A player doesn't have to be a complete bust for it to be clear they weren't worth the 1st overall pick, just like any qb we pick probably won't be worth the 4th overall pick.

Neither of these guys is highly heralded. They just happen to be the top guys...

Mayock has said that Wentz has the same skillset as Luck. Goff has been compared to Rodgers. We get it. You don't like the guys. But I'm guessing most of the NFL disagrees with you.

You have a higher likelihood of success drafting one high in the first round, that doesn't mean you should reach for a player high.

Most years these guys are bottom of the 1st or in the 2nd round.

Most years these guys are at the top of the first but they should be drafted later for sure. Not sure about Goff.

In fact I like all three. IF you think one is a franchise QB you draft him wherever you can do it.....which is usually high. But you might be able to jump back into the first and grab Lynch. There will be players in the 3-5.

It doesn't have to be one or the other.

They can draft Goff at 4 and draft a QB in the 6th or 7th to stash on the PS.

DAL has ignored the QB position for way too long.

I wouldn't spend two picks of a developmental QB. If you pick a QB at #4 then that's it for QBs IMO. There are some players in the lower rounds who can probably help. I'll be surprised if at least one pick on the last day doesn't help somewhere.

I don't think its a sound plan to draft a QB with the intention of putting him on the PS.

Now I wouldn't be opposed to getting Goff and a guy like Hogan in the 6th. But you'll have to keep him on the 53. And that also means your plan should be to replace Romo in the next year or two.

And honestly, I don't think Jerry is thinking long term. He will completley blow this thing and try to get a QB in the 3rd or 4th.

Yet one may still turn out to be a bust. But here I think not. I think all three of the top QBs look fine. And there's a couple more who have the ability to be a player. Hackenberg, Jones, Brissett, Hogan and Sudfeld may turn out ok. I'd stay away from Connor but having said that he'll probably be the one to develop best.

Again with the "reach" comment

How do you know the Cowboys would be "reaching" if they take Wentz/Goff/Lynch at 4?

...most years the top three would rank lower than they are projected.
I'm glad you agree there are many options to finding a franchise QB. Right now, the best option is to take one high in the draft while the opportunity is there. If he strikes out, look for another option.

Right now? That's exactly why its not the best option, because Right now is the wrong Year/Draft to take a QB in the top 20....much less Top 4.

Repeatedly listing Tom Brady and simply listing Peyton Manning and Drew Brees as "Free Agency" dilutes the validity of your point. Peyton and Drew were 1st picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds, respectively. The list reveals to me you need to draft high if you want a QB that can win a Super Bowl. Everyone knows Brady is a freak.

Again, the argument wasn't let's draft a QB in the 6th round this year.

The argument is that drafting a QB just to draft a QB in the first round doesn't make sense, and the results are more often than not a disaster.

I dont hear anybody [with a clue] saying draft a QB just to draft a QB.
Goff and and Wentz are gaining rating and have moved to the top of the board
because they bring a lots of success traits that have been measured and evaluated.

We waste all our picks after the 5th.

Might as well mine for some gold.

Might as well pick well thruout the draft. We don't need two developmental QBs on the roster. Romo, vet FA, draft pick/developmental QB is one more than usual for us. Why draft a QB and put him on the PS? Just take someone else's PS player who has developed.

The past is the best predictor of the future.

No one thinks that Goff or Wentz is a Luck caliber quarterback. The NFL is littered with overrated QBs who were drafted in the first round, simply because teams value the QB position. Happens consistently.

Blake Bortles
Johnny Manziel
Teddy Bridgewater
EJ Manuel
Robert Griffin
Ryan Tannehill
Brandon Weeden
Jake Locker
Blaine Gabbert
Christian Ponder
Sam Bradford
Tim Tebow
Matthew Stafford
Mark Sanchez
Josh Freeman
JaMarcus Russell
Brady Quinn
Vince Young
Matt Leinart
Jay Cutler
Alex Smith
Jason Campbell
JP Losman
Byron Leftwich
Kyle Boller
Rex Grossman

That's just the list since Romo came into the league...

Justin Gilbert
Kyle Fuller
Darqueze Dennard
Jason Varrett
Bradley Roby
Dee Miliner
DJ Hayden
Desmond Trufant
Xavier Rhodes
Morris Claiborne
Stephon Gilmore
Dre Kirkpatrick
Prince Amukamara
Jimmy Smith
Kareem Jackson
Kyle Wilson
Patrick Robinson
Vontae Davis (fwiw, found success with another team)
Leotis McKelvin
Mike Jenkins
Antone Cason
Aaron Ross
Ty Hill
Jason Allen
Kelly Jennings
Fabian Washington
Marlin Jackson
Ahmad Carol
Dunta Robinson
Chris Gamble
Andre Woolfork
Sammy Davis

Guess we shouldn't take a CB either, so let's scratch Ramsey off our list as well.

I'm glad you think this is apples to apples, but a rookie defensive end or cornerback would pretty much start immediately and at least have the opportunity to help the team, whereas a rookie QB is riding the pine pony until Romo is done.

Galian Beast you are wasting your breath. They aren't missing your point, they are ignoring it because it doesn't fit what they want to happen. The same people who are saying we MUST draft a QB this year, because, (GASP) we will never have a chance to ever draft one this high again will be the same people *****ing because we "reached" to draft a QB if he is turns out to be a bust.

Realistically, the team is going to do what it thinks is best. If they don't see one of these potential draftees being a franchise QB, then there is no need to force the pick and piss off the 4th overall pick, or any other pick for that matter. If they take a QB because they think the grade is there, I'm down with that too. But this nonsense of forcing the pick is what desperate franchises do. Ask Cleveland how that is working out for them.

So many posters are complete simpletons who ignore what you are trying to say and argue just for the sake of arguing.

This is just nonsense. The same talent evaluators that rate players year in and year out have both Goff and Wentz as top 10 talent. So where's this reach you keep talking about? Or are we to go by your evaluations of the QBs?

I personally think Goff and Wentz will end up as better QBs than Winston and Mariotta.

A top 10 pick in one draft isn't necessarily the same quality as in another. If you compare the 2009 draft with the 2011 draft, you should be able to see my point. I don't think this will prove to be an outstanding top 10 draft this year. Time will tell.

That is an interesting hypothesis. I think Mariotta and Winston both had higher grades and more perceived upside when they were drafted than Wentz or Goff do currently.

Reaching got us Ekuban and Greg Ellis instead of Randy Moss, in large part because of perceived need. I really don't think that is the way to go personally.

As a side note, if you can get a player lower in the draft by trading back, that is awesome. But I would rather the Cowboys take a guy that they like that every other team views as a reach (think FredBeard) than to try to get cute and draft a guy too low and miss out on him.

By way of example, if the Cowboys think Zeke is the very best player in this draft, then it is better to take him at #4 than to trade back to 10 or 15 thinking that they can get him and he is gone at that pick. I'm not saying I want Zeke, I am just saying that it is better to take a player that really doesn't fit value wise who can actually play at a high level than it is to take a high dollar position player that can't actually play. Wasting a pick is NEVER COST EFFECTIVE.
