand that, then all the moves we make and have made, the past 20+ years make sense. The learn by adjusting on how to keep fans interested and make more money....we are a decent drafting team, who suck at FA and driven by the bottom line, increasing revenue, while cost is managed through salary cap. so "learn" that on an up cycle you can increase ticket prices, jersey prices and market them and cash in before the down cycle (inevitable).

Every move we make during the down years (cycle) is to find the one or two or three stars that will put the cowboys kind of back on the map and bring fans and their interests back. we were #1 team in home game attendance last year. instead of finding, signing and making the right moves in FA, we made money moves. and raised ticket prices by average of 18%....we have 3 of the top 20 jersey sales. cooper was no longer up high in Jersey sales, was making a lot of money and thus he is gone....he was not worth the investment any longer....they learned, they learned they can milk the fans in the up cycle, then ride the wave during the low cycle (and we know its coming) and find the one or two stars, maybe make a splash FA signing to bring interest back.

just look at the past 20+ years and you clearly see the cycle. we are on the up cycle, prices going up, jersey's selling like hot cakes and cash in while you can....in a couple of years, down cycle is coming. list of excuses. Jerry saying, he will not stand for this and the cowboys fans deserve better than this, blah blah blah.... its inevitable.

we are not winning the superbowl in Jerry's life time or Stephen's for that matter. it has to be a lottery win like luck for it to happen. I am not counting on it, neither do I see it happening with how things are done in Cowboys organization.

There is nothing for them to learn. Except how to get over their stubbornness. They already know what to do.
Thing is they don’t change to get it done. That is the stubborn FO.

As to confidence, it is not in the FO.
However, if they follow will MCClay bringing in players, and they do have some decent coaches, though need a few changes.
And they are getting better players, that is enough for me that they can repeat as division champs and go further in the playoffs.
Another year under the same staff and schemes will help more than many feel right now.

No matter who they bring in, it won’t matter; they will be misused or underutilized or put in bad schemes. Players come her to regress. When you have substandard coaching in your HC, OC, ST, and offensive line coach positions, and Jerry telling the coaches who to play, the team has no prayer. That’s why they always underperform relative to their talent. And the wheels on the bus go round and round….

I see that feeling here a lot, and I fully understand how folks can come to that conclusion. However, to me it doesn't compute;

1. The 3 SBs came with Jimmy or Jimmy's team. Jimmy got most of the credit for the first 2 and a lot for the 3rd. More than anything, Jerry wants a Super Bowl win with not one iota of Jimmy in it. Jerry can't stand that he doesn't get more credit for the 3 SB wins.
2. The Pats and the Steelers have 6 rings each. Cowboys only 5. Jerry wants to be first in everything, it has to gall him that he's "number 2".
3. As far as money and being on tv go, how better to bring in more money and more attention than to win another SB? Especially after this long, don't you know the Eagles reveled in their first championship in 60 years? And they at least appeared in some before that, though they lost. Can we even imagine Jerry's "bringing glory back to the Dallas Cowboys" story lines? Talk about attention! Jerry would be on every major and minor television network, even non-sports networks.
4. Yes Jerry knows he's not "got 'er done" as gm the last 26 years, but it doesn't matter. He thinks his way is best, results or not, surely it's just a matter of time before he "strikes it rich". He can't fathom it may not happen, can't see the trees for the forest, as it were.

I've had this discussion with several posters here, don't bother trying to debate me, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! Also no problem if others disagree, that's why we're on this site (supposedly) to "cuss (well not literally, that'll get you banned/blocked) and discuss" the Cowboys. But it's been beat to death, no need to go over it again....

As much as I do like Cee Dee and Gallup, neither are a true number 1 receiver. We need (what Nate Newton calls) a big greasy to play center. Tyler is too undersized.

I've heard many rag on our pass rushers. Yes, they're bad but not any worse then some of the other teams... I think we're ok on defense... We desperately need changes done to offense up to and including OC...

For Jerry to win, his stench would have to be removed form this organization starting from the core to the culture to the hoopla to all of this sideshow stuff he does.

He needs to go back to just being in the box, and coming on the field after the game is won.

