What will it take for Dez to overtake Megatron?

You know, it takes more than size and straight line speed to be the best receiver in the game. Route running, body control, hands, strength, endurance, desire, etc. all come into play. To simply name Megatron the best because of these two characteristics is asinine. Otherwise, Plaxico Burress and Roy Williams would be considered two of the best to play the game. Are they on anybody's all time best list? Please. Are you actually going to support Moss's idiotic remarks that he is the best to ever play, ahead of Jerry Rice? Is Calvin Johnson bigger and faster in a straight line? Yes. But I believe Dez has him in most other categories and is the more dangerous receiver overall.

Agree. Dez is the best receiver in the game and will prove it. He has better body control, better hands, a better vertical (im talking raw jumping ability) is more athletic overall, just as fast and most importantly, he is much quicker in and out of his breaks as well as starting and stopping. I also dont even believe Calvin is any faster than dez on the field that would even be worth mentioning. Plus Dez has more swagger, is more of a competitor is more of a leader on the field, and plays with the intensity of Michael Irvin. Calvin is taller and gets all the passes thrown his way because the Lions have nothing else. Thats about it. Cowboys have so many weapons like Austin, Witten, and Murray. I also think Escobar and Terrance Williams will be good weapons as well for the Cowboys.

Calvin Johnson is in a league of his own and the way he is defended is why these stat comparisons don't matter. The guy is a beast. I'm more interested in seeing who #2 will be, for which Dez has a shot.

Good post.

It's okay to be the 2nd best WR in football, which is something I think Dez can lay claim to this year.

I think Dez has all of the tools. He's big, he's strong, he's physical, he's fast, and he is playing with a swagger that I haven't seen in him since he was dominating at OSU. Megatron is better than him right now but I believe Dez will close that gap between them starting this year.

What do you guys think Dez has to do to make his case as the best receiver in the game? To me, he can start by building on his 2nd half performance of last year. I'm excited about how dominant he is becoming.

A cool nickname! Every put their heads together we can do this!

To overtake Megatron, Dez would probably have to have an 1,800-yard, 20-touchdown season. Something like that.

He needs to be Romo's only target... Dez won't put up Calvin numbers with Miles and Witten around.

Yeah and we won't go 3-13 Like Det either. CJ is great I'm glad the Lion fans have a guy they can point to and cheer for but all his individual stats do not mean a thing in the bigger picture which is winning.

I agree. I'd rather Dez be the number #2 receiver and Dallas make a playoff run, let alone make the playoffs, than Dez put up Megatron numbers.

Whatever it takes to win. I think with a healthy Austin, Witten along with some of the younger guys like Harris, Beasley and Williams and with what is hopefully a much improved running game this offense will show diversity in their ability to put up points. I hope Dez has a great season and I think he will, I don't know if he will be the #1 ranked WR in the league but that means little when so much is riding on the line for this team.

The Lions did make the playoffs the previous year when CJ led the league in receiving....

Yards he lead receptions he was like 4th Welker had more catches. Last season CJ 1,964 was record setting total most in NFL history and while it is a great accomplishement the fact it did not change the outcome really means little. Yes it is great for CJ and his next contract but Lions sucked

I think Dez' peer group--assuming he keeps rolling like he did late last year--is extremely impressive.
I'd say that group includes, give or take a name or two, the following:
AJ Green, Julio Jones, Larry Fitzgerald (at this stage in his career), Demaryious Thomas (IF same assumptions applied to him as Dez). I would say Andre Johnson too, but I think he may have declined enough that he is not quite in that group anymore...not sure really.

Calvin is ahead of all of those guys.

1500 Yds 15 Td's > 2000 Yds 5 Td's

Yeah, thats great, Calvin got alot of yards, but didn't translate to alot of points.. How is it even possible to get 2000 yds and that amount of touchdowns?

Getting stopped before reaching the goal line. I recall Irvin had that happen a lot and Emmitt reaped the rewards. lol

love dez but its just not possible unless calvin suffers a serious injury. Calvin is much faster, taller, has just as good of hands if not better and to top it all off he is smart and has a great work ethic.

Dez Bryant could be your Jerry Rice. Not sayin he is, but he definately is capable of being better than Calvin Johnson.

Megatron usually scores alot. Last year was a freak year. He somehow got stopped inside the 2 yard line something like 6-7 times last year. That won't happen again.
Also, maybe Dez will see more of it this year, but Calvin was double or even triple teamed much of last year and the year before. They did not have a Witten or Miles Austin.

Anyway, I would never discount Dez. The sky is the limit for that man.

Easy. As I've been trying to convince people of (largely unsuccessfully), Calvin is NOT the red zone threat that Dez is because he doesn't have multiple dimensions to his game. His lack of lateral quickness really hurts him in the red zone so he does all his damage in the middle of the field which, as you can tell from the Lions win-loss record, doesn't mean jack. All people see is that 1,900+ yards he put up but don't realize it's largely smoke and mirrors. Give me Dez any day of the week.

Oh, and the question wasn't who was better last season or the season before. It's who is better NOW (i.e. who is going to have a better 2013 season). If you look at the data on both players, you can see that their trending lines are going to cross this year, with Dez surpassing Johnson in all important categories. It's not a matter of looking at what's already happened, you have to project what's going to happen. And some of you are utterly ignorant when it comes to data analysis, you have no clue. None. It's embarrassing, really. LOL.
