Bam!

When Peyton Manning is out fishing he's not concentrating on football. Would anyone care? Would anyone care if Romo was out fishing in his time off?

For somre reason, judging a beauty contest is fundamentally different than fishing to some people.

Exactly. Romo could be fishing at a beauty contest. ;)

I understood your comparison. My point is, people who have voiced concerns about Romo's extracurricular activities may suggest Palmer could have been a better football player if he had focussed more on football. He might be their poster child.
I made a post about the extracurricular activities that's been posted about Romo. Are those unusual? Should they really warrant that much concern?

Ice made a great point about how Romo could be at Valley Ranch 10-12 hours a day, but the media will only report the two he spent at the local bar to unwind.

I mean there were folks who were glad he didn't make the cut for the U.S. Open saying he needed to focus on football and didn't even read Archer's blog about he still put in his daily workout at the Ranch BEFORE showing up for his tee-time. If that's not dedication, then I don't know what is.

It's because of the bewbs.

Good for him. If you can take advantage of your celebrity, and not have it interfere with your career, why the hell not? He could rpi his knee apart this year, and never be the same. Then, noone's gonna give a crap who Tony Romo is. Live it up.
Then he might have to resort to hanging out with C-listers like Mr. Belding.::eek::

And your point is? :) Do you wish to engage what I'm saying, or what you would make me out to be saying?

I'll say it again. I don't mean that he is to live, breath, eat, and drink football. I mean, I want a guy who loves the game more than he loves the perks that come to him because of the game. I want a guy who understands how important this season is, both FOR HIM, and for this team. I want a guy who understands he is at the doorstep of a great possibility both for himself and for his team, so that what is uppermost in his mind is not beauty contests and the latest celebrity party, but being a great QB and leading his team to a great year. I want a guy who knows what Lab already pointed out, "I haven't really done anything yet."

So, I'm not saying 100% football, I'm saying, understand what is right in front of you and do everything in your power to make sure you make the most of it on the football field.

And I'm also admitting that ALL OF THIS MAY ALREADY BE THE CASE! He may have his mind in the exact right place. Goodness, I know I don't know the guy. I haven't had a single conversation with him. EVER.

All I was saying is that when I keep hearing about some party he has attended, or some beauty contest he's judging, it concerns me as a Cowboys fan.

Is that allowable?

Yes it is allowable, and I agree with you 100%. It is of small corcern now, but he is starting to raise little yellow flags from my perspective. He hasn't arrived yet, yet he seems to take every opprotunity to put his self in the limelights. It is just raising an eyebrow now but this could be a potential problem down the road IMO.

Hmmmmmmm. So our Romo is going to judge Miss Universe?...

Do we think one or more of the contestants will want to "influence" the judges?......

I wonder how Miss Underwood is going to like that?......

I have a bad feeling about all this. ;)

He was shooting for the US Open two years ago before anyone knew who he was. I don't see how people could say he's now using his fame and limelight. 99% of the players chase girls and play golf (or in lieu of golf pickup basketball, or video games, or dominos). The reason Tony gets hated on is because he's so good at it it makes the newspapers.

When I hear coaches complain that Romo is spending too much time away from the sport, then I'll be worried (as opposed to a few fans, some of whom have been long time Romo doubters). But until then, I've only heard the words "gym rat" to describe his work ethic.

so now he's "putting himself there"?

does he call the media and say "hey, carrie and i will be at ghost bar at 10pm - come on out".

if you were asked to judge a pageant, would you say "no, i need to focus on work"?

he's a young kid living a dream and to a point we've all got to be a little jealous. if i were 26, the qb for the cowboys, probowl in my 1st year (not even starting) and all of this were thrown at me, i'd react like a 26 year old would react most likely.

have a great time romo - before long, it's over and hopefully you've got a great career AND social life to look back on.

What has he embraced that's been so bad? Just curious.

Going to a couple of basketball games
"Dating" a 2nd tier Country singer
Golfing...
Judging a fluff pageant.

Have I missed anything?

I think what you are missing is the pattern of attention-seeking behavior. Why would he make sure he was seen chatting with Carrie Underwood before a big game? He knows the cameras are out there -- is there something oh so pressing that he needed to tell her? No, he wanted to get on camera. Why would he bother with judging the Miss Universe pageant? Does he need the money? Does he think he gets to have sex with the contestants?

These behaviors may become an issue. If he continues down this path, he'll end up nothing more than some ex-celeb trying to parlay his former status - I don't want to see Tony Romo become the next Jake Lamotta. Although we could have fun speculating who would play him in the movie version.

Allowable, yes. Sensible? I don't know that I can go there man and I am being dead serious when I say it.

Let me ask it this way, is Tony Romo ending up on the Police Blotter reports? from where I sit he is not engaging in things that damage the reputation of the Dallas Cowboys in ANY way, shape, or form.

Just for the sake of review, let's discuss a couple of things. He's been linked to Jessica Simpson and now Carrie Underwood. He was out partying with her. It was his birthday. Can you please give me one example of a player who should not celebrate his birthday.

How about an example of a player who should not date?

Matt Leinart (like Romo doesn't have the skins on the wall of a Brady or Peyton) has been linked to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, much more in the train wreck cateogories of taste than Tony. Let's simply be honest here, football players get girls. If that girl is famous it is going to make news. Think Roy Williams and Kelly Rowland, Lance Rentzel and Joey Heatherington, Troy Aikman and Lorrie Morgan.

I can't help but laugh at the belief that Carrie Underwood cost us the game against Philly last year. That is beyond ridiculous, yet some give heed to it.

How about golf? Do you have any idea how many players play golf? Tony's crime is that he's good at it? I'm sorry, but that's just over the top. How many players spend hours playing Madden? Now someone will try and tell me that is still studying football. No, it's sitting on your couch and working your thumbs.

Is Tony Romo getting fat? Is he skipping workouts? Is he screwing up? Is he going to strain his neck judging a beauty contest?

I don't get the hand wringing. I won't even pretend to understand it. Call me when he's getting bailed out of jail. Then I will be concerned. Call me when he is 25 pounds over his playing weight. Then I will be concerned.

All I see is a young man living the life that I would if I were in his shoes.

Honestly, I see this is as a pretty big reach if you're going to go by those examples and call them attention-seeking.

Wouldn't you do all that if you got the chance? I mean, as single guys, pretty much 80% of your time is spent thinking of ways to impress the ladies. With our shallow minds that's the reasoning behind wanting to play a skill position in high school - for the glamour, and the girls. Tony's just on another level.

I admit, seeing him chat it up pre-game with Carrie was a little off-putting to me. But if you go to a game, and get there early, all the players are chatting it up with all sorts of people before the game. Tony (again) just happened to be chatting it up with another celebrity.

Do "attention-seeking" activities take away from his concentration moreso than non "attention-seeking" activities?

Or is this some problem you're alluding to that has nothing to do with his performance on the field?

He's pretty dang popular.

The only thing I have to add to this subject is, this is a crutial year for Romo and he's going to have to make a huge statement to the league. All eyes are on Romo, because until you've already proven yourself in this league, you are 1 year away from being moved out of the league.
I don't care how many off the field opportunities he entertains, just as long as he knows this is it for him.

Jones and company are licking their chops to go after a franchise QB if he doesn't step up this year.

i would. sometimes i am asked to do things that are in the public eye for local music and i do it. why? cause it's fun for the most part. it's something to do and remember later not many people get a chance to do. so i'll take my opportunties as they come and be thankful for whatever measure of success i enjoy.

Let's get this thread back on a more palatable topic, please. Last year's winner.
