Would surprise me if either would play more than special teams. Scandrick, Carroll and Brown are our top three and Awusie would be next in.

Why do we love to torture ourselves with corners like Carroll every year.

Our coaching staff can be so frustrating some times

Who else was out there? We needed to make changes at corner - everybody's been complaining, so the staff decided to clean house (and open up the cap).

I completely agree that the mental hurdle is the taller one at this point. But the only way he clears that hurdle is by being on the field and actually competing. I think that once the whistle blows and he lays a hit on someone (and someone lays one on him), he'll be fine in that regard. I just want to see him get through game one physically healthy with a few stats to reward his hard work and persistence. I think he's going to be a greater contributor this year than many seem to be thinking.

Oh, I'm not even talking about him worrying about his knee, I'm talking about understanding and processing what he's seeing. He's still essentially a rookie in terms of playing. I'd expect the Giants offensive coaches to run plays to specifically try to fool him.

I should've worded it differently. I don't mean they are rushing him, I mean he must be ready because there is no need to rush him so they wouldn't.
We've been hearing a lot bout the team "sticking with the plan" to bring him back, which lead me to believe that he would be on a limited pitch count for a while. We may find that them naming him as a "starter" is nothing more than a reward for his hard work and that he will be somewhat limited in his number of plays. Sunday night will tell the tale, to some extent.

They could plan to keep him inactive for a few weeks in case of injuries. Probably not a bad depth piece to have waiting in the wings.

Could be, especially if they don't need the spot.

After all, they'll need to open up two in the next month.

I expect he'll be one of the guys gone at that point.

Name anyone not named Carroll. He stinks.

I mean yeah, we all wanted to see some changes in the secondary. What I didn't expect was we'd run out and sign a CB who likely could be as bad or worse than Carr, for example.

I'd have looked at guys like McCourty before Carroll.

Same here.

I think Carroll - like Kellen Moore - will have to repeatedly stink on the field during games that count - before the team would grudgingly pull him and play someone else.

I'll wait until he plays a down or two before I bury the guy.

Sweet! Lewis is rusty as hell and gets to face the giant juggernaut receivers! Trial by fire!

Ballers gon' ball! He will pick off Eli! Book it
He still won't see the field unless there's an injury. There are at least 4 CB's ahead of him.

He's not a rookie. There's plenty of tape on him out there.

As a fan, sure, I hope he plays well and is what the team believes rather than what I have seen.

But it seems like there are several situations like that.

Chaz Green - Cooper
Kellen Moore at all
And Nolan Carroll

I'm expected to believe without seeing and I don't have that kind of faith when it comes to this team.

Awesome. Jaylon must really be ready because they don't have to rush him.

How do you figure that? They are starting him because they have no choice. Our starter got hurt. Now that doesnt mean they wouldnt start Smith. But I have a suspicion they would have liked to ease him in more and limit his snaps. We may never know. But we will find out soon enough if he is ready. From watching him in preseason, I would be surprised if he was 100%.

Again - at what price?

I was thinking about his confidence in his physical ability, but you're absolutely correct in regards to his confidence in trusting what he sees on the field. I think that's an angle a lot of us haven't given much thought to, but it's really the most important hurdle at this point. There is no substitute for being on the field in an actual game that means something, but I hope he's a little ahead of a normal rookie in that he's had over a year to study the system, watch film, etc.

McCourty signed in Cleveland for less than what we are paying Carroll. Crap, I'd have brought Claiborne back before Carroll, even with his injury history. His upside blows Carroll's away and he also was cheaper than Carroll.

Not sure if Newman would have shaken free from Minnesota (not sure when he resigned), but I'd have taken him on a two year deal over Carroll too.

for defensive players especially adjusting to the speed of the NFL is one of the hardest things to do. You only get that by playing.

now Jaylon does have the advantage of knowing the D and the D calls and all that; but putting that together with actual experience is going to take time.
