What if the Cowboys decide to trade Martin next off-season? Get a good pick, or two... Then they invest a round 1, or, at worst a round 2 T/G to "replace" him while it may be Conner doing the replacing...
Keep viewing the OL as the Hidey Hidey Ho of the team, in the draft and doing their best to keep costs low on the unit?
Oy... I fear I tread in difficult waters. I'm a story-teller, not an analyst.
OL, especially OG is a safe pick in the 1st, but I'm not sure drafting OGs in the 1st is the best way to build a team.
Martin will be expensive because he is the best at his position, young and has rarely missed a game; however, on average OGs cost less than the premium positions LT, Pass Rusher, CB, WR and obviously QB.
My preference is to take one of those premium positions if possible. Obviously the BPA will not always be one of these positions which is fine, but I just don't want to go into the draft with OG as the top target.
On the flip side paying 14M per to an OG is not ideal (in theory); however, Martin is the best. He also compensates for issues at RT. He probably extended Doug Free's career by a couple of years.
I can't remember when a contract regardless of size was an issue if it was for a great player that remained great throughout the duration of the contract.
