To me it’s more of a calming effect. The days of the “Hot Boyz” talk (without any backing it up), the Jaylon Smith non-sense…the needless Greg Hardy drama…just seems to me the waters are calmer here than they used to be.
Yeah, the two remaining "H. B. members" (Lawrence and Armstrong) have cast that moniker aside, and the guy everyone was rooting for to make it back as a player his rookie year morphed into persona non grata on and off the field 5 seasons later.

Compare Cooks to Ty Hilton. That's who the organization preferred to take into the playoffs last season. Yeah, the Texans wanted a 2nd. So what? If you are trying to win.
The Texans are the ones who passed on a 3rd for a guy that didn't want to be there and had to settle for a 5th round pick and get a 6th next year as a kicker for eating $6 million of his salary.

The acquisition for WR Brandin Cooks is another good off-season move for the Cowboys. We got him for essentially 5th and 6th round picks, and Hou has apparently agreed to pay a chunk of Cooks’ salary next year. Cooks is a consistently solid receiver who came into the league the same time as Beckham. (I wanted to compare him with OBJ because of all the talk about getting Beckham this off-season)

STAT COMPARISON
Brandin Cooks

AgeReceptionsYardsTDsYds per Rec.Yds per game
296308,6164913.765.3

Odell Beckham, Jr.
AgeReceptionsYardsTDsYds per Rec.Yds per game
305317,3675613.976,7

Some quick comparisons outside of stats-
  • Cooks is a little younger than Beckham by less than a year. (He was younger entering the draft)
  • Cooks is about an inch shorter
  • Beckham was faster coming into the league.
  • Cooks is considered a dependable route runner with great hands.
  • Cooks has been more durable than Beckham.
This is a very good acquisition!
Obj has better hands avd chsnge if direction. Cooks has more speed and better durability.

Imagine getting one of the best route runners who could be a real deep threat at age 27 for the same cap $ and not just a one year rental without having to give up a 5th rounder and only a 6th. Imagine that.

Houston fans have to be fuming. Their cheapness at the trade deadline cost them serious draft capital. This trade is so heavily skewed in Dallas' favor when I first saw it this morning I had to check it wasn't a troll account reporting it.

Cooks is a 5'10 slot WR. I hope Dak can find him.
In Rayne Dakota Prescottas defense, he was able to find 5’8 Cole Beasly 75 times his rookie year so I think he can find Cooks, lol……just hope they get good chemistry

cooks IMO has mirrored Coopers career which maybe being little closer to home , fans may understand that comp, both played for more then 3 teams both have 6 -1k yard season, both have 1k at all there new teams, both around the same YPC and close to the same tds etc.

Beckham’s best was several rungs above Cooks but two ACL’s and a bit of a bad attitude levels the playing field.
several, show me?

lots of tall tales given his reality tv type status but the proof is in the careers they are very close in comps. But best thing is cooks has maintained his, his whole career while OBJ has had 3 of his last 4 season under 500yards and 3 surgery's to 2 knees. Cooks is the better choice now so who cares what he night have been 4-5 years ago?

now Hopkins is and was a rung above all 3 cooks, cooper and OBJ but those 3 are very close in career production. but dhop asking price was too much.

It probably makes your draft less about need. Every time you pick up a free agent solution to a need it should allow you to focus more on best available talent.
This is an underratedly good comment.

The career gross/average numbers aren't that relevant.

What are they now?

Last season for both:

YPT
Cooks 7.5
OBJ 6.5

OBJ is just all hype at this point. His most recent season numbers were crap, and he's coming off missing a full year for a knee injury. 20mil? I want some of what he's smoking.

But the real comparison for Cooks, IMO, is Hilton.

PFR has them at the exact same size, 5-10, 183. You're getting the same kind of deep threat.

Hilton is older, but we saw that he could still play. The guy we got last year, jumping in midseason, was very effective for us.

Hilton is one of those pro's pros. More talented over his career. He came in with a great attitude for us. And we know what we're getting.

Beyond age, I like the most recent numbers for Hilton better. Better YPT over recent years.

I *especially* like the salary and compensation. Nobody will get him as cheap as last year again, but Spotrac has him at 6mil, and I'd take that and no draft pick compensation over Cooks.

I bet we could have gotten him for less, too, though maybe we missed our chance at a real discount. End of last season, I would have told him we liked him and wanted him back. Instead of upending himself again, he could have just stuck in Dallas. Jerry could have sold him on the benefits of ending his career as a Cowboy, and that's not bs.

That ship has probably passed now. But if he's interested in another no camp deal for very cheap, we should sign up.

Same size and type of player as Hilton, and that was working out fine.

I'm encouraged that they recognize that they need some speed opposite Lamb.

Next stop: realizing that they should send Pollard's speed downfield more often. We sent him deep once in 4 years and it produced a 60+yard td.

My dream addition to the team is a tweener big RB/FB to pair with Pollard, keeping Pollard as a tailback and motion RB/WR.
