A few notes here:
We did not lose 700 snaps at DE.
We lost 700 snaps of guys who played some DE.

Zimmer is very unlikely to run 4 DE lineups out there as DQ often did.

There were 1070 snaps on defense. Thats 2140 for 2 positions.
Micah had 864, DLaw had 612. That would leave 664 for all other DE's.
If Sam goes from 300 which made him mad for non-use to 500 then you need all of 165 snaps.

DE is not a need AT ALL.
Fehoko and a vet cheap FA will likely be expected to cover the remaining snaps at DE.

Im a pro Sam Williams guy, but as it is he will be probably be getting 600 or so snaps. Given that he is an poor run defender and has had issues with penalties, I dont see that as a good play
What have you been watching? Sam Williams is actually a pretty good run defender.

They will draft their typical 5th round DE. And tell us how they got value, because the player was not used correctly in college.

Sam Williams does not need to take all of Folwer's and Armstrong's snaps. They will find another DE in the rotation with Golston and Williams.
I also believe ODiggy can play some snaps there as well.

Do we need another top DE, yes, as DLaw's replacement needs to be found as well soon. But is this an immediate need as opposed to DT, OL, RB, LB?
Offer the Commanders a 7th round pick (conditional 6th) to bring back John Ridgeway. That helps secure the DT hole for now. Use a higher draft pick on DE. Still have huge holes at RB, LB, WR and OL.

IMO this is pretty significant. Sam Williams absorbing Fowler snaps gives him close to 600. Lawrence barely went over 600 snaps last year. Its unlikely they would give Williams that heavy a workload. Gholston got 300 last year, and was pretty underwhelming especially against the run.

DE is a position fans need to be open to in the first. Especially if Latu, Verse or Chop is on board
It's a lot of snaps, not hiring asap.

You seem to have this fascination with Ridgeway, you can't give that up AC.

It's simple.

More with less.

A foundation of any sound teambuilding strategy.

I look forward to 5 years from now when Jones Fan Boys claim he never said this.

Zimmer is a huge advantage and he will be able to accomplish more than Dan Quinn. Zimmer is so amazing that the NFL said no thianks to him the last 2 years.

The OP is correct. Even if the quality of those lost snaps is debatable, they are still snaps other players must fill. The D-line has had decent depth lately, and that's changing. There's just no positive spin on this. It's subtraction by subtraction.

You want to pay the superstars big money? It will cost you depth unless you can replace that depth cheaply via the draft.

I have been saying for weeks now that I think this is exactly what the Cowboys are going to do. DE is such a Jerry pick. But if one of the guys you mentioned falls to 24, it would not shock me at all to see Dallas draft him.

And as you say, they made DE another area that needs to be addressed in the draft, just like OT, OC, RB, LB and WR.

And likely FO and coaching staff expecting some help from the young DEs on the roster = stepping up:
1) Chauncey Golston - 3 seasons in, 47 games / 3 starts - but not even 1,000 snaps total at the position (per Sport DFW)?
2) Tyrus Wheat - rookie DNP first 5 games in 2023; on special teams the remaining 12 games - but only 31 snaps at DE.
3) Viliami Fehoko Jr. - rookie was never activated for the first half of 2023 before being placed on IR the remainder of the season.
Almost assuredly this is Golston's last chance; mulligans for Wheat and Fehoko - if rookies come in and shine - both of them could be shown the door before the season starts.

Williams will have a coming-out season and become a starter for us.
I figure he will have more than 12 sacks this coming season.
The problem lays elsewhere and the FAT with DLAW.

If the goal is to just have a body cover snaps then this will do.

If we want to actually improve then we will need more than Fehoko and a veteran stopgap.

If ever there was a time to go BPA, its this year!!!! we have holes everywhere!!!
Many CZers advocating trading out of the first.
However - after reviewing a few rankings of prospects, and following up looking at a half-dozen or so mock drafts - it appears there will be a player that is rated a first-round grade at OT \ C \ WR \ DE \ CB that is will still be on the board when the Cowboys turn at No. 24 rolls around.
Leaning toward Dallas staying put.

Fehoko Jr was on the PS the first half of 2023 before being placed on the IR the last half of the season = no game action his rookie year.
Just like OT Matt Watletzko (on IR his first two seasons) -- they are unknowns going into offseason training for the upcoming season.
