Byron Jones: Is he a bad safety?

No it's not.

But for a first year starter at the position he showed me more than any safety we've had in a while.

Perfect his first year? No.

But I expect improvement with experience.

And obviously other folks like Chris Collinsworth saw something in the kid.

Perhaps you should see the all 22...Everyone was in perfect unison in coverage....rolling the zone w/ Rodgers...except for one knucklehead that just happened to have his head in his A** on that play and was just caught dead footed. It only takes one to blow it for everybody...And on that play it was Jones. Funny how he seems to be the guy that just happens to get caught blowing coverages in big situations. But hey...It was only the playoffs....and he's a #1 pick. So he's got some leeway to play with. Enjoy your sleep.

Throw wouldn't have been made if Lawrence hadn't crashed down towards the center of the offensive line and therefore there was zero contain on that side of the field.

To me Lawrence taking a severe inside pass rush was death... It totally opened up that side of the field for Rodgers to roll out.

He's mediocre, looks small, and not a ballhawk. Meh.

Average. Not stepped up his game. Isn't a playmaker. Right now I don't think twice about cancelling his 5th year option.

I don't think it is a coincidence that in Jones' first full year at safety Church, Wilcox, and Claiborne had career years. You also had Anthony Brown, a rookie, look really good. I think a lot of it, not all of it, was because of Byron.

Our fans think Hitchens is good too. I think Byron plays the safety position about as well as Hitchens plays linebacker.

Agree.

Fans have a hard time envisioning what a play would have looked like if players away from the ball had done something differently.

The defender nearest to the ball almost always gets the blame by fans.

He seems above average to my eyes but as a first round pick, he had a disappointing 2nd year.

He's ok I guess....he has room to improve. I'm rooting for him. We need him to improve to be a decent defense.

I don't know if I'd call him bad, but he certainly seems to be nothing special. Peoples expectations got out of whack after he had that one good game against Gronk 2 years ago and started getting hyped to the moon.
