Some guys lose more speed putting on pads and helmet and cleats then others do. A 4.4 guy could end up on the field being just as fast as the 4.6 guy. That is why game tape is so important- you see what they do while on the field. If a guy catches them or they run away from him that is what counts.

This is why the combine needs to be tweaked for players to be in full pads and some of the drills need to be changed altogether.

I think the full pads would be more useful on RBs. Some run faster in pads than they do without them on. A notable example was Terrell Davis.

For WRs, they should time them how fast they run while getting into their routes.

I would rather know how fast a player can get from point A to point B on a route then how fast he can get to point B running straight ahead.

That is a good idea. But I wouldn't ditch the 40 permanently. It's a good gauge for testing someone's down-field speed.

You could just time them on a 9 route...

That's what the Senior Bowl is for. Also it wouldn't be very reliable because different receivers would be facing different corners. There would be no standardization, so it wouldn't be able to show how each receiver would perform under the same circumstances.

40 times are probably the single most overrated stat when it comes to the draft. Look at the Raiders, DHB had what? 9 catches last season, Crabtree had about 50 and only played half a season. But... Crabtree wasn't fast enough for the Raiders

theres always exceptions, I could spend hours writing successful players in the nfl who ran sub 4.4 40's......:laugh2:
