Why isn’t Stephen Jones doing his job?

You should know by now that the Cowboys don't trade away draft picks. They want more picks if anything. Lose or win that is the way they roll. Obviously, unless they get picks, they don't have anyone they want to trade away.
Agreed. However, they gotta learn how to cut bait with players on the down slope before the value bottoms out. We get gutted on every trade it seems.

Give me name at least?

I just told you, the positions we needed to fill in FA won't happen right now because DTs and safeties aren't on the block mid-season. Skill positions are, but our biggest problems are in the middle of our defense.

The failure already happened. Some of you are just now playing catch up while you all celebrated bringing in oft-injured Barr on a swift decline and talking up our scrub DTs. Oh and the best, suddenly this place loves LVE.

Well for one do we know what Stephens job is? Is it to win a title or something else? If it is to win a title then he is failing miserably. If it is something else like, keeping the Cowboys as the most valuable franchise, manage cost then he is succeeding in spades.

Like father, like son. Unfortunately, he feels he is doing his job.

Sounds like a smart businessman. He knows he has millions of suckers who will come to the games or tune in no matter what.

I agree with that. But he is a bad GM....which he will eventually inherit when Jerry goes away. He is going to be worst than Jerry. And we will be suffering forever to have a competent team that can challenge for the Superbowl.

IMO the Cowboys front office is behind the times on how the teams winning Super Bowls operate. The last 3 SB winners were very aggressive in the FA and trade markets and all 3 have young, aggressive GMs who adopt a win now philosophy and see the cap as a speed bump rather than a road block.

On the flip side however, the Cowboys are fortunate to have the scouting talent of Will McClay. He has allowed the Cowboys drafts to be the lifeline of the team’s relevance. Whatever we think about JJ, SJ and this entire front office, they have drafted better than most teams. The young talent we have obtained through the draft has been very good.

But…here are the problems:
  1. The draft is very important but that alone is NOT enough talent acquisition to win a SB.
  2. Mixing in some top shelf FAs is very important. Our FO no longer values that.
  3. Jerry doesn’t appreciate or value how important having a quality head coach is to winning in the NFL. With no salary cap on coaching, he could hire much better head coaches than he does. But he does not like having any HC who can take up any of his spotlight or threaten his power to do whatever he wants with his toy.
  4. Jerry either doesn’t understand or care that doing things “his way” haven’t worked since the 90s.
  5. Having your children serve as your top executives regardless of qualifications is foolish. The results speak for themselves.

This, drafting along do not care how good you are knocking it out the park (old baseball expression), you still need some FA to help you get there. No you don’t have to get out here and spend like a drunken sailor but you need to spend somewhere along the lines to get where you hope to go.

If you're looking at LB, you may be sorely disappointed, the FO isnt going to 'upgrade' before giving Damone Clark the first refusal.

If the Cowboys win a SB there will be a +20% to 30% increase in revenue from the current numbers the organization is pulling in. He is failing to meet the goals tasked with his job and there should be accountability for his failed actions. Stop leaving money on the table!

I agree they are too conservative in free agency and via trade but kind of a hard time to knock the front office when every move they’ve moved that the fan base and even myself at times killed them for this offseason is working.

- Maher back? “He sucks”….he’s been good.
-sign a back up qb? Nah we’re good with rush
-should have went another way in draft? Smith looks pretty good
-missed on Gregory? By dumb luck dorance Armstrong has been pretty good.
-Terrence Steele “sucks”…..been pretty damn serviceable.
-“they need to pay Schultz”…..he’s gonna be replaced by Ferguson.

they’ve made a lot of mistakes and may again but right now I’d say they deserve some credit. They don’t want to give away draft picks but historically have done so (cooper, williams etc). I’d like them to be more aggressive but not nearly as aggressive as some here would have us running the franchise like it’s madden.

Good points.
However, those teams were built through the draft, and some plan B free agents such as Novacek was. And NO cap to worry about.
So they could bring in players such as Tony Casillas, from a trade as they had a crap load of draft capital to do so.
They could make the trade for Charles Haley. And pay the contract.

Would I trust our WR and TE group as back then. No. Also, however. We have not seen them with Dak at QB other than the 1st game without Gallup. Washington can have a good impact when he returns as well. And the running game is getting going, such as those players had Emmitt. Not comparing any RB to Emmitt. Just saying a strong running game helps tremendously.

I will give them a few games, as well see how they are coming out of the bye week. They may surprise us.

I think you're making his point.

Charles Haley, Thomas Everett, Tony Casillas, Steve Beuerlein and John Gesek were trades critical to creating the 90's Cowboys Dynasty teams.

Jimmy made FIFTY ONE trades in his 5 years at Dallas.

Signing KEY free agents also critical: Jay Novacek, Ray Horton, Drive-by James Washington, Bernie Kosar, Big Nasty Kevin Gogan, Nate the Kitchen Newton, Big Baby Derek Kennard, Ray Donaldson.

Jimmy used every tool to improve, not just relying on draft.

No I am not making his point. All those players came in when there was no salary cap.
Do you think if not for the cap Jerry would not be spending money on these type of players. Yes he would.
He is not about saving a dollar at the expense of fielding a championship team.

In spite what some say.

I brought this up several times already. I'm under the impression that they don't want to keep pushing money forward on Dak's contract. They are saving cap space to roll over so that they can absorb that 50M cap hit, or most of it, without harming the team. They can't do that if they're taking on more contracts.

The Cowboys would have to push 30M forward next year just to get Dak's cap hit to what it is today. I don't think they're going to do that. That would be insane. The good news is, hopefully the cap is rising fast.

After salary cap Jerry went out and traded for Joey Galloway, Roy Williams, Alex Barron, Amari Cooper, Robert Quinn, etc.

He also paid for Deion, LaRoi Glover, Chris Warren, Eddie George, Rocket Ismail, Jason Ferguson, Mike Vanderjagt, Keyshawn Johnson, Terry Glenn, Terrell Owens, Leonard Davis, Ken Hamlin, Dareen McFadden, Anthony Henry, Keith Brooking, Zach Thomas, etc.

You are just going around in circles.

The championship teams of past 2 decades have used the trade and FA in addition to the draft to assemble their teams.

Last year's champions, the Rams are a perfect example.

Both you and Jerry are doing it wrong.

I am doing nothing wrong. I do not have the authority to make trades nor sign FA’s

The Cowboys traded for Cooper in 2018 and it was a great trade. If the right player is up for a trade I think the Jones would do it. The question is who is the guy that is available that would put us over the top. Question…… Would you all have traded all that draft capital for CMC.

You all sound like Cavanaugh. You want to trade for the Moore boys, Brown (probably not available) and sign OBJ.
