Vince McMahon is *not* a good wrestling mind. He's easily had more colossal blunders than successes.
There are 2 things that separate him from other promoters though:
1. He has always leaned heavily towards having a babyface world champion. This dates back to what he learned from his father who put the strap on both Bruno and then Backlund for extensive periods of time. As Vince likes to say 'you want the fans going home happy.' Most other promotions favored putting the strap on the heel. Those that favored putting the strap on a face (i.e. Memphis with Lawler and AWA with Verne Gagne) did great business. Perhaps the closest thing to the wrestling business is action movies and people don't go to Diehard to see John McClain lose.
2. He's the best *promoter* and marketer of the wrestling business. It's not even remotely close. Forget about how he expanded his business well before anybody else...McMahon is able to promote and market his product so his idiotic ideas are treated by the fans as:
a. finally accepted as a good idea
or
b. quickly forgotten about and swept under the rug
or
c. looked at down the road with laughter and just a 'funny part of pro wrestling.'
Other promotions that would come up with 1/2 of Vince's dumb ideas would see it destroy their business. They just don't have the marketing and promotion of their product to turn a bad idea and get it over or to not have the fans resent them for it.
In WCW, the fans started to treat Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit as 'vanilla midgets.' In the WWE, their lack of size became rarely questioned and they turned into superstars.
