Romo Scenarios and their cap hits

Zero chance he goes to Houston.

I wouldn't say zero, but I wouldn't give it a good chance either. It would require the team to admit a complete failure on the Osweiler deal, and they hate to admit that, even when it's obviously true.

Houston wouldn't be a bad spot, though. The division is dreadful. I mean, I would rather play there than for the Jets and have to try and beat the Pats twice a year.

I just wonder if Jerry could stomach watching Tony and the Texans manhandle the Cowboys in the Super Bowl next year.
What a gutpunch that would be! DWare got his ring and Jerry might have to watch Tony get his on another team.

Again, I think some folks are strongly overestimating Tony's trade value when teams know he's likely going to be released if they just wait. Unless a team is desperate for him, or teams fear there will be a bidding war for him when he inevitably hits the open market, I just don't see these high draft picks some are predicting.

Tony wants a ring more than anything at this point in his career. You are right that they might sit Osweiler for a year to give Tony a chance at
that ring and Tony might be willing to do a team friendly deal to get the chance to get it. Lots to think about and discuss next FA season.

I agree. More likely that Jerry releases him to pick his team on or before June 1st is the choice.

Teams are going to be weary because of Romo's injury history. Can't see a team giving us much for him. Chances are they'll wait until after he's cut.

You are not paying attention to the league if you believe Romo is untradeable if they manage his contract properly.
They will get a second or third rounder plus a high conditional based on health.

It's not a knock on Tony to not think he's easily tradeable. It's simple logic when he's likely to be released anyway, that most interested teams would likely wait it out.

Not if they KNOW other teams will be salivating at the chance for a true #1. Broncos, Jets, Texans and Chicago all have good defenses and become true contenders with him.

And that's true, too. It's a gamble either way.

I think some fans here just want to ignore Tony's injury history and think he's going to be like the old Tony. It's a big gamble for a team to give up too much for him. Sure he looks good in practice. He looked good in practice before pre-season. Once he got hit he went down.

I want to add, I doubt Romo approves a trade to just any team.

As others have quipped, perhaps the team owes him nothing, but Jones loves him and won't just trade him to any team to rot for his last couple years (Browns, Niners). Jones has always wore his heart on his sleeve.

I think NYJ, DEN, AZ (Palmer is declining fast) and BUF as a dark horse (despite Taylor) are the biggest chances for landing him in a trade. Someone brought up Houston, and that would be interesting, too. Brock is horrid, but they do have a lot locked up in him, but they are missing a dynamic QB (simlair to AZ's situation).

Edit, I see you covered the Brock deal in a further post, Stash :) (as I was replying) :)

Agreed, why would Romo or Jerry want to go to get hurt Romo behind a crappy OL.

It appears to me that Jerry is trying to convince Romo to be backup/QB1a/OC/HC in a lifetime package.
I think the fair thing for Romo to stay in Dallas is to play the rest of the year as backup (like he announced) and have an open competition next camp with winner being the QB for the whole season (at least the announcement).
It would not be the end of the world if Dak has to sit for a year or so, but Cowboy cap management would be challenged.

If traded, Denver would be the obvious fit, and Romo would be a logical 1-2 year QB for their window with the dominant defense.

Texans would be the 2nd best fit, even if they are in Texas. Having Osweiller's contract is not a deterrent IMO. Any rational GM would realize Romo is risky due to his injury history and a capable 2nd QB is needed. The hope would be to have enough of Romo in the regular season and healthy through the playoffs.

I dont see any other fits.

Jets have a nice #1 pick and even a swap of picks would get the Cowboys their DE.
A nice DL, but not sure about their OL and offense in general.
Their horrible record is horrible for a reason.
Their skilled offensive players are questionable.
I hope Romo does not want to start for a mediocre team being the backup/QB1a in Dallas.

Arizona - hard to believe Cowboys would help create a major competitor in the same division.

Buffalo - Not sure that much of an upgrade to get Romo.

Cleveland/SF/Chicago - Jerry hopefully would not do that to Romo. Romo hopefully would not do that to Romo.

The time in NOW. I'm sure the front office is well aware they need the cap space. Sure, the future looks bright but we need to look at RIGHT NOW.
We have a top level RB and QB playing on their rookie contracts. Now is the time to spend the cap money on the defensive side of the ball.
I would pay big for a top defensive free agent while we have other players way outperforming their current deals.

Great post OP.

Here are few scenarios for next year

Cap Hit Scenarios...............2017.......................2018.................2019
Stays and plays....................24.7m....................25.2m.................23.7m
Restructures.........................16.7m....................29.2m.................27.7m
June 1st trade/cut.................10.7m*....................8.9m...............*(cap hit stay 24.7m until 6/1)
Trade/cut in Spring...............19.6m.....................0m
Retires*.................................19.6m....................0m...................*(could recover 5m from SB)

My Plan
Stays as Back-up..................15.7m...................11.7m..................7.2m
Traded after June 1st............10.7m*...................8.9m.................*(13m in cap relief in March)
Traded/cut in 2018.................15.7m..................16.9m

Here is one other scenario - stay and compete for starter in 2017 and restructure for 4 year deal (if allowed) for salary cap space.
Restructure will change 2017 salary to minimum + 13 million restructure bonus
So his cap impact would be 1M + 3.25M + 6.8M = 10M
Is this restructure allowed?
Is my calculation correct?

Obviously this kicks the can down the road.

Ok this is interesting to me. If Romo gets traded how would you do it? Me personally would be to a non threat. Everyone keeps saying denver? Why move him to a contender? Ship him to the browns for a ton of picks. Lol

He'll retire before he goes to the Browns. With his injury history he'll want to go to a contender. No other reason to play.

I think Chicago may be in play. Ryan Pace (GM) was at Eastern Illinois when Romo was a freshman on campus and Cutler is amazingly bad. Good match.

But Romo could renegotiate down with Dallas. Also any trade would very likely see Romo negotiate an extension with less money overall that was more based on incentives. If you look at what the Rams and Eagles paid in trades to get Goff and Wentz, they gave up a ton to get guys who had never played a down in the NFL. (Also think about what people on this board were recommending we trade to move up).

Romo has health issues but the odds are he could give a contending team 24 starts over the next two years. Stash is right that the Bradford trade was fairly unique, but if a contending team is in the position Dallas was last year with guys like Weeden and Cassell would they give up a #2 and a conditional #3?

I absolutely believe they would.
