so its pretty much bring back the same as last year and hope they get better

That seems to be the plan unfortunately...............march basically the same guys out there and hope for the best.

And also start praying we don't have to play Rogers in the playoffs...............he totally owns Dallas

What are we looking for? What do we want this guy to do for us? What measureable accomplishments do we expect?

I know the pass rush is a problem, but is it a problem with talent level, specific skill set, coaching philosophy, defensive style, or some other aspect?

Overall, this defense was ranked #5 in limiting points. Yes, they did get scored on in the playoffs by one of the more prolific offenses led by an obvious future Hall of Famer and a direct issue in the loss was the lack of a pass rush.

Looking at the sack stats over the past three seasons there has been only 13 DE's that averaged 8 sacks per season or 1 sack in every two games. 7 of them were first round draft picks, 3 of them a top 5 pick overall.

The draft and free agency strategy of the Cowboys over the past several seasons seems to be one in which they don't actively seek any perceived immediate need. They draft the best talent they can get regardless of position and, eventually, that need is filled.

I think they also understand two things if they were to "go out and get" a guy:

1. He will be overpriced.

2. They are always one play away from being right back where they were before they signed him to that overpriced contract.

Their strategy is to incrementally add talent to a squad and obtain elevated results through superior scouting, competition, training, and the player's character as previously described by Jason Garrett.

However, it's in this scenario where you can get some very pleasant surprises. Example? Expectations for Dak prior to the season was somewhat lower than if the Cowboys had somehow moved back up into the 1st round.

Suppose the Cowboys sign a top guy in free agency to a fortune only to draft the next Charles Haley in the 4th round of the next draft? Even suppose that we were never able to really discover his talent level because he didn't get enough exposure as the result of backing up the big contract free agent.

I don't want any outside guy either at this point. Just resign our guys and keep drafting we'll. Tony Jefferson (who I keep reading on here) isn't much different than Wilcox or Church.

I've tried to caution people talking about "just grab the 3 best FAs and it won't damage our cap" crowd. Most often the players you want don't make it to free agency and the ones who do have warts and cost more than they're worth. Free agency is rarely the answer.

It's why there were some of us apoplectic that not only did we go rb at 4 last year... Because running back... But also because it meant we were foregoing a defensive player.... an equally as big of a sin.

Trade for Sheldon Richardson and draft Harris, Taco, Lawson, or Takk. D-line problem solved

I hear what you are saying, paying a fortune for a guy in free agency when he might not be worth it or would be a progress stopper might be a bad move.

However the alternate scenario must be considered as well.............what if our defensive line is just not good enough? What if that 4th round pick is not the next coming of Charles Haley and is just a JAG?

Then what? Get beat by Rogers in the playoffs again?

Wait...how is this possible. The Giants spend 200 million last year on defense, still have the money to franchise tag JPP and they are going after a free agent guard like Leary and a running back?

Magical
Because how much money do they have invested on offense?

And on an unrelated note how did their offense perform last year?

Trey Hendrickson, DE, Florida Atlantic
Height: 6-4. Weight: 270.
Projected 40 Time: 4.82.
Projected Round (2017): 3-5.

2/18/17: Hendrickson was one of the stars of the East-West Shrine with a strong week of practice. He did well in the pass-rushing one-on-ones and notched a lot of wins. On the season, Hendrickson had 51 tackles with 15 tackles for a loss, 9.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two passes batted. He recorded 13.5 sacks as a junior. Hendrickson could be a mid-round sleeper. Sources have said they graded him in the early rounds of Day 3, but sneaking into the second day is possible.
