What is everyone's thoughts on the iPhone 5?

I wouldn't want to go to a restraunt and have to give the waitress my phone so they could go scan it.

I guess the assumption is at a time when pay-by-phone becomes commonplace that you wouldn't have to surrender your phone.

I mean, they could bring you a receipt with a barcode on it and you scan the barcode with your phone, processing the transaction.

Or they could bring a little device over to your table.

A while back I got a email from a friend that had an article about phones in Japan that basically replaced the wallet. They had something built in to where they could act as a credit card and payments would be made by moving the phone into a proximity of a scanner and accepting the payment on the screen.

I was kind of hoping for that. I wouldn't mind having a phone that just replaced my wallet. Scan my ID and cards in and have one less thing in my pocket.

No, you won't be able to do that with iPhone5.

You can do it with several of the Androids, including the one I have Galaxy S3. More and more retailers are signing up for it and all the credit card companies, the major banks, Google and Ebay are working on versions of it. I think there are about 5 different ones out there right now although I believe the main ones are spreaheaded by Ebay and Google.

I think the idea is that eventually you can have your credit card info, online coupons and groupon type deals on it so it'll all be integrated. This whole thing is in its infancy right now but the idea is someday you may no longer need to carry any credit cards. You can even pay people cash now with your mobile phones with current technology.

We are definitely moving rapidly to a near cashless society.

I Ordered an iPhone 5 through the apple store app with no problem...was actually surprised with how smoothly it went compared to previous years.

Doh! I slept through my alarm (or turned it off in my sleep) and ended up not ordering until 3:00. Now says it won't ship until 2 weeks, as opposed to 9/21. They went through their first batch of stock in under an hour. Geez.

Ordered mine as soon as the store went back up, set my alarm because I got shafted last time and had to wait a month to get one. It says 9/21, hopefully they stick to that date... now I just gotta make plans to pick it up.

I usually get everything delivered to work because I don't have a doorman at my condo, but they wouldn't let me change the shipping address so chances are it'll end up stuck at UPS or wherever.

I'm impressed Apple's servers were prepared for this. The site was still snappy and responsive throughout the process. I had made sure to update all my card and address info beforehand though to make things easier.

couple of questions.

i've been using android for several years (with no complaints) but would like to give the iphone a try.

1. how much are they with a 2 year contract? (verizon)

2. is learning the ios going to be like starting over or will most of it kind of feel intuitive from my android experience?

3. will i be able to use my old android (incredible) as kind of a mini tablet without having service on it?

By the time it arrives they'll be working out the final few bugs on the iphone 6.

It seems if you didn't place an order within the first hour then you won't get it by the 21st. My order with AT&T through apple still days 9/21 delivery. Fingers crossed that doesn't change.
