Are we really worried about his back? Even with a 5 yr contract he will only be 29 or 30.
Worse case senario is just franchising him which maybe hard on the cap but he deserves the money. Average top 5 WR which is fine.

Why do people think we won't be able to pay Dez and Smith?

Have you guys paid attention? Our cap next year is in strong shape and that's before you consider the big jump in the cap.

Dez deserves his money.

As to the value of the wr position.... The 49ers are still desperately searching for guys to compliment Crabtree. Seahawks paid up for Harvin. Brees has always had good to great pass catchers. Brady had a lot of success including a superbowl trip with a guy named Moss. Manning has always danced with a Wayne Harrison and now Thomas at his disposal.

In fact who are all these superbowl contenders doing it without a great receiver?

Our cap is in strong shape. Of course we have two mammoth extensions looming. I hope he either gets his money or we get something in return that softens the blow.

How is this news exactly? I don't believe anyone could logically expect the man to discount his services. Here's to hoping he and Smith break the bank.

I am.... Probably not Jerry though...you know how he likes his shiny quarters.
Why not be like New England who makes the playoffs every year and does not pay receivers or anyone really outside
the QB. It's not like we have smelled the playoffs for years. Seattle doesn't have great "high priced" receivers either.
We have to stop paying these outlandish contracts to players when we are so many years away from playoff *********.

Pay Dez, we paid everyone else so why short change Dez? We all knew Lee was injured prone that is why his contract did not include a lot of guaranteed money.
Also it sicken me how a lot to see these fans in players pockets. Who cares when it come to players like Dez. He has done everything they have ask for him. How about this , let's take away this guy 1300 yards and +10 tds a season and see how this team looks.

Some of you people drive me crazy with all the complaints about giving him too much money. You're supposed to pay your best players big money... and Dez probably is our best player, maybe Tyron but whatever. But I swear half of yall would be satisfied if we just had a bunch of scrubs players that didn't cost much as long as we're under the cap. What's wrong with paying the second best receiver in the league who's only 25 and from the Dallas area $10mill per?? I know you can't just throw out ridiculous contracts to everyone, and I was against the Romo contract extension last year, but giving Dez big money is not a bad move by any means... he's earned it.

After reading this thread, or a part of it anyway, it has occurred to me what is wrong with this team.

They haven't cut all their stars because these guys want to get paid.

I think the 100 million dollar man and the rest being minimum wage guys is a theory that hasn't bee tried.

What insight this board brings to the game of football.

There's no doubt that Dez is going to get paid.
Zero

I do think Eugene Parker and Dez will give Dallas a tiny break (not too much) if he extends earlier this year vs waiting.

What in the past makes you think Dez won't get paid by Jones? Frankly I think JJ will wind up overpaying him .. he seems to make that mistake a lot.

Brady & Manning, then Rodgers & Breeze, then you got the next 5 including Romo, Luck, Roethlisberger, Ryan & Wilson. I'd put our quarterback in the top 5.

I'm not going to derail the thread. I will just tell you that you are in the VAST minority with that opinion.

Of course Dez will get paid. That is, has been, and always will be the Cowboy way...
I wonder why New England wins every year and we don't??? They don't overpay for anybody except Brady...
They let them walk if they don't sign for their number...Novel concept. Jerry never learns and never will.
Dez is a good, Not Great, player because he can be taken out of games. Why spend 100mil on good???

Apparently because you want the players to act like lap dogs when they go into retirement. Id be a lap dog too if you pay me 50 million during my career.

I tried to copy and paste something from overthecap.com, but can't get the format right. I'm at work so can't dedicate the time to it right now.
So if anyone is interested, look at the top 10 Patriots vs. the top 10 cowboys salary cap figures for 2014. Now cowboys still have austin on their, I guess until June 1st.
Looks pretty even to me. Probably most teams are similar.
But yet people seem to want to use this as an argument against Dallas and the mismanagement of the salary cap.
