Why did we have to trade R. Switzer?

Yeah, if you mean TDs in 2017. Obviously, the whole passing game sucked and 0 TDs is terrible.
I was referring to his career so far on average (672 yards/year)
But yes, his average year over his career is WR2 numbers. Doesn't mean I like them, but that is how it is.
Now, just because I said he would get picked up by someone, you have me defending TWill like I'm a fan.
That wasn't the point. Just saying.. yes, of course a team would pick him up.
He's 28

Just an example. Mohamed Sanu is considered one of the better WR2s, yet Williams, on average, has better numbers. I like Sanu better, but just saying.

I respect your opinion. I dont see how he would garner much interest at all, especially now.

Amazing because many said that Dez would be gobbled up and would come back to haunt us. The guy cant even find a job. And if Dez cant find a job then Twill definitely wont. He cant even beat single coverage with any consistency. Twill is a terrible #2 receiver. Why is he still on the team. In my opinion he is complete garbage.

Not the same thing. Dez is looking to be treated and paid like and elite receiver. T-Will would not be.

So your argument is that some desperate team might just give him a shot to compete for a spot on the team?

I think we both seem to agree that Twill is nothing special by any stretch. If I was a GM I would even consider him.

Is it uncommon for teams to draft players in the 2nd round without a defined role for them? And then do it 3 times?

Then those teams are probably the ones wallowing in mediocrity like we are.

Now for a 4th round pick like Switzer its a little more understandable. But they clearly had him pegged his first year for special teams play and end arounds ONLY. Short sighted as far as I was concerned. They could have done so much more with the kid. And from what we have now seen the receiving corps was nothing to crow about. Switzer probably had the most speed as anyone.

I assume you are talking about the TE's we drafted, and I will partially concede your point on those 3 picks, although you are having to go back 13 and 11 years for 2 of them, and they hardly constitute "many" of our offensive draft picks. I don't necessarily think the team didn't envision a role for those guys though, I think they just didn't follow through.

As for Switzer, given that it was his first year, and, again, he had missed most of TC and preseason, I don't think it's fair to condemn the team for not doing more with him. If they used him the same way in year 2 I probably would feel differently.

Folks need to stop looking at Austin as a traditional receiver. The Cowboys have been wanting a "web back' since Dunbar left.

As Switzer noted in his recent interview, the team had visions of him as that type of player, but the coaching staff may have had the realization he wasn't that guy while they know Austin is. Keep in mind, Austin has nearly as many career rushing attempts (184) as he does receptions (194).

Austin now becomes a utility player filling in at RB/WR/KR/PR. That made Switzer's role on the team redundant as Beasley is still the team's slot guy.

I liked Switzer's potential but it just became a numbers game.

Well............I think we can see that by trading him they didnt have much of a plan for him. But we can argue that this was because they traded for Austin.

ok why

Stephen said that Oakland saw them trade for Austin and knowing they liked Ward offered him believing Austin and Switzer were sort of redundant
apparently they were correct

although Austin wont be the punt returner imo

I see no reason whatsoever why someone would sign him. I see nothing he does well. Now if you want to argue that someone would take a veteran minimum flyer on him well then whatever. Who cares about that? The point really is that the guy doesnt belong on the team. If he is your #2 receiver you are hurting badly at the position. Which apparently we were. As many had said for years now.

Whats the point of you defending Twill? That would be loyalty to a fault.

He's actually a low #2 receiver or high #3.

And when being depended on as a #1(when Dez was out) he produced high end #2 stats.

No he wouldn't have to sign for the vet minimum lmao.

Whatever the reasons, I see Switz making us pay dearly for dumping him like yesterdays bad apples.....mark my words.

FYI........if you recall......Beasley also rotted on the bench here until Linehan arrived. Heck Demarco Murray rotted on the bench his rookie year until injuries forced Garretts hand. If you recall Teshard Choice was the starting back in front of Murray. We have seen year after year Garretts misuse of skill position players on this team.

Beasley's usage and numbers were increasing before Linehan arrived - he had 2.5 times more receptions in his second season, and almost 3 times as many yards. Beasley actually had more targets and receptions the year before Linehan came to Dallas than the year Linehan arrived, although his total yardage went up a little. In any case, there was no significant increase in Beasley's use until 2016, which was Linehan's 3rd year in Dallas, and then that dropped off again last year to Beasley's lowest totals since his rookie year.

Besides, Beasley was an undrafted free agent that actually walked out of his first training camp and planned to give up football before the Cowboys convinced him to come back and give it a try. Why would it be a surprise that a player in that situation would get limited time as a rookie? It's not as if every other team would have given him a significant role as a rookie.

As for Murray, so he was sparsley used for the first 4-5 games of his rookie year - that's what you call a big deal? Besides, Felix Jones only missed 4 games in Murray's rookie season, so it wasn't just injuries that allowed him to be used more.

I'm still curious how it is you think the Cowboys are the only team that isn't giving every 3rd and 4th round rookie, and even undrafted players, significant playing time immediately.

Hogwash. Beasley had to be talked out of retirement when Garrett was running the offense. It wasnt until Linehan came here and we started actually using 3 and 4 WR sets much more frequently that Beasley starting having success here.

And as for Murray, he didnt even get significant playing time until everyone in front of him went down. Even after his 150 yard performance in his breakout game, Garrett the fool didnt even start him the next week.

Significant playing time? How about more than zero receptions? Is that too much to ask for?

Stop putting words in my mouth. They drafted him in the 4th round he had zero receptions his rookie year and then they turned around and traded him the next year. If you want to stick up for that kind of usage of a 4th round pick, then by all means keep chirping away.

Only question I have is who approached who. I think both teams benefited in terms of addressing need, I think more so with the Cowboys than the Raiders but I would like to know who contacted who for this trade

If our staffed like Ward in 2016 why did they not draft him? Guess Oakland beat them to it will be what I hear.

Sorry, but the stats are there in black and white - anyone can read them. Beasley's usage almost tripled in his second year, which was before Linnehan came to Dallas, and Beasley was actually targeted less the year Linehan came. Beasley has really only had one breakout year, and that was in Linehan's 3rd year as offensive coordinatior. You can say that is wrong all you like, but those are the facts.

Seems you are setting a pattern of posting more out of emotion than out of facts or reason.

This.
It just made sense to both teams.
Also, Switzer had killed Oakland the year before in the return game as well, so they may've liked him more than some others

Seems like you are in the habit of changing the subject until you finally get to a topic you may have an angle on.

I went ahead and pulled it up. Targeted? Should have known when you used THAT term.

His yards went up when Linehan got here and his TD's did "double". And the next year they went through the roof. So yes he was used under Garrett, but he blossomed under Linehan. But one could argue it was his one big season with Dak that was the outlier.
