I am confused about nutrition re:Gregory

No what I am saying is - for example - is not all protein is created equal. The quality of protein in a whataburger burger is about as low grade as you can get. Compare that protein to high grade beef or Sablefish and its not even comparable. The effect on the body is not the same.

Please list your credentials. Thanks.
 
Tony romo must be on the same diet

If we can get 30 TDS from Gregory this year, that would be great
 
Michael phelps ate something crazy like 8000-10000 calories a day cuz of his training. It's not far fetched for Gregory to eat like this and still bulk up cleanly if he trains for a long amount of time per day.

That's true...and if I want a Lot-A-Burger (ABQCOWBOY knows what I'm talking about) I have to go get a regular nice cheeseburger and put my own green chile on it! lol
 
I am not talking about supplements. Why do you need supplements if you are eating the right diet?

Because when discussing the science behind nutrition and you start looking at what is being metabolised and gives the best gains/performance they inevitably are brought up. The thing is you are approaching this ideologically as if there is one 'true' way when the science is often contradictory and the leading voices change their minds frequently.

He is working with nutritionists that have him all day 6 days a week right now. I'm sure they prepare him for his training and recovery period properly and it sounds like they send him home with the directive of 'more calories.' The weight he puts on might not be as 'efficient' as possible but look at the context of what he is dealing with. He not only needs to learn how to eat, but he needs to learn how to train under Woicik, learn the techniques Lett and Bloom want as well as Marinelli's scheme. The Cowboys, NFL and NFLPA have their initiatives and outreach programs. There are media responsibilities. There is Calvin Hill's program he is involved in. He is moving to a new city. That is a tremendous amount for anyone to take in much less a 21 year old.
 
My big point about a guy like Gregory is priority #1 has to be caloric intake. Anytime he is deficient in caloric intake he is going to be losing ground every single day he is even a little deficient in caloric intake. His caloric intake is so high (and likely protein intake given he is a non-vegetarian young male who lifts weights) out of necessity that it would be hard for him to be deficient in appropriate nutrients unless his diet was crazy out of whack.

So him eating at fast food establishments to get the calories he needs is going to be of close to zero concern for anyone involved in his training. They'll worry when they see that he is mostly gaining fat and not any muscle which is quite unlikely given the amount of training he does.

Guys like him are truly a special breed unto themselves - they don't follow the normal rules the rest of us need to follow when it comes to nutrition. The Cowboys already have had a fair bit of experience with a very similar guy - Tyron Smith. Even at age 24 Tyron complains to the other OL about how much he has to eat to maintain his weight and the other OL think he is crazy because they have to be careful about what they eat so they don't get too plump.

He probably won't be like this his whole life and at some point later in his career he may need to become more careful with how he consumes his calories but that is probably quite a few years off.
 
He probably burns through so many calories that exactly how he gets them is probably close to irrelevant. He is about 240 pounds and has less than 5% body fat. The key for a guy like him is just actually making sure he gets all the calories he needs each day so his crazy metabolism doesn't result in his body leaching calories out of his muscles and nutrients out of his organs, fat and bones.

As for his micronutrients, he probably eats so many calories that he will get them no matter how bad his diet is.

IMO, diet is probably more important for those who tend to gain extra weight than for those who are underweight and have very low body fat.

Dude...when you are out in the hot Texas Sun working your butt off running, drilling, lifting, you need anything and everything you can eat just to try and replenish what you lose in just one day.

Once you reach a certain weight, not fat, but have some pounds on you, then the Cowboys nutritionist is going to help a player once the season is underway. As of now, Gregory needs to gain some weight.
 
Being a medical doctor doesn't automatically privy one to special dietary knowledge. Nutritionist training is entirely different from either what either GPs or medical specialists get.

I agree about the diet thing. Calories are not just calories, although even the health 1000 or whatever class I had in college taught that crap - while still giving the obligatory nod to vegetables (somehow failing to catch the dissonance). Sure he probably isn't going to be eating steak all the time, and a few slices of pizza isn't going to dramatically affect him - but living on fast food is just bad period.Calling it "low octane" is rather generous imo.

Most doctors that I know that are worth a damn are constantly reading medical journals, consulting with their network and more importantly know where to go to get credible science. I will take random doctor over random web poster every day and twice on Sundays.

He said he got sick and lost a lot of weight in the weeks before the combine. I think this entire thing may be a bit overblown when we look back at this down the line.
