Right on.

Great point about a heel champion.

Vince Jr. got his "The Champion must be a face" influence from his dad.

But both the NWA and AWA did very well with heel champions and the whole "I want to see this guy get his butt kicked" mindset of the fan. It sold tickets– and a lot of them.

Flair was great at it. So was Race. And Bockwinkle. They were great at putting their opponent over and making the fan think that this was going to be the night when the local face won the world title.

Absolutely couldn't agree more. Excellent examples.

WWE really had that right for a long time with HHH as well. When he was running hot as a heel champion he had the same thing going.

Unfortunately the WWE doesn't seem to build any credible heels like that anymore. CM Punk was the last heel champion I can remember seeing pull it off properly and I don't recall who did it prior to that since HHH.

JBL was actually pretty great in that roll as well in his one run as champion.

hey hey hey...cut out the Seth putdown!

Don't get me wrong I like Seth. I think he's a very good character. He's a great in ring performer and I think he's very good on the mic.

He's simply not, at this point, that type of heel that I'm taking about.

He might become that. And that would be amazing for the WWE. They need that.

But right now he's not that level of heel.

Good point about HHH and yeah, CM Punk did it very well.

But Vince just doesn't cotton to that angle for long, which is unfortunate.

And you would think with his love of face champions he/the company would do a much better job at developing heel contenders.

The WWWF-era (Backlund) and the WWF-era (Hogan) were loaded with top-flight heels.

Exactly.

He doesn't create white-hot hate in the minds of fans.

As awesome as Austin was as a face champion how great would he have been without a heel Vince, Rock, HHH, and Undertaker?

Faces are great but they're only as great as their heel counterpart allows them to be.

Exactly.

He doesn't create white-hot hate in the minds of fans.

One of the problems I believe Rollins is going to have, as many heels now do, is that he's pretty clever on the mic so he's going to wind up being cheered instead of hated.

So some of this isn't the wrestlers faults anymore because it takes a special talent to make you hate them even when you really want to like them.