I think you answered your own question. This is not like other ownership groups or even a normal sane person. His ego is too large to believe he can ever be wrong.
Remember he is quoted as saying.. " 500 coaches could take this team to a Super Bowl"... don't have the exact quote.. That was the sliding door moment in this franchises history.

it is about the money. its always been about the money. its about making dallas almost valuable franchise in any sport. ticket prices going up after a winning season and playoff appearance. jersey sales drive decisions. Jerry is not scared. he makes moves. wrong moves to take us to a championship, all the right moves to make money, make the franchise more valuable. I have always argued, Jerry is a master marketere, and because of that, his owner persona overrules his GM persona when it comes to decisions.

I'm with you there 100%.

But it's a such a faint hope I'm not even sure I'd call it hope, more wishful thinking, for two reasons:

1. Even when Jerry's gone, there's lately zero evidence that Stephen will do anything different. So we have the well known definition of insanity.
2. Detroit has NEVER even been to a SB, that's 54 years. Jets haven't been to a SB but once in the last 52 years. If the blind squirrel analogy had any merit one of those teams surely would have gotten there by now.

I will watch the games every year. If it happens, fantastic. If not, I've not invested my emotions enough for it to bum me out....

Honestly I never want to be compared to the Jets, Lions, Chargers, Jaguars, Bengals ( before this past year). Come on we are supposed to be Americas team.
Even the drought from the last SB appearance in the 70's to 92 was 14 years.. Think about that... We are going to double that timeline.
This is a a broken organization from top to bottom. In reality the NFL should take this team from Jerry, his tenure over this time frame has been detrimental to the team. The majority will disagree but the man has no redeeming quality from my perspective.
He was smart / lucky enough to hire Jimmy and that is the only good move he has made. His incentive/ will to win just is not there. We need a owner who is hungry for a title, someone who will bring glory back to this franchise.
Jerry loves to remember what he built, always looking backwards.. The glory days, the triplets. You cannot just recreate the past.
The league has become almost exponentially smarter the past few years. This team is just stuck in retrograde motion. The feeling where you are being left behind because you are standing still and everything is moving forwards. The team is just stuck in mediocrity, lucky that he got 3 during the prime Gen X years so that group is still die hards, but now even the majority of players in league think of Dallas as average and no memory of their winning tradition.
Gradually then suddenly phase. If you want to remain in the pantheon of teams , the Lakers, Yankees, Alabama, Celtics, Alabama, Duke, etc, etc, Cowboys you have to actually win.
There will be a point in the near future where this team will no longer be relevant. That time is a lot closer than you think.

I think you and I are talking around the issue. My point of saying it's not about the money was that money is not holding him from signing free agents. He has no desire to compete for SB. He has not won the offseason Super Bowl since 1995 when they signed Deion away from the Niners.

oh, I 100% agree. we have the money to sign, but some of it is driven from bottom line, ala Cooper trade for peanuts. that took 20M off the books. we have 25M plus on the cap available, yet refused to maybe perhaps slightly over pay for Wagner and Miller (could have had both and imagine that with Parsons in the mix), instead we resigned LVE and drafted a guy with a fused vertebrae in the 5th..... and that money not paid to those guys. that money not spent in FA goes straight to the bottom line profits. NFL franchise financial management is somewhat easy. main cost is controlled by the cap, revenue by ticket prices and jersey sales, etc. there is a reason we are the second most valuable franchise in US and one of the tops in the world.

Nothing. They seem to always be chasing. The realized they weren't tough enough so now they try to change that. Then what? Get beat by a team that has speed and a great passing game and then try to chase that? They haven't learned to let the head coach pick his own staff an example of having Moore just like Wade had Garrett ect. They still haven't learned that if you have a talented roster then you go for it. Oh and they still haven't learned to manipulate the cap like other teams do and continue to use it as an excuse. I was pleased to see them move on from all these over priced veterans like cooper and Collins. Was happy they didn’t do anything dumb with Gregory and overpay.

Glad they didn’t draft another WR till the 3td round.

They were also smart enough to draft oline and dline early and often.

there is a salary cap floor that every team must spend and Bengals had perfected that for years and were adding to the bottom line. Stephen does similar. money paid tomorrow is worth less than money paid today approach.
