Thompson received a pretty healthy signing bonus for a now name player. I see people easily scratching him off the 53, but not TWill. Granted TWILL has a higher SB, but he seems to be a lot more of a bonehead.

I will not be surprised if Thompson makes it over TWILL. As a side note, TWill getting suspended would really help us out on the initial 53. That's why I don't think he will get suspended before the first game and the initial roster is set.

Thompson's signing bonus is why you think they keep him then using the same logic says twills contracr keeps him on the 53. That's not to mention twills career is light years better than Thompson's.

This is the first year in a long time that I have felt we have the quality to flip a player at either DE or WR for a draft pick. It feels like a mistake though to let a sub 25 y.o that's showing something go in favor of holding on to 29 y.o guys.

Thompson and TW are the two I'd let go. I'd find a way to offload TW in a trade though even if we have to give up a 6th or 7th rounder.

Its hard to tell who to keep and who to let go when your not out there every day on the practice field. I dont think they let Williams go because he is cheap has made some big plays both good and bad and at least Dak knows Williams. That will earn him a spot for one more season at least. I think for sure Austin and Gallup make the team. I like the kid Lenoir but need to see more of him! Walker brought up that Noah Brown was an elite blocker. Thats something to look at with the rest of these WRs along with who is the better special teams player. All this competition is good and may the best players earn their spot!

Oh he too good to make this team? That's just dumb. Twill is a goopd player. He doesn't have to be a superstar. He needs to be our #3-4 receiver and if some of the new guys works out he will be. That would give us really nice depth. People can hate how he catches with his body but he still catches at a high rate, had above average separation, can run routes. He has the most production than any receiver on the team and has never missed a game. Why get rid of quality depth just cause he isnt Julio Jones?

Because it's not in a vacuum. There is different money attached to each player. The comparison is essential:
Terrance Williams
Deonte Thompson + 2.7m
Lance Lenoir + 3m
Noah Brown + 3m

So it's not enough for TW to be the best, he has to be the best after being handicapped 2.7m to Thompson and 3m to Lenoir and Brown. Of course, this is predicated on us being able to find a trade that doesn't cost us money because TW's contract is guaranteed.

A trade saves us his base salary, so we'd save 3.5m, but ultimately, I don't think it'll come down to money. We have plenty of space, with even more coming.

He's not an idiot? Lol. Uhhhhh. Ok!!

Is he Ped user, abuser, weed junkie? He is a steady player not great but isn't costing us much. He signed for less to stay here, which shows a lot more character than most players on this team.

Williams is one of the few receivers who has a rapport with Dak. That alone keeps him on the 53, imo.
His practically guaranteed contract that makes him prohibitive to cut makes it even more likely he stays.

It would save us 3.5m but Lenoir/Brown are on 500k and Thompson is on 800k so the difference is 3m/2.7m. We are in a good cap situation so we can afford to do what we feel is best. I personally think Lenoir is the better prospect long term and that TW is blocking progress but understand that others will see it differently.

Last time we let a guy like Lenoir go, he went to NE, his name was Danny Amendola! They better hang on to Lenoir.

He's established a very close bond with Dak from what I'm seeing lately.

Dak and plenty of fans would more than likely be upset with his release.

Deonte Thompson was arrested and charged with felony possession in 2014. Amazingly, the charges were dropped after Thompson claimed the duffel bag was his but the drugs inside it were not. Seems like he's got a bit of bonehead in him, too.

"Body catcher" Williams caught 67% of his targets last season, a substantially higher rate than Beas (57%) and Dez (52%). He's also got a bigger dead cap hit than Thompson ($6 million higher) if he's released, so other than simply not liking him it makes little sense to cut TWill in favor of Thompson.

We are considering $1M a "pretty healthy signing bonus" now?

I wouldnt use that as a basis for Twill getting cut, as Twill's signing bonus was $5M.

Consider this. The Cowboys gave Nolan Carroll $4 million guaranteed. And then cut him after a game and a half.

A $1 million signing bonus guarantees nothing to Thompson besides that check. If he doesn't get and stay healthy, I have little doubt that this team would cut its losses.

The point is that TWills guaranteed money isn't prohibitive to cut him and that would be partially offset by the dead money to cut Thompson instead. I don't see both of them making the roster currently, although they might.

Yeah, that's in the neighborhood of what is guaranteed to TWill. Maybe the guaranteed money saves him. There's a lot of smoke around TWill and the team seems to be getting away from that kind of thing.

Couple that with the fact he played all last year without a single TD tells me he is far from safe. Time will tell.

They started last season with:

WR - 6
RB - 5 (including FB)
TE - 3 (technically Rico made the 53 but was moved to IR after a day in order to be eligible to return)

That is 14 total for those 3 positions (considering FB as RB).

I think 14 is the likely number this year also.

TE - 3
  • At this point Rico seems unlikely to make it. He was clearly 4th string in the PS game and he didn't play any ST snaps.

RB - 4
  • They have 3 backup RBs that somewhat similar (Big, good straight-line speed. limited "wiggle").
  • The FB is somewhat similar to the backup RBs. More runner/receiver than most FBs.
  • Zeke
  • Rod Smith
  • Bo or DJackson
  • Olawale
RB/WR (Tavon Austin) - 1
They could as discussed in the past consider Austin in the RB head count.

WR - 6
  • Based on TE/RB head count, 6 spots remain for WR.
  1. Hurns
  2. Gallup
  3. Beasley
  4. Lenoir - Great training camp, but not a size or speed guy.
  5. TWill - 3.5M guaranteed (money not yet paid)
  6. Thompson - 1M signing bonus (already paid)
  7. Noah Brown - The coaches liked him last year as a hybrid WR/TE. His blocking is elite for a WR. Has been injured during camp.
  1. Lenoir - Great training camp, but not a size or speed guy.

Reducing it down (5 from these options):
Rico (zero or 1)

RB (2 or 3 of these)
Bo
DJackson
Olawale

WR (2 or 3 these)
Lenoir
TWill
Thompson
Noah Brown

I think there's the possibility right now of keeping 4 TEs and 7 WRs based on play and the fact that those are our most questionable positions on offense.

My breakdown of the offensive 25 would be:

2 QBs: Prescott, Rush

3 RBs: Elliott, Smith, Scarbrough

1 FB: Olawale

4 TEs: Swaim, Barwin, Gathers, Schultz

7 WRs: Hurns, Beasley, Austin, Williams, Gallup, Lenoir, Thompson

8 OL: Smith, Williams, Frederick, Martin, Collins, Looney, Fleming and Green or Edwards

It might not shake out that way as things will change throughout camp, but that's probably how I would lean right now.
