I believe the PS3 would be the better investment, but seems the Xbox is what you need. If you are interested in a baseball game though, the PS3 is a must. MLB The Show is far superior than any other baseball game out there. Baseball fans who play it always are impressed.

I forgot to mention that the E3 expo is happening June 2-4. Usually price drops happen here, theres a rumor (don't hold me to it) that the PS3 will drop either 50-100$. I don't think the XBox will drop more as it is cheaper than the Wii in some places.

Since Madden doesn't come out until August, you might want the wait.

Now to answer your questions:

1. What is the difference between the different versions? Arcade is the cheapest but it is better to buy a better version.

You will need a hard drive to store game PATCHES and UPGRADES avoid the arcade!


2. I don't have a HDTV. Will the graphics be really bad?

They will be horrible man. Get your priorities right. You might have difficulty reading font (words) in some games because your tv sucks. You will be looking at a horrible version of the game where menus are larger than they were intended to be designed as. The entire experience will be bad and when you get the HDTV you will see what you were missing out. Seriously get the TV first than the console. You will enjoy the football games more.

If you do decide for an HDTV over a console. Get something with a QAM tuner. That way you can pick up over the air channels (NBC HD, CW HD, ABC HD, CBS HD, FOX HD) right from your Coaxile in. If you do not want to get a set top box OR a premium HD package (TNT HD, FOX News HD, etc)

That was quite a while ago. This has improved with newer releases.

Also you are starting to see 3 disc games on the 360. Star Ocean: The Last Hope...

MGS4 has a 10 minute install and 2-4 minute per chapter which result in 20 minute total installs allocated across 30 hours of gameplay/movie.

It takes a hell of a lot less time then 20 min to swap disc twice, so again i don't see the huge advantage with blu-ray at this point

well, MGS4 is a special case. It's basically just a giant movie that you have to press "X" occassionally to advance the story, sprinkled in with some gameplay bits. (An exaggeration, but not far off from the truth)

Not all games have installs, and the majority that do take like 5 minutes. The advantage of blu-ray for games is, that although there are installs, you only have to suffer through them once (generally) as opposed to suffering through loading times on games that don't use installs.

Uncompressed Textures and Uncompressed Audio should not be overlooked. The game installs have changed now. Exclusive games do a better job data handling and hiding where loading is done. Uncharted has nearly zero load times except initially when starting the game. A game like Killzone2 which is undoubtedly currently the greatest looking FPS out there has no installs optional or mandatory.

Because of the REQUIRED Hard Drive included in all PS3 models, console developers can force mandatory installs to improve the quality of their games. Remember, a hard drive will always get data faster than a DVD/BluRay drive. For a game like GTA4 it was beneficial to do the 5 minute install because it reduced object popins (a problem where 360 owners with no hard drive and those that chose not to install complained about).

Personally i thought it was a bunch of melodramatic crap by far the worst in the series. I'm a big fan of previous MGS games (1 and 3 to be exact, 2 was pretty meh but the gameplay was solid) so the excessive use of cut scenes doesn't really bother me unless the story is crap like i thought MGS4's story was.
Bosses where unoriginal and characters who die should stay dead.

I really don't see how people can consider this game a master piece though i have no problem saying MGS1 was

Didn't say it was ranked #1 amongst other MGS titles. How can you top the feeling of this after a difficult boss or the scenery from this fight. I thought 4 had its own kickass moments like the ocelot vs snake fight where the music evolves like the series, exiting facility in the gear before time runs out, and the entire scene where ocelot goes crazy with gun fingers on the boat. Definitely many of good moments in 4...

4 had it's moments the return to Shadow mosses was kinda cool and the Ocelot fight (when the MGS1 theme kicked inn at the start) that gave me goose bumps, but there was just far to much cringe worthy crap that just went on and on, The Merryl and Johny stuff, trying to make Raiden cool like Greyfox..., Otacon Naomi cry fest and the ending after the ending. 4 managed to over stay it's welcome in my eyes by draging on and on something i never thought a MGS game could do.

My opinion would be to go w/ the PS3.

- Blu ray - is going to be here awhile. Might as well get it with the system.

Digital downloads is where things are going. In a few years, physical media will be outdated.

- Noise - 360 (even the new ones) can be VERY loud - almost to where it annoys you.

Its not that bad. I suppose if you play with the sound on mute you might get agitated.

- Better technology - There are already plans on an XBOX 720 - and once they do that - Microsoft will stop making 360 games - PS3 is further along and will continue making new games for alot longer. Wireless is a given, both controllers and Internet. You can use the PS3 as a web browser if you like. I've even streamed movies from online and watched them right in the living room w/ my PS3.

Xbox does wireless, XBOX streams netflix.

Heres a report where someone supposedly in the know states that next-gen consoles won't hit before 2013.

- Some really good exclusives coming out or out now. GT5 (racing) is going to blow your mind. Killzone 2 (FPS) blows Halo out of the water. MLB - The Show (baseball) is probably the best sports game ever made. Metal Gear - amazing game. Plus, close to all games are mulitplat. now and they have started using the PS3 to make the game - and then copy the 360 version. I think Madden this year - the PS3 is the lead platform.

- PS3 can do things that the Xbox can't even dream of. The disk space is limited on the 360.

- Free online.

Most of the good games are cross platform. As a result, game selection shouldn't be a major deciding factor unless you have a giant boner for racing games. FPS are FPS anymore. Halo series has gone downhill in its latest installment and as such, all FPS are pretty much the same.

Hey Yeags, I have not read throught this whole thread so this may have already been mentioned but if you are going to buy an X-Box, be sure to invest in a cooling fan. The X-Box is notorious for it's processors going south. I do believe that it is the best gaming system out right now but I've personally gone through 4 of them.
